The thing about Darkthrone never having had problems with law enforcement isn't entirely true... they were in fact arrested once. For participating in an anti-apartheid protest. Which I guess is cool enough given the genre's general political leanings.
Darkness/Death/Decay/Destruction r the REAL precursors of Black Metal, not human beings on their own because nature: animals/weather etc.. have darkness within them. Satan, the idea of Satan & "Evil". those r the things these ppl r inspired by to "create".
I've seen numerous BM docs, this is the first time I have heard Euronymous cooked and ate Dead's brain, I'll take this with a pinch of salt, Varg also never got convicted on burning the churches, he said all but one ( Stavanger ) church was done by the same person. Not a bad condensed BM history doc though.
Great documentary, but Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids EP 1983 was truly the Celtic Frost Indie Label Debut, but technically Morbid Tales EP in Europe, LP in the US 1984 was the Official Celtic Frost Noise Records Europe , distributed through Metal Blade Records Stateside 1985 . To Megatherion could be viewed as either their second , or third Official Release depending upon whether you choose to view Hellhammer as the same band , or regard them as a separate entity altogether . I Personally don't think that it's absurd to find many similarities in musical direction from Apocalyptic Raids to Morbid Tales. I do however believe the name change would have been more fitting for the Into the Pandemonium album's release . At least to me from that album forward their stylistically a different band entirely . They did however return to their Black Metal? , Death Metal ? , Thrash Metal ? , Funeral Doom ? Roots upon their reunion. I believe that Celtic Frost depending upon the individual song could be labeled with a variety of Extreme Metal subgenres. They were incredibly inventive for musicians gifted with such limited technical skills
if black metal was a school class he will be that guy you watch the night before the exam and learn from him what you need to know and didn't understand until you watched him 🤣
Morbid Tales came out before TMT. I think Emperors Return ep as well. At least I saw them on the shelves back in the day. CF doesn’t get the attention. In the mid 80’s CF, Venom, a bit later Bathory, were the albums that scared a 13 year old me back in 84.
Why no mentions of Satyricon or Gorgoroth atleast by somewhere between 2nd wave & 3rd wave Black Metal ? This would of been so much more of a complete history with them.
Pretty great. Saw Metallica for Ride and bought Sab St in '70. That said, my Cort Arrow is overdue for a run thru Mercyful Fates "Melissa" (Denner, a '67 style Cort).

Mercyful Hate first wave? Venom first wave? Hellhammer first wave all those three are not Black Metal. Bathory is the only one first wave of Black Metal. Go back to school.

Apartheid was generally against anything black so I get why they thought themselves involved
Dude great job. This vid is basically story of bm from roots to new wave
It’s good that you talk about Celtic Frost/Hellhammer ...Real precursors of Black Metal
Though there were also many other BM precursors that predate those two.
@River Cheney-Holub Parabellum is one of those precursors I really like

You missed Sodom. Early Sodom is the best example of first wave next to Hellhammer and Bathory

Glad you mentioned Mercyful Fate as a 1st Wave Black Metal band.
Mercyful Fate is Heavy Metal, this band has nothing to do with Black Metal, only corpsepaint Hahahahaha.

I was in a group to find new BM bands and left because they were all just bands dwelling onto the second wave.
