      I wouldn't call that his mistake tho. The lack of indication that would be a problem, is more a mistake on the dev side. Like, when you start the tutorial, it should indicate on the "Play the tutorial" box, that you should turn hints on for best experience or something like that.

      Hey, just wanted to point out a little inconsistency with the drinking/eating part. The hint, interaction and mission step validation all center around just picking the item up, with no direction about how to actually use them. Olli is doing it out of habit and maybe hasn't noticed, but I imagine a new player would be happy with just seeing the next step of the mission unlock and thus wouldn't actually be taught how to use those item once out in the world.
      Would be a good place to mention the mechanics of sipping/chugging by either clicking or holding the mouse button, I've often seen people go through hours of gameplay without knowing about that. Could be even better to make the player have a helmet to remove so he gets acquainted to that part of the mechanic, although that might be more work than it's worth.
      Anyway, good job getting that thing going!

    Much better with the "Hints" turned on. Still missing some things though.
    1). Press "I" for inventory to equip the helmet. (Olli may have short circuited this by doing it before it was prompted.)
    2). Tell players about the mouse wheel BEFORE prompted to take off. This will prevent crashing into the top of the hanger on first take off.
    3). Ship MFDs are a thing and have a lot of functionality. How about mentioning that?
    4). No prompt to shut ship down after landing. You know, so when it is retrieved next time it isn't floating in the air in the hanger and unable to be entered.
    5). No prompt to close ship up to prevent mischief of other players.
    6). No prompt for using the inner thought wheel (Hold F + Right click)
    Otherwise it is good. It does mention the mouse wheel after take off. The mouse wheel functions is a thrust limiter, which has the side effect of limiting speed. I do hate the change they made to it for 3.18. I used to be able to scale the thrust down for nice gentle landings using the mouse wheel. Now it goes from too much thrust to no thrust and with coupled mode on that means you just hover there instead of descending for a landing. Scroll the mouse wheel up one click and strafe down and you land like you are angry at the landing gear.
    On 4 and 5 one would hope players would think to shut the ship down and close the door, but it doesn't even remind one what the key is.
    3 is unnecessary, but the MFDs can help a lot when one forgets what some of the keybinds are. When I learned you could use the MFDs to request landing in 3.16 I stopped using F11. Reason being I could keep flying the ship towards the landing location. Pressing F11 means the mobiglas comes up and blocks the whole screen so you can't see if you are about to fly into something. Using the MFDs relegates the ATC call to one of the cockpit displays so you can see where you are flying while the call goes through and ATC assigns a landing pad or hanger.
    The Inner thought wheel comes in handy when forgetting key binds as well or when getting around bugs. For the 3.18 patch cycle requesting takeoff/landing did not work for me when pressing F11, using the MFDs, or the assigned keybind. The only way I've been able to request takeoff/landing was to use the "Request Landing" option of the inner thought menu. I didn't even know it was an option until someone in global chat told me during the 3.18 patch cycle.

    • @RobinHartJones
      @RobinHartJones ปีที่แล้ว

      You may be confused. The mouse wheel controls the **speed** limiter and there is another control, something like Alt-mousewheel? (I mapped it to a joystick wheel), to set the thrust level. Also, if you are using a throttle then 50% throttle gives you half the speed set by your speed limiter.

    • @The_Opinion_of_Matt
      @The_Opinion_of_Matt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobinHartJones I am not confused. The "speed limiter" has been mislabeled ever since its implementation. It operates as a thrust limiter, i.e. the lower it is set the less thrust is provided by the thrusters. If it was simply a speed limiter it would still result in very rapid acceleration, but to a lower maximum speed. Instead at low settings the acceleration is greatly attenuated, or at least it was prior to 3.18.

    With the hints on it's an entirely different experience. Outstanding work on their part. (and good on you for admitting your error) The only thing I'd like to add is them prompting you to go change your imprint in the hospital to the tutorial. It's really something everyone ought to do, to the point where I'd say it's the first thing to do on arriving in a new station unless you know why you don't want to.

      It's possible the way regeneration works isn't how they want it to work in the grand scheme of things, so higher ups would fight against putting it in the tutorial and making it 'official' so to speak.

