- Torque Converter, Variator, Continuous Variable Transmission, CVT, Variable Speed Drive. Clean and lube. This is installed on a Ridley Motorcycle Speedster with a rear #50 chain drive. Each drive pully ramp is 15 degrees taper with a total of 30 degrees. The drive pully bore is 1 inch and has 9 pucks at 56.1 grams each, totaling 504.9 grams. No garter spring for the pucks is used. The driven pully has a 3/4-inch bore and uses the Comet red spring, 7 1/2-inch diameter pully. Ratio is 2.43 to 1 low and 1 to 1 high. Belt symmetrical it's top is 7/8 inch wide.
Your driven pulley is on backwards, if the cvt "shifts" the belt gets out of alignment which generates lots of heat and destroys it. Only asymetric belt cvt's can be mounted like this. The ramp is also mounted in the wrong direction. How long do your belts last?
Thanks for your comment. Everything is assembled like the motorcycle manufacture did it. These are very small (the height of your kneecap) made from 1996 to 2002 and there is only 200. The cvt is rated to 18 hp. This one has about 29 hp. Depending on how a person drives determines how long the belt lasts. I know of a few that still have the original factory belt.
@@KT111Thanks for the info. If the manufacturer did the setup like this its probably not that bad, if it works it works I guess. But the driven sides ramps are mounted wrong either way, I suggest looking that up because the cvt may not work that well if its done like this. Cheers
@ Yes, it does seem like it is mounted on the wrong side of the ramps. Comet made these so they could be run in either direction and both sides of the ramps are the same . The difference is the spring. The red spring 203130A is for the normal direction as you say. There is also a reverse wound spring that is yellow 204524A so the drive can be used as it is installed on these motorcycles. When Ridley was testing these, it was found the red spring worked better than the yellow spring. I have both types of springs and found that to be true. The type 2 with the bronze bushing and steel collar keeps the belt cooler when idling by removing the friction from the sides of the belt and was modified by Ridley. Thanks for bring this up. There are no manuals on these bikes. My intent is to give people videos of how these were built. Thanks again, I enjoy conversions like this.
I have never seen the 44c driver ran without the garter spring before, whats engagement rpm? any problems with the pucks stickin and keepin the driver engaged? thanks and great straight forward vid.
Thanks for watching my video. It is my understanding the garter spring was causing problems when Ridley was testing different setups. I am not sure what rpm it engages. Haven't had any problems with the pucks sticking and not disengaging. Have tried several types of lubricants and found the Comet GP-730A works the best for me.
How many thousand kilometers have you driven on the magnum 44 clutch, have you had to change the plates and weights?
Have 27,358 kilometers on the front 44C clutch with same weights. Same kilometers on the 44D driven rear and just replaced it due to the keyway expanding. Same part as you fixed with the steel on your motorcycle.
@@KT111 Is it possible to drive 3000 km without disassembling or lubricating?
@@dimalopatin563 Not sure. I clean and lube about 1000 km. It only takes me 20-30 minutes.
@@KT111 understandt ,thanks
@@dimalopatin563 I have thought about what is most problematic for me. It is the belt getting very hot. The top wide part of the v-belt will roll up on the edges and become lower in the pulleys the high speed will be less. Speed will drop from 148 km per hour to 80 km per hour, sometimes less speed.
I have disiel moto ant this moment my moto to comet 40 cluth , I wount change and put on magnum 44 . why don't you put a spring ring that goes around the weights
When these little motorcycles were built, they found the garter spring ring could pop out of the grooves on the weights during rapid acceleration, deceleration and cause damage to the inside of the drive housing making it unusable.
@@KT111 Thank you for your very interesting and accurate answer! Tell me how the 44 magnum works without a ring spring? He doesn't want to drive, how do you start the engine? when does rpm engagement start? Look at my motorcycle, I have 3 diesel motorcycles. I'm glad you wrote!
@@dimalopatin563 Hi Dima, centrifugal force on the pucks will let them slide out when the engine slows RPM. The Comet dry film lubricant GP-730, part number 204097A works the best. The engine is idled slow so it will not grab the drive belt when starting and idling. I don't know the RPM it engages. I only adjust by listening to it. Мне нравятся ваши мотоциклы. Спасибо, что вы здесь.
@@KT111 How can you put a magnum 44 without a central spring on the weights, will it work for a long time, 10-15 thousand kilometers? Do you have Facebook?
