I've met Rickey several times, when he was with Blackfoot, when he joined Lynyrd Skynyrd, He is one of the coolest people I've met in Rock-n-Roll, and I've met many. Here's to ya Rick.... God bless.
The most overused comment on TH-cam. You see everyone say it on any video about their favorite musician or band. I've seen it at least in the last 5 vids I've watched.
The 2 songs Ricky wrote with Skynyrd that I know of "White Dove" and "The Seasons" were simply beautiful. His singing was so beautiful as well. I fell in love with him when "Strikes" came out." Highway Song" was top notch!! The whole album was fantastic.
He loves being in the spotlight!! He's worked hard to get where he's wanted to be. He gave away the things he loved and one of them was me! I had a good time and met some great friends. It was a blast, but he didn't have to hurt me or the ones who gave and gave to help him become a 'star.' Rick, remember that song by John Miles on the album, 'Rebel, ' called 'Music.' MUSIC was my first love and it will be my last. Music of the future and music of the past....
I've been a Ricky Medlocke fan since Strikes came out in around '79... I was 12 and didn't know jack about music, but I knew that album was somehow kind of transcendent... It is to this day one of my favorite records... I have always had a copy nearby, no matter what my situation was... my bands still do about half the songs on it... As a single work of any artist I've ever listened to, that album has influenced me as a musician more than just about any other... I've met alot of big players over the years, but I never met him... I'd like to shake his hand and thank him for all the fun I've had playin rock n roll, because without that record, I probably would have given up and bought a suit and tie... (still don't own any, but I have a pretty nice pile of gear....)
He has a gorgeous smile. I love his personality. He's so real, not a fake show business stuck up like some of the celebrities. He's down to Earth and it shows. Love this fabulous guitarist! One of the world's best musicians ever!
I Worked at Rock 104.5 radio station 78-80 in Jacksonville FL and loved every minute of it.Blackfoot is the best of the best. thanks to Rickey and the boys!!!!
that's cool ,I did a commercial for KOME for the city of Milpitas CA in1980 for our high school we were in the schools Rock n Roll club with my step sister and her friends it is cool memories thanks for sharing your story btw have a good day
btw as a country fried Rock fan from California I loved those bands great Rock music came from the south in the late 70s and 80s as I started to play guitar and still do with my les paul I've wanted since I was a kid in high school so Rock On
@@Rebel-Rouser great choice, Marauder is my favorite because of the songs "fire of the dragon" and "too hard to handle" but Tomcattin' is a close second for me

Very 😎! Thanks to the Medlocke’s, I was a huge Blackfoot fan in the late 70’s, early 80’s, after discharge from the Navy in ‘78. Kick ass, take no prisoner Southern Rock..🥳✌️👨🏻
I hung out and talked guitars with Rickey on 2 occasions! I will never forget how nice and down to earth he was! A cool guy, heck of a singer, guitarist and performer!
I had an unforgettable time recording Strikes with Rickey in Ann Arbor oh so long ago underneath Al Nalli’s music store. He is a sweetheart of a man and the real deal.
I graduated high school in 1981 and the One cassette that was locked in my car stereo was Blackfoot Strikes. Love Blackfoot! Way talented. Best days of my life. I was turned onto Blackfoot by my friend Frank Deluca and Rusty Vernay at Boonton High School New Jersey. Thank you Frank and Rusty!
@Lebo leigh Leigh Have you ever seen Blackfoot live,They definitely blew Ted Nugent away and they held their own with Rush, I assume you were at both of these shows.I'll wait.
I seen Rickey Medlocke with BLACKFOOT in Abilene TX 1982... Awesome...! I will never forget that show... Guitarist Charlie Hargrett fell on stage while playing and broke the headstock clean off of his Black Les paul... we were leaning on the rail and my friend got the string nut of off Charlie's guitar...
Music is magic! Especially if you got to see and witness it in the 60s and 70s. I knew Ronnie, but never met Ricky, so it's cool to learn some things about him and his past. Ricky IS an original from Skynyds past. He IS an original member as we see from the Muscle Shoals tapes. He just went another direction right before Skynyrds first album came out. Which wasnt all that bad for him, for those who know "southern rock", who hasn't heard of Blackfoot? Thank you for sharing Mr. Medlocke!
