- A playthrough of Konami's 2009 run-and-gun shooter for the Nintendo Wii, Contra Rebirth.
Played through on the normal difficulty setting.
Contra Rebirth was released as part of Konami's ReBirth trilogy, a line of retro-styled "throwback" sequels to the company's most popular franchises from the late 1980s. It was only ever sold as a WiiWare title - there haven't been any ports of it to other systems, and you can no longer buy it from the Wii Shop Channel.
Like Gradius Rebirth and Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, Contra ReBirth takes its inspiration from classic Konami games of the late 1980s/early 1990s. The graphics and sound are upgraded versions of what we originally saw in the company's 16-bit arcade hardware, and the gameplay takes most of its cues from Contra III: The Alien Wars.
The game has only five stages total, but it is a pretty intense ride while it lasts. The character selection is pretty fun, with Bill Rizer and Yagyu (from NeoContra) taking the lead, and Brownie (Contra Hard Corps) and Plissken (Kurt Russell) cosplaying as a dinosaur, I guess?) becoming selectable after finishing the game on the easy and normal difficulty levels, respectively.
You'll fight through a space station, a (comfortably familiar) ruined cityscape, a parade of military jeeps and robot camels, a volcano, and the alien's lair before it's all done, and there are some wicked set-pieces. My favorite has to be the bit where you hitch a ride on a rocket that's taking off. The gameplay will instantly feel like home to anyone that ever played a classic 2D Contra game - the mechanics have all been translated perfectly, and the ability to anchor your character to the floor while you aim is a true God send. Even better for those than love the older titles is how Contra III's two-gun weapon system makes a return, as do most of the classic Contra armaments, though the awesome flamethrower is lamentably missing in action.
And finally, the presentation is pretty excellent here. Just like the other Rebirth titles, the graphics are all comprised of pseudo 16-bit pixel art, though the smooth rotation and scaling effects, floods of enemies, and massive explosions would've all been far beyond the abilities of the SNES or the Genesis. It looks like what you remember, but in reality, it's a pretty huge boost. The music is the same, though instead of going with the SNES-style sample-based playback, Contra ReBirth's remixes of classic tracks go with heavy drum samples that enthusiastically punch through the wicked FM-synth arrangements. The music is not as good as Contra 4, granted, but it still makes for a highly enjoyable, nostalgic listening experience.
While Contra: ReBirth isn't going to upset the pecking order among the top games of the Contra franchise, it's easily one of the best Contra games to be released since Hard Corps on the Sega Genesis, and it effortlessly blows away the PS1 entries. If you're a hardcore Konami or Contra fan, you need to find a way to play this.

This story made as much sense as an elevator in an outhouse
Contra Rebirth was an excellent addition to Konami's trilogy of Wiiware throwbacks - it feels like just like the classic 16-bit games, and these graphics and music are an awesomely nostalgic tribute to old-school gaming.
@Nicholas Rumleskie Yup, I have it done. It'll be posted soon. I liked it a lot. Not as much as I did this and Castlevania, but then again, Gradius wasn't ever my favorite Konami series. The quality is pretty comparable to the other Rebirth games, though. It looks, sounds, and plays like early 90s Konami.
Can you do it in hard mode? Is this game like Contra 3 the alien wars that if you put it in harder settings the boss characters do more things in the harder settings

All three Konami/M2 ReBirth games were absolutely phenomenal, it's insane they haven't been re-released on any other platform.

Imagine you wake up naked on a futuristic cyberpunk chair made of dinosaur foot and a small robot girl is staring at you with her one unblinking eye, and she tells you you gotta go shoot some little space lizard otter lookin dudes. What a strange game

At least this game is NOT part of the series' original canon because it takes place in an alternate timeline/universe in which everything is ridiculously nonsensical and somewhat crazily fucked up. Not to mention that the Contras and the alien invaders themselves have been reduced to a bunch of idiots that wreak havoc and stupidity on Earth.

If Konami had any sense (which they don't these days IMO) they would re-release all those Wiiware titles on the Switch as the Rebirth Collection.

Well let's see......They fired Hideo Kojima and burned all bridges with him thus alienating 95% of their player base, turned the Metal Gear series into a dumpster fire, and refuse to make any new games with the IP's that are some of the most beloved in gaming history. Need I say more?

This game gave me many memories. It was the first run and gun game I ever played. And it was awesome. I loved shooting the aspect of shooting other things. The wii ware games were what got me into gaming into the first place. It lead into 360, PC and eventually Ps4. It was a gate way. And Im sure many people can say the same.

I still have this downloaded on my Wii U. As someone that's beaten most of the Contra games, I will say Contra 4, Rebirth, and Hard Crops Uprising are the top 3 hardest Contra games in the series.

I agree with Contra 4 and HC Uprising being two of the hardest in the series (alongside Contra Hard Corps on the Megadrive/Genesis and Contra Shattered Soldier on PS2) but Contra ReBirth is one of the easiest in my opinion (just like Operation C on GameBoy and Contra III on SNES). Maybe I played these too much and they seem just right to me. xD
3 on the SNES was absolute hell if you wanted the real ending. I beat hard corps on a legit cartridge, and to this day I cannot do three without savestates.

Still kicking myself for not getting this for my Wii U via the Wii channel. I have Gradius ReBirth, but for some reason just never pulled the trigger on Castlevania and Contra. Oh well. Maybe someone at Konami will port them to the Switch as a package or something.

I’m 14 but when I was 6 my dad had a wii and we would play this game of course I wasn’t the best but it was good memories now I have finally found the game the most we have gotten is the Dude who throws shuriken things it was fun while it lasted now it has gone downhill but I atleast I can now say I have found the game

I'm not familiar with the whole series so I don't know if that music originated in the earliest games already, but I'm so glad to hear several remixes of pieces from Hardcorps. The headless robot is somewhat similar to the one from the highway chase there, and the same music plays during its boss fight. I also love how the monster first seen as Super C's final boss and reappeared in various iterations, becomes just an annoying pest here.
IMO the PS2 games weren't bad but one looked really cheap (but that fish...), while the other strayed too much from the formula by using only the bird's eye view; at least it embraced total ridiculousness, and this one follows suit, at this point the dark atmosphere of Contra III has been an exception (even though the second level of Rebirth homages it).
Maddeningly, beside being another "lost" game you can't get legally anymore, there has been no follow-up, so the already confusing timeline (if there was ever one they cared for) has been left with that huge unresolved cliffhanger at the end, I mean, your ally reveals himself to be the (presumed) big bad, another ally tells she knew already and offers an allinace... who knew where it could have led.
@DaveQB To be honest, we don't need a direct followup/sequel to this game. It's better off as an standalone game.

This game is honestly an massive downgrade and a disappointment when compared to the earlier Contra installments.
It's a $10 Wiiware title meant as a throwback to all the great moments in the Contra series. Given how much content is packed in for that price, and how well it captures the control and feel of the classic Contra games, what the hell were you expecting?
@@iniche I know Contra as a franchise had great games back in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras of gaming. But everything else that came after Hard Corps is just downright depressing and disappointing.
