    The Army sent me from N.Y.C. to Germany via the English Channel and the North Sea in January 1965 aboard U.S.N.S. Geiger. The North Atlantic as a millpond for the crossing. The rough weather came in the Channel, which we transited on the heels of the worst Channel storm in decades. We were in loose company with a tanker maybe half a mile off our port beam. Although it was forbidden, I went out on deck during the worst of the pitching and rolling. Strolling the companionways required one to put one hand on the deck to steady oneself. Think about that for a minute...! The ship was rolling so badly that while we were watching the movie Tom Jones in the salon that night one soldier sitting on the floor near the screen on the starboard side suddenly lost purchase and slid more than 100 feet on the parquet deck all the way back to the projector. Lots of fun, that 10-day trip!

      At almost 534 feet it's not like she was a "dingy" or anything either, it must have been rough seas! Even though Canadian I like to say Thank You to all of our Military Vets, without your efforts to make the world a better place a lot of people would not enjoy the freedoms we all take for granted at times. Thank You .....

    Hey you two! Great vid.
    Recommend when cooking lobster= heat water until boiling with sea food flavoring, add lobster into boiling water for a short time 2-3 minutes. Floating in water may indicate sufficient cooking. Long cooking times turns them to rubber. Then remove from water. Cut in half. Sprinkle with seasoning salt. Coat in butter. Broil in oven under broil close to heating element until slightly brown on top. Eat with melted butter. Mmmmhhhhhh

    At 12:50 your chart shows the south West Point of Cuba. The Cuban Government has a resort just a click north of that point. Back in 1999 My girlfriend and I hiked to that point. A four foot tall concrete structure with a brass plate gives the Longitude and Latitude and says in Spanish that, This is where the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea meet. Needless to say my girlfriend jumped off the shallow sea urchin covered reef. I then said to myself that I wanna jump in where these two bodies of water join forces. The snorkel we had back up the coast to the resort is still in one of my top five snorkels ever!
    Enjoy those waters buddies!!!

  • @flyinggybe2113
    @flyinggybe2113 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good to see you having fun in Cuba, it's an interesting place and the south coast has much to offer. By the way, grease on winch pawls is a no-no. Once the grease gets pasty from dirt and salt, the pawls will stick and can make the winch unsafe. Only use light oil on winch pawls. Also, a very light layer of grease on other winch parts will keep them working freely longer. Again, dirt and salt build-up in the grease will make it pasty and increase friction.

    If you have an old winch you can't get replacement springs for, you can use almost any carbon steel that's the right size, to make your own. Steel Springs have to be high carbon steel to work, and that tends to corrode in salt water, and need to be replaced. I've used fish hooks, musical instrument strings, but I keep a couple sizes of "drill rod" that you can get at places that sell metal or welding supplies. It's basically drill bit material without the grooves in it. It usually comes unhardened, so it will bend and stay bent, most sailors have spare bolts on board, and you can use the threads of the bolt to wrap nice even turns of your spring, looking very shipshape. Leave ends long for more leverage, then cut them down to size. Next you need to harden the spring, so it will retain the shape you worked so hard to make. You can heat it up with a little $20 map gas torch, or even in a campfire on the beach, if you are using junk steel of unknown carbon content, you'll have to experiment a little, just like an old timey blacksmith, it takes a little practice, but absurdly useful skill to have if you sail away from the chandlery dock, or have obsolete parts on your boat. So basically the hotter you heat the steel, the harder it will be when you quench it. Dull cherry red is coldest, then orange yellow and white. Sparks flying off when it's white means too hot and it's ruined for something that needs to have a specific temper, like springs or cutting tools. Start at the lower end, because if you make the spring too soft, you can make it harder, but too hard and it might break. You'll know it's too soft because when you flex the spring, it won't spring back. Things like winches that you have multiple of, are great cause if one pawl spring breaks, you have a good one to use as a model. Coil springs are much more forgiving to make for beginners than flat springs, the flex is spread out over more metal, and they break less.
    Give it a try, if you can maintain your own boat, you can totally make a pawl spring, it could save your bacon, or impress the heck out of that charming sailor across the anchorage you have your eye on, when you make them one, hah.

    Anyway, like I was sayin', lobster is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, lobster-kabobs, lobster creole, lobster gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple lobster, lemon lobster, coconut lobster, pepper lobster, lobster soup, lobster stew, lobster salad, lobster and potatoes, lobster burger, lobster sandwich. That- that's about it.

    Been following you two for several days from my cottage at the Myron Stratton Home in Colorado Springs. No doubt Jordan has already been told he could double a younger Val Kilmer. The resemblance is uncanny given the difference in ages. Didn't notice it right away until I got to the episodes uploaded from Cuba and Mexico. Until then Jordan looked familiar. But I tumbled to why on the second or third upload from your Mexican adventures. Amazing.

    YOU CAN MAKE A SPRING!!!!! Get STEEL wire. (Not copper) Wrap steel
    wire around appropriate size mandrel. Form desired springs shape. Heat in torch flame until it looses its magnetism plus a small bit more. While hot immediately drop in oil. This hardens it to make it springy, but it will be brittle! !!!! It’s called quenching. Now put in oven at 400 degrees for two hours, then turn off heat. let cool slowly in oven for two hrs until cool. If springs are brittle and break do this step 2 to 4 times. Bingo you have a new spring.

    That Pearson 424 sure looks like a nice boat. Sounds like it's vintage 1980's but I'm wondering the specific year of build. And let's see, lobster. Lobster, lobster, lobster, . . . I maybe have it once a year, due to the expense, and one frozen tail is half the size of those (4,5 or 6) tails you had there! Are those the lobster tails you got from the fisherman in exchange for some rum? Probably so. Finally, is the storm going to hit next episode? : - O

    Hey Bud! I’m chasing a rabbit down the hole, forgive me. But didn’t you friend up with a guy who had a boat with standard size aft cabin, 40’ish I think a ketch, but entering forward you found another large berth port and hanging lockers starboard with nav station, then the galley, and a bow head? What type was that. To tell you the truth, I watch a lot of sail tube and get them mixed up. Say hi to D. Love the travels.

    Your extensive inventory catalog corresponding to exact location of parts is very impressive! I love projects but if I have to spend 2 hours looking for everything I need to complete it, I chuck it to the corner and crack a beer! Interesting how Wavelength while much bigger, lacks storage. Trade living space for storage space, hmmmmm. (Every form of refuge has it's price). Curious, would you trade Atticus for the 424? I'm thinking no. Does your boat design come in a bigger model? Also, great comment on what you give up to cruise. Luxury for Lobster! I'll go with the decapod.............Boss
