  • Kev and Sam head to Wheel Creek Hut in the Maruia river catchment.
The trip involved an initial drive through private land before the tramp began along a four wheel drive track.
The track itself starts after crossing Wheel Creek and does not follow the route as shown on the topo map. Instead there is a route marked with orange triangles that can be followed. Although the route is marked all the way to the hut the track isn't formed in most places, so one needs to be carefull to make sure that they can see the next marker as they progress towards the hut.
Wheel Creek Hut itself is in fantastic condition and has 6 bunks, but only gets visitied by 3 to 8 parties per year.
More information including contat details for the land owner can be found at www.remotehuts...

Solid mission guys. Looks like some track work would make the journey much easier. Sam under the log "good times" sounded a bit type 2 fun 😂

Type 2 fun, haha. With a bit of track work, it would be an awesome tramp.

Thank you for the video guys I really enjoy seeing these less travelled routes .
What size and brand (if its ok to say) packs are you carrying?
I dug out my old pack the other day. A K2 pack I bought in 1974. It was state of the art then and art has changed. Just looking at it makes my back and shoulders ache.

Thanks, Francis. We both have packs from Kathmandu. Probably wouldn't go there next time as they are not that comfortable either. However, they are built very well and seem to be indestructible.

Not many Dave. Over about the last 10 years, between 3 to 8 parties each year.

In the dark!!! It was hard enough for us to find our way in daylight. In the dark is very impressive.

Thanks, Stuart. The tramp ticked all the right boxes - hard without being exhausting - a little bit of mystery because so few people get there and some great NZ bush.
