  • This video marks the beginning of the 2021 engine swap series. The new engine is a 2.0l 8v crossflow engine from a mk4 Golf. The engine code is AWG but it is very similar to an ABA, which is more commonly known.

    Done like a pro!
    The little filter in the needle valve is not critical Memphis. Either clean and reuse it, or leave it out as you have.
    These little filters are no longer available from dellorto, and are only used in a few DHLA applications.
    You will have to grind and relieve the spot where the lever(s) are touching the intake manifold, to give clearance for the throttle.
    Wishing you the best with the radiator and distributor issues.
    If we can help at all, just ask.
    Great work and enjoyed watching all this, great video 👍
    Emmanuel

      Carbs have character. But they are outdate technology that was replaced by injectors for many reasons.
      I consider fuel injection much much more complicated to work with. For a carburetor you just need a few PSI of constant fuel pressure from your pump, a screwdriver and patience.
      Fuel Injection is another story. You don't just turn a screw to tune the mixture. You have to connect a computer to your ECU, have the right software for that and than figure out what the fuck is going on for 30 minutes bc something is not working before you eventually can start looking at the fuel trims.

    I’m totally bias because my first car was a mk1 Rabbit (swallow tail), (that I wish I kept). I stuffed a 2.0L Jetta motor in it, that was bored out to 2.2L, and blew it up with a turbo, way too big for it. Drove the snot out of that car every day, till I blew it up. Learned how to change both motor mounts and the transmission mount in under an hour, because I kept ripping them at autocross events every month. So my tuppence is for mk1 Golf content, but actually I enjoy all your videos, so just keep doing what feels good to you, and we’ll keep watching.
    Cheers mate.

  • @redplanetindustries5281
    @redplanetindustries5281 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey there. I work on Dellortos all the time. One thing I wanted to mention is that ultrasonic cleaning rarely cleans the tiny passages enough. You should get a set of carburetor cleaning wires (a set costs about USD $10) and poke through all the tiny passages. Especially under the jets and the inside the bores above the butterflies. You'd be amazed at what sticks inside. Apologies for telling you this after you've assembled them.

    • @1959Berre
      @1959Berre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Ultrasonic cleaning is overrated. You really need to clean the tiny passages manually. Besides, I am not a big fan of omitting filters that the manufacturer deems necessary.

    Been following you for a while and this is the most interesting content yet as I'm currently considering engine swapping my mk1 cabriolet with a 2,0l 8V myself. But since FI is original to my car I was thinking of doing it instead of carbs. The point of building an 8V for me is that it is more "stealthy" than the 16V-route. At least here in Sweden you'll not pass inspection with a 16V under the hood.
    It'll be really interesting to see how the fitment of the new power plant goes, also some mention of the crossflow cylinder head choice. Great content man!

    The Dellorto DHLA 40 "H" carbs are Alfa Romeo specific (like all lettered DHLAs) and are designed for a particular Alfa Romeo Engine. Even between Alfa engines they cannot be swapped because the internals of the carburettor were setup to match that particular Alfa Romeo cc engine so they not tune optimally unless matched to the right engine. You even have as seen the tamper proof mixture screws on this later "H" version. The Dellorto DHLA without any letter after the 40 are universal and the only carburettors that can be tuned for any car since they are not engine specific.

    An 8v 2.0L is not a boring option!
    They produce a better, flatter torque curve than the 16v.
    Had one in a MK1 jetta with a mild schrick cam and a twin choke Webber conversion.
    Certainly livened up the jetta. So an 8v running twin DHLA will certainly make the Golf move.