Saw Blackfoot in concert in 78 or 79 but had not heard of them at the time. Highway Song and Wishing Well are as good as any Skynard song, and they had numerous good ones as we know. They are in the top 100 best rock songs ever imo. If on a desert island and could only have a handful of songs, those two, Purples' Highway Star, a few from Zep, and some Badfinger would be at the top of the list. And can't forget Terry Kath with a couple from Chicago. Oh yeah, give some House Party with J Geils with a little Badlands by the Boss.
I'm a huge fan of Rickey and have been since the late 70's. I loved Blackfoot and always wondered why they weren't a bigger commercial success. I am glad to see he is getting paid and has a good life. My goodness, he has earned it.
My Dad was the original bass player (Lenny Stadler) for Blackfoot before Greg. Rickey you and John and were like brothers to him. If Rickey (or anyone that knows him) tell him Lenny's son would love to speak to him.
Ricky Medlocke grew up on the west side of Jax along with RVZ and the others and they were all friends as kids . RVZ wrote the song Curtis Lowe about Ricky's grandfather Shorty Medlocke. If people do their history they will see he was in one of the original line ups pre-release of the first album and decided to go his own way with Blackfoot who were bigger in the UK that his home country and he was a great front man singer and guitar player. For the latter generations of Skynyrd fans he is one along with Johhny Van Zant and Gary who has kept the name and music of lynyrd skynyrd going and the number of shows they do per year and the crowds they get show what a success that is . One of the best showmen I have ever seen and believe me I am not easily impressed lol
Andrew Sutton GOD BLESS YOU ANDREW SUTTON for saying it like it IS brother... The original album was called LYNYRD SKYNYRD.... THE FIRST....and THE LAST and I have a signed copy of the Vinyl Album and I LOVE IT.... God Is Great
I was working as a union stagehand in theatre in Wheeling WV. I was actually the steward at a very young age. Blackfoot was the headliner for the show. After we were all set up and dropped down the crew that would there for the rest of the day it was sound check time and we were all into music. We sat in the front row and watched the sound check and Rickey was in a good mood and gave us a helluva private concert. He came down off of the stage and was walking on the orchestra pit rail right in front of us. It was a hoot and I'll never forget that day. they played much longer than they needed for the sound check. this was like 79 or maybe 80. Nobody does that today. they will throw you out and God forbid if you take a picture. lol thanks Rickey. RIP Jackson Spires. what a drummer.
I loved this music my whole life. Now, listening to the interviews it comes full circle. I learn the hows, and the whys of how it all came about. Thank you for the great interview.
Seen Blackfoot with Rickey at a outdoor venue and it started to rain pretty good and they turned off the equipment and Rickey was still out in the rain still jamming out , he refused to leave the stage that was in 80 81 been to a lot of shows since then but that's one scene I hope I'll never forget
Rickey Medlock is one of the best southern rock guitarists ever, he has paid his dues time and time again, with Blackfoot and Skynyrd, so why cant you show Rickey some respect. What a musician!!!!!. Love you for ever. Rock on !!.
Such a cool, humble guy. To anyone who hasn't seen the live version of Train, Train featuring the original line-up here on TH-cam, do yourself a favor and watch it right now. It absolutely crushes.
I have seen this band 8 times, last time was right after the Mad Hatter passed away. I loved both bands alot. But Skynyrd has just always touched my heart. I was fortunate I did get to see Ronnie 3 times. I still have my concert ticket stubs. Rock on Always. Just 2 weeks ago bought 2 more cds to add to my collection. And also purchased the movie of the plane wreck. But there is a documentary I have looked every where for, sadly cant find it. Maybe one day I will. But thank you to this amazing band who has gave us all great music, beautiful memories, and a lasting kinship. Love all the songs but my favorite is Tuesdays Gone With The Wind and The Battle of Curtis Lowe...Adore these guys...Please never retire it would be another sad day in history for Lynyrd Skynyrd.. Ronnie and the others who passed that day would so proud how you kept it together all these years!!!
What a great interview... Got a signed copy of "Marauder" I've had for 30 years more or less.... and I never knew he was involved with LS..... I learned something tonight!! Such an eloquent guy too...
