  • When changing my rear tire I noticed that the bearings of the rear sprocket carrier were worn out. It was time for a necessary bearing re-fitment.

Thanks buddy , I was going crazy wondering what the sound was coming from the rear wheel

I was able to get a fingernail under the bushings to lift them from the bearings just enough to get a pry tool between it and the bearing. Is it better to pry them out from outside, or hammer them out from the inside? Thanks!

I'd say pry them out. With a hammer you could damage things, including your thumb 😉

@@michelp1398 at 1:30 you said to use a hammer to slam them out gently, but didn't go into detail. Can you elaborate on how you got them out?

@@998RC i'm not sure how I did it exactly back then. In any case if you use a hammer, do not use excessive force. Gentle taps only

Hello Michael, which year is this KTM 990 SM? I don't have that spacer between bearings, and I also don't find this in the documentation. It is part of the Sprocket support itself?

Hello George, this was a 2012 SMT if I remember well. The spacer is indeed an integral part of the sprocket support. If you have not got one perhaps it was never there before or the previous owner forgot to put it back in after doing a bearing overhaul.

@@michelp1398 I'm currently doing this on my 2012 SMT and there is no spacer between the bearings. Part does not show up on the parts diagram but is on the RC8 diagram. Both models share the same sprocket carrier so that's weird. Do you think I should buy one or not? Also, I had a hard time removing the spacers bushings without damaging them, not sure how you removed them so cleanly.

@@WoZIMoo if I were you I would get the spacer. It ensures that the bearings cannot move towards ECG l each other when tightening the axle nut while it also guides the rear axle next to the bushes on the outside.

I also have no spacer on my 2010 SMT. Looking inside, I can see the "bottoms" of the 2 bushings touching each other, so not even space for a spacer. Looking at the 2012 parts diagram, they have completely different part numbers for those 2 bushings, and the left and right bushings are the same part numbers whereas on my 2010 they are 2 different part number.
