The emotion in her face and voice through this whole song blows me away. The line "How fake they are, I know," really struck me. And the part at the end when she's singing "I could be perfect" over and over is heartbreaking.
I listened to this song and connected with it a bit in my previous relationship. It's only listening to it after that ended that I see the truth behind this song. She's constantly having to prove herself and do all she can for him, but he isn't giving her what she needs. In situations like this it's so hard to see what you need is to end the relationship, instead you end up settling. Adore this version, her emotion is impeccable in every line. Love it.
This song gave me chills :-/ Just got out of the same kind of controlling/abusive relationship. She is so amazing at conveying that emotion, and the lyrics are spot on. It's like if someone could have read my mind 2 months ago and put it into song :(
Her voice.... I've heard a million renditions of the song and never have i loved one more than this. Thank you so much for sharing, truly, its such a joy to watch this. :)
I performed this song with Pasek and Paul at a Theatre Conference, simply because this performance of the song was inspiring enough to drive me to take a chance and go for it. Simply amazing. :)
I love her performance in this song! I think my favourite parts are when she's not singing (even though her voice is amazing!) For example, right at the end of the song, when she finishes, and goes to sit down... there's SO much emotion there! I also love her movement when she sings "Tell me what to do"... soooo good !
It's true. I don't know enough. Don't really get the stuff they say on CNN. I'll work. Get so much smarter. I can try harder. If I mess up, I'll try again. People change, People grow. We rearrange, We let things go. I could be perfect. I could be perfect. Tell me what to do. I could be perfect...for you. Listen. You were right. My friends were bad for me. Thank God you help me see how fake they are. I know. And look. Just like you said I should. I cut them out for good, I should have done that long ago. Now it's just you. And it's just me. Help me through. Try to see... I can be perfect. I can be perfect. The other day your meeting ran too late, I went and ate. I just sat there on my own. The waitor watched me as I read my book, He gave that look like..."How pathetic..she's all alone." I don't want to be alone. Don't let me be alone. No one else can take your place. I am yours and you are mine. So don't tell me we need space. No don't use that fucking line. Now you look me in the face, we are going to be fine. I will be perfect. I will be perfect. I will be perfect. I will be perfect. It's not hard to do. I will be perfect for you.
Ohmygosh thank you for this!! I've wondered for the longest time what the lyrics were in the beginning. "Don't really get the stuff they say on CNN" makes a lot more sense
this might be the most perfect thing i've ever seen. my god, what talent. best acting i've ever seen in anything. and that voice. MASSIVE GIRL CRUSH ON HER.
@CharlitaCharlota There's no set arc to these characters. Each of the songs kind of tell the story in itself. What's good about this show is you can take each song and it'll still make sense on its own. But, if you're doing the show, make sure that the songs that you give to each character don't contradict each other. I did the show a few years ago (i directed it and played Man 1/Boy With Dreams) and it's one of my fondest memories EVER.
Whitney Bashor is amazing! She acts perfectly. Just watching her makes me cry. She completely understands the emotion of this song and portrays it beautifully! And i am much too jealous of her voice..
@vicki16music it's a song cycle which means it's a series of unconnected songs that usually have similar themes it's a popular things for composers who don't have a complete show to put on but i bunch of great separate songs they want to showcase. Jason Robert Brown did the same thing with songs for a new world
+Broadway (and Cupcake) Perfectionist Well, yes. It's about people coming of age and trying to figure out how to solve problems they've never tried to face. This song is clearly about how her relationship is failing, and she thinks it's her fault. She's doing all she can to fix it, but, as we later see in "In Short", the relationship didn't work out and they have to try and move on despite having feelings for each other.
melvyn hardman Nope. Edges is a song cycle, meaning it's composed entirely of unrelated songs. While the actors do duel roles and some can show a sort of relationship progression if you stretch your imagination, not every actor does the duel roles of another actor, as no song is actually connected. The songs from Edges are 3-4 minute glances into the relationships of people, be it a romantic relationship, familial relationship, or friendship. We have no background knowledge of any song, this one included. While it can be fun to speculate, there's no concrete evidence. You mentioned having to do "In Short" for a song profile, but I think that, if you can switch, it would be much easier to do so. If not, try to avoid the question you asked, as anything you put as an answer wouldn't be actual information from the show. If you have any other questions, though. I'd be happy to try and help you out!
finding the sheet music for this musical is almost impossible! i have looked everywhere too!. My school is performing edges and i think that was the only way they were able to get the sheet music, by buying the rights to the show. Hopefully later when they might be avaliable online.:)
thank you SO MUCH FOR POSTING- do you have Pretty sweet day or that one song with the quartet of steven booth and farah and whitney and one other person?? it is my FAVORITE FAVORITE ever. the one that's like "hello, hi, how are you, you look great today etc" thankssss for posting this though! and in short! LOVE THEM
@Kabawesome hey i just saw that you've seen the show edges and was just wondering what you can tell me about it, as I'm singing thsi song for my musical theater exam and am really struggling to find out what it's about or any information on it at all! Is it just singing all the way through? And is it four seperate stories or are they linked somehow? Any information you could give me would be amazing, thanks :)
do you know what, i hate to say people are amazing, but she is amazing! 'perfect' for this song! get goosebumps when the music drops at 2.54! Also, i just love this song! I must have watched this over 50 times!
It seems to me that she's in a very controlling relationship with a guy who belittles her a lot. She's so scared of being alone that she puts up with it and tries to make herself perfect so that he will love her the way she wants him to.
Often times girls with low self esteem (often due to experiences/relationships in their lives) want to be loved and feel like they have to perfect in order to be worth anything. aka this character is in love with being in love; but is always struggling to be worth loving in return. Having entered a relationship where the guy doesnt acknowledge her efforts to be worthy of effort in the relationship, this character is pleading to him (and herself) as she tries to convince him that she is worth loving
+Jessica Stier In our production of this, the one playing her is named Maggie, so I'm just going to refer to her as that to make following it a bit easier, and her love interest's name is Josh. The whole musical is about coming of age and having to face problems you've never had to face before, because getting older and becoming an adult comes with a lot of different things you never knew you'd need to face. Maggie is in a relationship with Josh, and at the time she believes she loves him and that he's the one for her. As many young relationships do, Josh and Maggie are drifting apart, and Maggie is desperately trying to cling to the love she has. She's never been a position where she's without someone who loves her and who she loves around her before, and she's scared to lose it. Josh is trying to break off the relationship ("we need space"), and is putting her off in lieu of other things in his life ("meeting went long"). Maggie is under the, most likely false, impression that she is the one at fault in the relationship by not being good enough, so she's changing everything about herself ("You were right, my friends were bad for me...I cut them out") in order to be 'Perfect' in Josh's eyes. A few minutes later, Maggie does sing "In Short" and it's clear that her efforts were in vain. Both she and Josh have strong feelings for each other, but their relationship just isn't working anymore. They're going to live separately and go their own ways, and you can see that Maggie finally realizes that it's not that she wasn't perfect, it's that they just didn't work. You can also see that she has gotten over the fear of being without an obvious love in her life.
She's a really talented singer, though I will say that our musical theatre department did this for their senior recital this year and the girl singing this did a breath taking performance but also used a different performance, she was more desperate and less angry and broke down crying at the end of the song when he left anyway. While the actress here, i don't really know what she was trying to convey in the end...
+kjimm93 My theatre is currently doing a production of this, and I'm trying to get the sheet music for it. If I do manage to get it, would you still like it?
i love it when an actor takes you on a journey throughout the song.
she did exactly that.
Tears. Full tears. Good Lord.
Her voice.... I've heard a million renditions of the song and never have i loved one more than this. Thank you so much for sharing, truly, its such a joy to watch this. :)
She looks so much like Anna Kendrick!
Emily Johnson No, Annaleigh Ashford. Seriously...