Stratocastermark I got to see them on the Medicine Man tour. One of the best shows I've seen. Also cool, humble guys too. Great experience. Train Train is one of my top concert moments of all time!
An answer to those who believe that Rickey is underestimated. I have been a massive fan of Rickey and Blackfoot a lifetime and I own all their vinyls. This strange thing is that I am from Greece, which is a million miles away from the American south and I can reassure you that Blackfoot were adored in Europe during the 70s and 80s. No way is Rickey underestimated, when he has fans around the globe who still follow him! (I have seen him live only once with Skynyrd and I was happy as a small child).
brother, ty so much for talking about this, my heart was broken for many years after the plane crash, and many others too, in fact, we covered a lot of Ronnie's songs well into the2000's. it's just comforting, in a weird sort of way, to know that some of the greatest, and you are one of them, are still here.God bless you man, rock on!
I saw Blackfoot at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in the mid 80’s, what a kickass show, the drummer blew my mind and Ricky is a God given talent showman
I’m 58 and can relate, I was watching him in some Lynyrd Skynyrd shows and he is the only person I singled out as someone I’d love to set down and talk too having spent a good chunk of my life as a vocalist. He’s awesome.
I love watching this man do his thing! I LOVE how he engages with the audience every time I see them :) He really seems to love what he does and you can't beat that
Saw Skynyrd live at the old Capital Center outside DC around 1976, then never again until July 2018 out in suburban Virginia. They were great, and Rickey plays terrifically well and has great stage presence. Enjoyed it so much I saw them again in Baltimore two months ago. Another terrific show. In both 2018 shows, I sat in the first few rows, with people who'd paid extra to attend the meet and greet. All who met Rickey described him as down-to-earth and a genuinely friendly guy. (Unlike some of the losers on this comment board.) Rock on, Rickey and LS! Coming to see you again in 2019 !
Thank you! God Bless You Rickey Medlocke. Great and very Informative! Glad I watched and listened to what you had to say! I don't quite understand why there would be any hate here!
He's without a doubt one of the greatest Rock historians especially Southern Boog as my Alabama born groups I formulated from mid 70s called it. Hats off to you Sir.
I met him at the airport in RI a year or so ago after they played at Foxwoods Casino. He and Gary Rossington were waiting to board a flight to Florida. I just HAD to say 'Yo!'. He was a nice guy. Loved meeting a fan of Blackfoot from years back. Gary Rossington is very shy. He was kind of hiding behind Rick. Funny.
Matthew Bradley Man I'm looking forward to getting to meet him one day Matthew, it would be a great day for me for sure! Yeah it's interesting how some celebs are really alive on stage yet in person they are a little with drawn.
Yeah...funny you should mention it being a "great day". When I was boarding the flight, Rick was sitting in the front row on my left. Passengers were stopped in the aisle loading up the overhead compartments so I had to stand a minute or two next to Rick. I looked down and smiled. He looked up and smiled. I said to him..."Yep...a great day to be me." he laughed and said, "Have a great flight."
Matthew Bradley Yep I'm gonna have to get to their show when they come through Vegas again this summer, I know lots of Folks who can probably get me back stage - so I too can have my great day! :-)
Rickey is the consummate professional. Blackfoot was a kick ass band, and his being back in Skynyrd all this time definitely legitimized their essence. Wonderful interview with a down to earth , professional musician who knows how to make some kick ass rock and roll. Glad you didn't retire Rickey, you're a Southern Rock and Roll Treasure!!
Great interview. One of the best on this subject by one of the best. LS going to be up in my neck of the woods in a couple days. Don't have the money to see em, but I think I'll take my 2.5 yr. old Grandson over to the fair grounds and let him jump around outside listening to one of his favorite bands. He's been hearing them since he was born. First song he probably heard was Grandpa playing him Simple Man on my acoustic. I made sure he heard the best the minute he was born. He now holds his mini Marshall and dances to Grandpa putting some Needle n Spoon down for him hahaha. He loves their songs and says, turn it up a bit louder Grandpa hahaha. Love it!
LGZEE that's so sweet dude, let the rest talk crazy shit! LOL.😆 so nice just to hear about the music and not through in some stories they research which tells his story over and over again...Ty my friend 😍😘🙌❤💙💛💚💖✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌PEACE..
