I was 13. Played this on an arcade. My mind was blown away. Didn't stop talking about the L power and F power for a day. It's a masterpiece.
Masterpiece design sound and soundtrack. I still listen to this in the gym when I am on a treadmill.
It’s nice to know that I am not the only one who listens to background tunes of video games, I think it’s a weird interest lol

We played this all the time as a teen I never knew it was originally an arcade game
I just bought the Contra anniversary collection on x-box one and I have to get used to the controls and craziness all over again after 30+ years
Damn, this looks relentless. And I thought NES Contra was tough
It isn't. The game is extremely easy.
It is much harder just a shorter game with no cheat code
@@JWBabaYaga Well once you get the knack of it, it's not too tough, but it's a hard road to get said knack.
Yeah the arcade's better but NES is fun too.
The nes version is not better it's that most people played this game on the nes so the nostalgia hits them hard, The arcade version buy far looks way better
Same story with all of the contemporary NES arcade titles. They did a great job with the ports, but they had to make cuts in various areas - resolution, color depth, sound/music, overall sprite detail, etc. This was due to a number of factors, but the biggest were hardware limitations in the NES (especially by 1990), and limitations in ROM size.
Looks better visually
LOOKS better, but in terms of gameplay and balance, the NES version has it beat. Also, I played it first in the arcade and still find the NES version better. Also, the soundtrack didn't sound as tinny on the home version.

There’s no time limit on the side scrolling levels? What happened if the player killed all enemies and didn’t move for a long period?

I think a lot of the enemies just respawn at certain areas, so you'd die eventually.
This version is better just needs to be longer I can't even get through the 13 minutes though lol
Never seen this, came here after the AVGN latest episode. Kinda look amd sound like PC engine, I guess?
Looks and sounds closer to a Mega Drive imo. In fact, the Mega Drive was built around common arcade hardware (most notably, SEGA's own System 16 machine)

Feels like the color palette was starved of color compared to the Nintendo version. So much grey in this version.

I noticed that, so much grey. And the graphics quality varied quite a lot. Some areas the water is just flat floodfill of #0000ff blue, other areas it's quite pretty.
It depends on color settings too. Many younger folks only know the NES. I played both, & the arcade is better. Contra 2 is cool also. 😊

first arcade game and game I ever played 1988 9 years old in a very small village area, they only had this machine lol. Pretty sure bill was inspired by commando and lance was rambo.
Nifty as it was, it's pretty clear that the NES version was a much more balanced and polished experience.
I still enjoy it. But I lost my edge on it since I haven't played in years.
Noo, arcade is better. From the graphics to the sounds. NES was still fun tho. 🙃
@@TeranIcer It had better graphics, but that's it. The balance and gameplay was much better in the NES, not to mention it had more content.
@@MarquisLeary34 All console versions had the advantage of coming after the arcade, so content's gonna be added. As far as overall game play I'm taking the arcade, plus the arcade had no cheat codes so u HAD to be good.
@@TeranIcer The difficulty curve was also absurd at points, because it's trying to get you to spend quarters. You also had to be good to beat the NES version without cheats, and the difficulty was more balanced. I still say the NES version was a rare case of the home version being better.

I think the nes version is better for thisone, at leas i see the stages are kind of longer for starters and the music kind of better.
Arcade cabinets back then had technical limitations
So why didn't Konami release these 2 arcade games on Sega Genesis and make a few extra bucks.
Because we got Contra Hard Corps instead

I didnt get any guns till I got to stage 3 so I can get the barrells..
I’ve started playing it like that recently. I wanted to beat the game without dying but I would always die once at the end of stage 3 no matter which gun a had… so I wouldn’t get any of the special guns so I could get the barrier and was finally able to beat the game without dying. I can beat the game now without dying and without the barrier but it’s only 50% of the time.
sounds like the same sound chip as the Sega Genesis, wonder if I'm correct...