Her gesturing, bobbing her head, and head movement while singing is so much like Anna it's crazy!! Also, sorry I'm replying to this 2 years late
I was thinking more Bridgit mendler
I found this song last night and I have already listened to it 15 times. She conveys this emotion so well.

Ugh Whitney is such a queen and Pasek and Paul are amazing and song cycles. I stan song cycles.
Whitney Bashor is amazing! She acts perfectly. Just watching her makes me cry. She completely understands the emotion of this song and portrays it beautifully! And i am much too jealous of her voice..
You are brilliant. This is wondeful. I wish I could sing like you!
this song basically taught me how to mix its a beautiful song and edges should be on broadway!!!
OMG this is amazing.. just chills :)
The mix smoothly into belt at 2:31 👌

+Unicorn Films yoo this is so much more than 'the relationship is failing'. it screams emotional abuse and manipulation (towards her)
Ailsa Bennett
Possibly. Or she could see it as her fault through means of her own, and not from him. We''ll never actually know
Holy shit this is so emotional it’s insane!!
I HAVE MISSED THIS VIDEO DEARLY
Her emotional connection to this song is impeccable. She's fucking brilliant.
I want this show to come over to Germany !
she is SOOOOO good. holy moly
Just SO good
finding the sheet music for this musical is almost impossible! i have looked everywhere too!. My school is performing edges and i think that was the only way they were able to get the sheet music, by buying the rights to the show. Hopefully later when they might be avaliable online.:)

Dear audience member,

I’m laughing too hard at this ten year old comment.
do you have coasting? the new version they did in this show???? cravvvvinnnggggg it.
she's great!
she's phenomenal.
mixing is like a mix between belting and head voicing a song/note when your singing
She acts this incredibly. I'm so jealous.
Does someone have a link to the entire show?
This song just goes straight for the feels and stabs them repeatedly
This was the production in Albany at Capital Reperatory Theater last fall.
thank you SO MUCH FOR POSTING-
do you have Pretty sweet day or that one song with the quartet of steven booth and farah and whitney and one other person?? it is my FAVORITE FAVORITE ever. the one that's like "hello, hi, how are you, you look great today etc"

this is giving anna kendrick in the last five years
her name is Whitney Bashor

I'd love to know who the singer is!
Still Genius performance.
Does anyone know where I can get the sheet music for not ten dollars?
In non-existant land
+kjimm93 My theatre is currently doing a production of this, and I'm trying to get the sheet music for it. If I do manage to get it, would you still like it?
+Unicorn Films I WOULD!!!
+Unicorn Films Anyway I could get it as well?? Its just so beautiful!
+Unicorn Films Anyway that offer is still up? I would love to sing this for my last 5 years audition