Rickey Medlocke you did it man. I hope you do the same for 1000s of others. You playing in Chicago was spectacular. So Mote it be and thanks from the Shriners to all you guys!
Wow, my perception of rock-n-roll and it's evolution as a now 58 yr old...just got validated by Ricky in this interview...for me. I kinda like that. Very cool. Enjoyed this upload very much. As a Jacksonville Florida resident of 58 years I listened to all those bands he spoke of. My first rock-n-roll album ( Grand Funk: Flight of the Phoenix) was bought for me by my mother in 1974 (5th grade)...been a rocker ever since. 4 albums that influenced my taste for music the most. Grand Funk: Flight of the Phoenix, Deep Purple: Machine Head, Lynyrd Skynyrd: Pronounced, and Van Halen: 1.
Rickey you're an Icon Bud love you picking them strings and solos I've loved All the Bands you were in Blackfoot was the good old days then Skynyrd whose music will never die. There music will live on after we're gone. You got a good gal with Stacy with her being with Kid I'm surprised Kid don't get you as a guitar player. Peace out to you Rickey keep them strings Smokin.
As a guitar player, Medlocke was a huge influence, as well as, Gary and Alan... He is spot on about the 70's, Van Halen, and the whole L.A. fabricated formula music scene..!
I saw Scorpions and ACDC opening for Ted in 79 . Nobody knew who the opening bands were going in but they sure did going out. Scorpions singer spoke with an accent nobody could understand . And then ACDC singer came out and spoke with a different accent nobody could understand !
That period of the early 70's that produced the great southern rock bands, I.E., Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band, which lead to mid-to late 70's southern rock bands like Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, .38 Special, etc.....coupled with the California rock of the early to mid-70's, I.E., The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band, Creedence Clearwater Revivial, Jackson Browne, etc......., that was an incredible period for rock, IMO.
One if my all time favorites. He was the shit in the Bkackfoot days, and still kills it. His voice and guitar skills are incredible
👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
One of the greatest performers & guitarists ever. Thank you Rickey for all of your great years. Good luck.

I used to work at that auditorium. I got to see Sammy Hagar and John Fogerty thanks to that job.
Love Ricky Medlocke! Love Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot.
Keep on rocking ricky, one of the best ever!!
Interesting fella to listen to - phenomenal guitarist
Always loved this guy.
You are definitely loved Ricky in what ever you do brother thanks for your part in LS and Blackfoot was awesome.
I’m 58 and can relate, I was watching him in some Lynyrd Skynyrd shows and he is the only person I singled out as someone I’d love to set down and talk too having spent a good chunk of my life as a vocalist. He’s awesome.
He's a superb musician ------
Thank You Rick and the Guys for help making growing up in the 70s more exciting than ever Could have been, Thanks Again Rick! Guy T.
I miss him being with Blackfoot. Love their music.
I have been a fan of Blackfoot since 1970 ! I was just a kid but he always recognized me in the audience! What a nice guy !!!!!
I saw Blackfoot at knebworth way back in 1985 and they were brilliant.
Blackfoot rocked, seriously, they ROCKED!!
Ricky has been leading a blessed life (with tragedies). Long may you rock, Ricky and I wish you excellent health!
He was a fascinating interview in this one.
thanks for all the kick ass years i love all the early blackfoot pree 85 an stilll skynyrd fan
Love Rickey Medlocke !! Such a great musician and class act !!
I love watching this man do his thing! I LOVE how he engages with the audience every time I see them :) He really seems to love what he does and you can't beat that
I really appreciate your love and support dear and i hope you always keep up the lovely support dear
I always thought Lynyrd Skynyrd should throw in a couple Blackfoot songs I mean they got the man right there
Highway Song and Train, two of the all time greatest southern rock songs ever.......
(Unlike some of the losers on this comment board.)
Rock on, Rickey and LS! Coming to see you again in 2019 !
he was blackfoot nuff said....and he brought new blood in skynyrd awesome musician one of my alltime musical heroes
Thank you! God Bless You Rickey Medlocke. Great and very Informative! Glad I watched and listened to what you had to say!
I don't quite understand why there would be any hate here!
Man, I could listen to this guy for hours and hours... Love you, Rickey! 🤘🏻
He's without a doubt one of the greatest Rock historians especially Southern Boog as my Alabama born groups I formulated from mid 70s called it. Hats off to you Sir.
