How do you feel about the movie Braveheart as a Scot? Personally, I look at the movie like I look at 300. 300 was the legend of the Spartans, Braveheart is the legend of William Wallace. At least, that's the way I see it. But I am an American, so I don't see this movie through the Scottish lens. How do Scots view this movie?

The real battle at Stirling was at a bridge. They let part of the English army cross then attacked that half and trapped /killed the rest on the bridge. oh and from what i understand and have read William Wallace never met/or knew Robert the Bruce.

William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded.
The audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution.
First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London.
First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground.
Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets.
After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him.
Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire.
The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded.
Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).

I enjoyed your review of Braveheart, thank you so much for sharing it with us…William Wallace was a real Scottish hero, and his death was more brutal than was seen in this film, we have a national Monument dedicated to him. The princess of Wales was three at the time of his death and was living in France. Robert the Bruce was not at the battle of Falkirk fighting for the Scottish or English. The Irish did switch sides but came over to the Scottish side the night before the battle. The shortest distance between Scotland and Ireland is sixteen miles across the Irish sea. The English did kill Muireann because they could not get Wallace.
Scotland did win its freedom at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 were there is a monument to Robert the Bruce and a visitor centre. you should watch the Outlaw King which is historically accurate and shows how Robert the Bruce became king.

Happy new year first of all. Love to see a gentleman (Larry) and a lady (Lia) enjoying the film and each other. Another film, ROBERT THE BRUCE (2019) begins in 1314 (which is the last scene of Braveheart) and shows more kicking more tyrannical english. It is historically accurate. It is truly EVEN MORE EPIC than Braveheart (as it is privately produced with no hollywood influence). It stirs my (ancestral) Scottish blood every time; am ready for a fight and to defend the ladies ALWAYS!!! I am also proud to be a SOUTHERNER who lives in MISSISSIPPI. "Based on a true story." That's highly debatable: this film is notoriously historically inaccurate. For ex, Braveheart itself is a title referring to Robert the Bruce, not William Wallace; blue warpaint was used 1000 years prior to the events of the film; tartan kilts weren't worn until 500 years after the events of the film; his father wasn't killed when he was a boy; his uncle didn't exist; he never met Isabella of France, let alone fathered her child; & historians have found no evidence that there was ever such a thing as the Jus Primae Noctis law. The TH-cam channel History Buffs has a great video on the historical (non-) accuracy of this film & many others.

    • @helifanodobezanozi7689
      @helifanodobezanozi7689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's drama, meant for entertainment purposes, not educational. Note the words "Based on", which indicates that while some events and chacters are real, others are there for narrative purposes. This is a legal distinction that exists within the US film industry. There is a lower level of historical accuracy which uses the phrase "Inspired by a true story" as well. While History Buffs does a great job with producing his content, he fails to understand simple fact that in "dramtic" filmmaking, drama does and should supercede historic accuracy. Documentaries are the only films that should be concerned with strict historical accuracy.
Another TH-camr who does excellent historical content and understands this fact is Atun-Shei films. Here is a video he did responding to Brandon F regarding another Mel Gibson film, The Patriot: m.th-cam.com/video/vUPzO3r1Tak/w-d-xo.html

Real Story, however, keep in mind this is a Mel Gibson film and is in fact amongst the most historically inaccurate films ever made.
Real Story-In 1286, Alexander III, King of Scots, died and his own legitimate child was a two-year-old princess. This led to a succession dispute, in which 13 noblemen came forward with claims on the Scottish throne, most prominent amongst them Robert Bruce and John Comyn. Edward "Longshanks" I, King of England, offered to mediate, but instead made himself Overlord of Scotland. This led to the First War of Scottish Independence, in which William Wallace emerged as a national hero of Scotland.
Amongst the historical inaccuracies include the kilts, the lack of a bridge at Sterling, and the love affair with Princess Isabella, who would have been a child and still living in France.

This is a terrific movie ... it has precious little to do with actual history though.
The only things that are true in this movie are that Sir William Wallace and Robert the Bruce are Scottish heroes. And that Scotland did indeed win its freedom thanks to Robert.
The whole "Princess of Wales" thing, is complete Hollywood - as is Wallace avenging his non-existent wife.
But it doesn't bother me at all - if it bothers anyone about this masterpiece, just change "Scotland" into "Randovia" and England into "Skrepovia" ... when you set this in a fictional world, it becomes the VERY BEST piece of fantasy story-telling you will ever see!

The real Robert The Bruce never betrayed Wallace , he was as much a Scottish hero and patriot as William Wallace. Wallace was betrayed by an unnamed Scot but not Robert The Bruce.

This is my favourite movie ever, because I'm Scottish, and even though this is loosely based on the true story of William Wallace, there are parts that are far fetched, like William Wallace and the princess of Wales having an affair, she was only about 10 when Wallace attacked England.

When Larry says "based on a true story," well .... very very, very, very loosely based on the real story of William Wallace. But there's no denying it is powerful kind of film, and Lia & Larry were certainly riveted by it. The movie still moves people, even after nearly thirty years !