      Generally agree with your point … just keep in mind that the tutorial is supposed to cover „the first 30 minutes“.
      And I think this tutorial will help new players (if they decide to actually do it) and reduce the number of redundant questions in chat like „how do I turn on my ship“ (especially during the free flight events).

    Even a simple bit of text that says "Please ensure Hints/Ship Entry Labels, etc are enabled in the options Menu." I can totally see that someone might play the game for a bit they might disable some of the options, then they don't play the game again for months or even years, it should still prompt the player to ensure everything is going to show up and make sense.
    Not to mention that in a few months or years or whatever, there will be new things in the tutorial, including other tutorials for mining and such. Things that even veteran players might want to brush up on, or learn about new features.

  • @liamjames2956

    Can always count on Olli to own up to mistakes, great video.
    I think your right with the tutorial automatically changing that setting. Would have to be only that setting though. They have obviously thought about key binds when building this as the hints show your current key binds, not the generic one. So maybe a script to toggle that setting on while in the tutorial only would be a great addition

  • @Tsudico
    @Tsudico ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just a couple nitpicks about the tutorial, but I think it's definitely a much better experience for new players. They really need to go into equipping your helmet so you don't just purchase one at Area18 and reach Bajini Point without it (also would introduce inventory management). Once you get to Bajini Point, they also should have you set your respawn location at the clinic, so you know how to do that.
    When I and a couple org mates went through the tutorial a few of us had checkpoints that seemed to not activate. Mine occurred when reaching the lobby so I had to go back to a hangar and then it registered but another person had missed the tram and couldn't seem to activate the checkpoint beyond that point. I'm sure they'll get the issues figured out and it puts new players in a far better place once completed.

    Couple of things that are really missing, and could have been integrated into the tutorial rather easily
    - Opening inventory and equipping helmet
    - Using MobiGlass to access missions (would have fit nicely after storing the tutorial ship)
    - Using the chat to ask for help, tips and tricks (tutorial could have ended with this)
    Also, I don't know if this is in, as I haven't actually played the tutorial, but it would be nice if all the tips were stored in the journal afterwards as they are only shown for a few seconds each.

    It's roughly five months later. The CitizenCon just finished a few hours ago. I bought some stuff (digital CitizenCon goodies and a ship) and am getting into the game right now. I played SC a few years ago for a very short time and decided I would revisit it later. This time, I had some challenges and decided to watch a tutorial video. I found this video and decided to watch it because I just watched a video you made a few days ago about the new (I forget what they're called, but quantum destinations should be "good enough").
    I'm halfway through this video and have decided to move along to another video because this has turned into a tutorial on how to be tilted about the video you made yesterday with default settings turned off. There was very little extra help or advice given that a truly new player would find useful. There was a lot of grumbling about the wasted effort from making the previous video.
    I'm sure I'll be back later to watch more of your SC content.

    I sometimes use auto-land because I think it gives an advantage to whether you can refuel or not (and sometimes I am just lazy). I think the game auto-detects whether or not you have joysticks attached. If you do, you get which joystick buttons to use. If you don't and are just using a mouse, it only gives what mouse buttons to press. You must have had your sticks plugged in (also, I bet that if you had a controller plugged in it would give you which controller buttons to press).

    The tutorial was good enough for a new player. Gets them to their ship and shows how to buy stuff and eat etc. I'm very happy they didn't add mining, salvage, combat to the tutorial as it could make it hours long. Have these as separate optional tutorials you can try as a player gets used to the game. They wouldn't let you access your ships if you didn't do it which if your an experienced player was irritating.

As someone that doesn’t own a PC or have much knowledge about them, I have 2 questions? How much would a PC cost that could run the game now as well as through completion of the game without upgrading components? And, would I also need to be pretty smart with all aspects of computers to be able to adjust or fine tune a lot of different things? To be fair, they should probably make the tutorial hints show up regardless of the "Show Hints" or note whether it's turned off in the settings in the future, but I can see how that could have slipped through the cracks. It'd be rare for a user to have the default settings not set on a first play through, but if they played arena commander or something where the hints are less useful, they may had turned off the hints in the overall game settings before entering PU for the first time.

