- In this episode we stumble upon some gorgeous reef, talk about our weather fax setup, and finally we set out to explore remote and quiet Punta Allen on foot.
One of our favorite aspects of cruising is the ability to access places that are difficult to reach. To access Punta Allan by land, you have to take a dirt road for about 3 hours through the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, and once you arrive, there isn’t much by way of accommodation. As a result, only very dedicated travelers make it to Punta Allen.
We reached Punta Allen by dinghy and docked next to a handful of fishing, lobstering, and tourist pangas getting ready for a day of work out on the water.
When we walked the dock that snaked into town, we are so pleasantly surprised to stumbled upon a seemingly undiscovered, sleepy fishing town right on the water with sandy roads, kids playing in the streets, very lazy dogs lounging around, puppies scampering about, and many friendly faces.

Even with about 65-years of on-water experience, I learn new things all the time. Technology is always changing. I love how Jordan gets the weather map from an SSB. Who knew? ;-) Very cool touristy stuff, and really enjoy seeing how other people live. It really makes me appreciate what comforts we have here in the US, but still triggers something in me that makes the wanderlust explode. For now, I'll be happy going down to Key West to visit friends in a few weeks. It might be party central there if COVID hasn't killed it. The pups were so cute! Love and luck, guys.

One of your best videos yet! I really love watching you guys develop your creative style while hunting down these amazing unspoiled destinations! Every time I watch one of your videos I can't help but notice how low the subscriber count is on my way to clicking thumbs up. I'm guessing you guys just haven't hit it big on the TH-cam algorithm lottery yet. I can't see any other reason why it would be so low, it seems like you're doing everything just right.

Like GazLowe said, the content mix was perfectly balanced! You two are awesome. Jordan, I couldn’t agree with you more on how ridiculous the life jacket rule is there. Bummer. Good thing Desiree had the hawk eye ready! I can’t help but think: is freediving seen different than scuba as far as this rule goes? I can’t understand why freediving wouldn’t be treated equally. If so, what’s the difference in freediving and snorkeling? Ok I guess the rule really is just that stupid.. definitely more appropriate ways to protect the ecosystem

Hey Derek! Thanks so much for watching! Yeah, the life jacket rule is pretty annoying. We'd be happy to show our scuba certificates to be able to purchase a free diving license or something like that.We understand the need to protect the reef - we're avid reef lovers! When we worked on charter boats in key west, we had our paying guests repeat after us "under no circumstance will I stand up or touch anything". Even after drilling our guests, some still stood up. Sometimes people just don't listen. And I get that's probably why blanket rules like this overall protect the reef. BUT again, we'd like the opportunity to pass a test, or show our cert. to be able to free dive. Thanks for mentioning Jordan's editing style- he's been testing out some new techniques which we both love! Glad its shining through :) THanks again for watching and saying hello!

It was super cool! Wish we had the camera! Not too quiet for us- we really like getting away from civilization when we can :)

The underwater footage is looking good. Adding an external antenna to the world band radio should help with your reception. Have you tried the HF Weather Fax app with your radio as another receiving option?

Attach a long piece of wire to the antenna of your SSB receiver and run the wire to the outside of the boat and you will get better reception of the weather faxes

Right! It was so tempting NOT to find the owners and see if they would be willing to send their little pup on a sailing adventure with us! We decided to give it another year before making any pet decisions though :)

Have you thought about getting a better external antenna?
I used to have that receiver, get a external antenna for it. The radio should have a plug in the back for it. The antenna is just a long wire.

I would love to know how your keep your mizzen sta'sl out of the blades of your wind gen. We also have a ketch, and I'm thinking of mounting the wind gen on top of the mizzen to avoid conflict w/the mizzen stay'sl. How difficult is it to keep the two apart?
Hey Brett! Good question! We installed our Silent Wind before we bought our mizzen stay'sl so we really just lucked out that it's not a problem :). That being said, we do turn on the brake every time we use it juuuust in case. No problems yet, haha! Fingers crossed! On the other hand, our main topping lift when loose does sometimes get fouled in the silent wind, so we just have to be extra careful. Ooooh ketches!! Jordan probably has a better (more technical) response for you, so I'll ask him to hop on too. -Desiree!

Everyone plays by the same rules because there isn't any way to determine who is a pro diver and who is not. It actually makes sense if you look at it from their point of view. For example... you know as a good sailor you shouldn't litter but everywhere you go amongst the islands there's plenty of garbage to be seen. Be safe.