Kickass cool veteran of southern rock. Great talent and love his Blackfoot days. Love ya Rickey!
Man that was an awesome interview from one of heros, Mr. Rickey Medlocke!
Thanks for all the awesome music!
Funny.
Matthew Bradley
Man I'm looking forward to getting to meet him one day Matthew, it would be a great day for me for sure!
*****
Man that shows a really strong character, which comes out in their music and I think that's why the fans love them so much!
This is great because I’m on a Blackfoot kick right now..... miss music like this. Good honest rock n roll
Ricky sure is a very cool dude I like him a lot his handsome as well keep rockin Ricky sexy man 🙏💖😇👏😜😝😛😍😘
Rickey Medlocke you did it man. I hope you do the same for 1000s of others. You playing in Chicago was spectacular.
So Mote it be and thanks from the Shriners to all you guys!
gracious human being
Rickey Medlocke is a great player, performer, and person.
Rickey, please don't forget Huey Thomasson and The Outlaws. Thank you for mentioning Molly Hatchet.
Green Grass and High Tides Forever
Atlanta Rhythm Section. .. Marshall Tucker Band. .. C.D.B.... ALLMANS. Man they don't make em like that anymore. Great music, great memories. ...
Also Billy Jones of The Outlaws.
Huey was awesome..That band was mind blowing..saw them many times..Miss those days sooooo bad.
OUTLAWS!!! Another KICK-ASS BAND!!!
Ricky Medlock was one of my favorites growing up in the 70s. Im 51 now and i still think Blackfoot rocks as well as LS.
I agree
Great guitar player and seems like a good guy.
Ricky & Artimus are as original as I care to get ... they're great musicians so there
I read a Guitar Player interview that told the same story up to the 80's. Great to hear him it. So happy to know he's still rockin'!
He's also on Lynyard Skynyrd's First and Last album. He even sings a song on the album "White Dove".
One of my favs. I think he wrote it. Liner notes on The Muscle Shoals tapes credit him for it.
This is some interesting stuff here. Rock on Rickey!
I've always enjoyed your playing and singing since Blackfoot. I was glad when you started playing with Skynyrd!
As a guitar player, Medlocke was a huge influence, as well as, Gary and Alan... He is spot on about the 70's, Van Halen, and the whole L.A. fabricated formula music scene..!
Great story. Loved it. Great music from both bands .
My favorite Blackfoot album was Tomcattin.
pedraw My favorite was Strikes
My favorite is Marauder. I'd say we've got it covered.
My favorite is the live album Highway Song. One of the best live albums ever.
I dig all of Blackfoot’s Albums, have them all too, from Flyin’ High to After the reign ( which btw is a badass album in its own right!).
@@sea-dawg - hell yeah, badass cover! Right on bud
Much love to Ricky. Being from Jax I heard a lot of these things as folklore. Fantastic player and singer.
I was fortunate enough to see Rickey and Blackfoot with Ted Nugent in 79. BTW the Scorpions opened up the show!
I too was fortunate enough to see Blackfoot in the early 80's, Molly Hatchet was there also. It was awesome, saw them in Charlotte, NC :)
Saw the Scorp's and the Nuge with Def Leppard in Houston in '79!
DAMN!!! What a Line-up!!
I saw Scorpions and ACDC opening for Ted in 79 . Nobody knew who the opening bands were going in but they sure did going out. Scorpions singer spoke with an accent nobody could understand . And then ACDC singer came out and spoke with a different accent nobody could understand !
@@abelincoln5698 that would be the BEST!
Saw Blackfoot 1982 in Las Vegas they opened for Ted Nugent one HELL of a concert
Still got Marauder on vynil without a scratch on it. My lil jewel dating back to the eighties. B|
Dont forget Toy and Bobby Caldwell RIP and The Marshall Tucker Band.
marc dewey It's Toy and TOMMY Caldwell, not Toy and Bobby. May they both rest in peace.
Toy and Tommy Caldwell, not Bobby
@@levinmoser4001 l
Wow you stuck Bobby Caldwell in the mix wow love him
One of my favorite guitarists. I am native American and into southern rock and heavy metal as well.