    It works so much better with the proper settings on.
    When I started (v2.5), Autoland didn't work very well, but I could take off and land "any" ship (when available), first try like a BOSS... until the flight engine was updated. ;-)
    Yes, this would have been so helpful when I started, I didn't even know what "WSAD" was. ;-D

      I believe theres still the bug ingame, that you spawn completely new ship and it looks like it flew through warzone :D

    there should still be some indication that you need hints on, or that you turned them off. Maybe there is now. But I wouldn't call that your mistake. I would call it an oversight of the devs.

    Who's playing Zelda: TOTK atm?. Can't believe it got a leak, real stable and performance with the 60fps on a 3090 is pretty excellent imo. Also, Yuzu seems to be pretty solid on the latest build . Enjoy the leak

    I got very frustrated my first time doing the tutorial. I did not have hints or ship entry on by default let alone know they exist. This was a couple months back and I ended up have to search for everything on TH-cam. Had I also not have a friend help guide me I would probably just uninstall the game.

    I'd say one step after storing the ship it should tell you to set your spawn to the space station

    While the tutorial does help all of the things it teaches you I found out with about 3 minutes of googling before I want to know where I should actually go out into the world to find missions and start actually doing something.

  • @jazzynupexbox6008
    @jazzynupexbox6008 ปีที่แล้ว

    They need to turn those messages on regardless of settings if you are going through the tutorial mission. That setting can be a simple mistake when you don't understand

    im convinced the fact they dont tell you to put on a helmet, and the fact they dont make you set a respawn in bajini, is because they expect you to go take some box delivery mission like every new player will, get out of their ship, and die. then the tutorial continued in the medbay

    I also tried the tutorial today and made the same mistake as you. Thought the whole time what this for a pointless and unhelpful tutorial should be. Okay, now I know better. Thank you very much.

    So, I did the tutorial and now I'm in that station.
    Now what?
    I literally have no idea wtf to do or where to go, I tried to call my ship and leave but there was so much debris outside the hanger door I exploded just trying to squeeze out past all the blown up ships....

    I use autoland a lot actually. When I get to the refinery with a full load of raw quantanium, I'm always worried I'll land too hard and go boom lol. So I use the auto land lol.

    I did the tutorial, and it was messed up, it didn't register me going down the elevator. After that point it was all down hill. Had to go back to the placed I spawned and go down every floor until until it allowed me. to skip that darn thing.

    Thank you for the video. I was trying to do the tutorial and I messed up. The controls feel so atrocious to me and I accidentally went too far while trying to learn the control. Whatever it is for warp drive. Well there’s a timer and I couldn’t get back in time. So I ended up failing the tutorial. Which I l couldn’t find an option to restart or anything. So I was left confused on what I missed or what I was supposed to to do now

    I have severe ADHD and dyslexia and the text frequently disappears before I read half if it. On my screen the text is small, blurry and too compact. Also there is nothing in my journal about the tutorial. I have no way to know what I need to do in order to finish the tutorial. I only did the tutorial because it said, I couldn't get a ship until it was completed and if i skipped the tutorial i wouldn't be able to start the tutorial. At this point, I would literally pay someone to login with my character and finish the tutorial for me. This is a nightmare.

    I noticed you got the bug I've been getting today, only you didn't show and skipped it, lol. But whenever I try to spawn the tutorial ship it never shows me the hangar location. Also, my waypoint for where the ship is doesn't show what hangar either, yet I noticed yours does. I'd had the tutorial fail on me every time I've tried it. First two times there was no food or water. I notice you wake up in armor. I never do, I always wake up in bed naked. Not even a hospital gown. Last time I tried it I couldn't get ship to spawn in hangar even if it did tell me which hangar, nothing there, then game crashes to desktop. CGI has a long ways to go to get this tutorial up to scratch. Pretty unnerving having a pre-alpha tutorial in an alpha status game. You'd think the tutorial would at least be up to alpha standards too. DO THE EVOCATI AND WAVE TESTERS EVEN PLAY THE GAME? Because it seems not.
