  • Is this the solution to dirty windows on these air cleaners? I think so! Aside from looks, this modification will stop dirty oily air from entering your engine via the intake and will keep your pistons clean. This is a huge win for engine performance & longevity!! Theres tons of kits from DK customs for other air filters as well as kits from DK for modding a stock air filter to vent externally. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks for watching and check out some of the links below!

    Curious to see if this actually cuts down on your blow by.... Ive been reading a lot about internal vs external and it seems the carbon build up, all things being equal, is about the same. I was shocked.

      Well i don’t think it will help with blow by. I’ll need the vented dipstick to help with that. But it should help with the intake side at least!

    Dude, you're over thinking it. Just vent each head separately (without T) to atmosphere, no can, the mist is so minimal it's a non-issue. If you want to get fancy add a check valve to each line to maintain any vacuum in the heads. By bonding the to together they can work against each other.

    Say man the one thing I foresee is that there are no vent holes in the catch can, now I don’t necessarily think you need them, but if air is coming out then it needs a place for it to go or it becomes pressurized right? 🤔 maybe a few small holes on the lid of the “fuel filter catch can”? Just my two pesos

But in the beginning I said if I used that fuel filter alone I would drill holes and then at the end of it when I wound up only using it I showed and explained where I drilled holes in the top to vent. You are absolutely right, there is air coming in so there needs to be some sort of vent for the current to continue. And there are holes there

    I fail to comprehend how and why the MoCo, in this day and age, couldn't foresee this issue and ensure it wasn't on the bikes they happily released for sale to an unsuspecting customer base. This is basic engineering failure, and every sold motorcycle should be recalled and repaired at the company's expense. Not good enough, not even close. Kind of glad I didn't outlay my hard-earned for this debacle.
    Shame on you Harley Davidson. Is this what you think of your loyal customers?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Harley had to recycle the oil to the intake due to epa regulations. Just like about 90% of of other motorcycle manufacturers. Some just have slightly better ways of doing it.

    • @zwastiunburzy3688
      @zwastiunburzy3688 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RidinDad But that's my whole point. They already were aware of this issue, they must've done thousands of hours of testing, surely they would've noticed the problem and come up with a solution before selling the bikes to unsuspecting customers. Or is that too much to ask?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t understand what you are wanting from them exactly. We are both on the same page as far as why they had to vented the way they did so the only thing I can see with you arguing about them doing from the factory is just having the lower tolerances for the Pistons and the rings and having the extra balancer in the MA engines causing hire cavitation and more crank case pressure and increased blow by to begin with. In which case yes a somewhat agree with you but the bikes work completely fine. It’s just a matter of what you want to do to your own and for what reasons

    • @zwastiunburzy3688
      @zwastiunburzy3688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RidinDad I understand what you're saying, what I'm trying to say is that the customer is paying a large amount for a premium product. For the price, you would expect (well, I would anyway, I've bought two new Harley's, nowhere near as many as some, but I'm not rich), that this issue would've arisen during testing, wouldn't it? And if it did, why couldn't it have been sorted before releasing the bikes to be sold? Maybe I'm being too fussy? I don't think I am, I realise there's no such thing as a perfect product, and that in the scheme of things a bit of oil ending up on top of your pistons may not be a big deal, but if the issue is as easily dealt with as it appears to be, why couldn't that happen before the point of sale? Do you think I'm being unreasonable in expecting a potentially harmful to the engine issue to be rectified before you buy it, then having to rectify it yourself? If that's the case, and you believe I am asking too much of the MoCo, all I can say to that is you're easily pleased. To buy a Harley in Australia, the prices for a big twin are now around the 30K zone, more than a lot of cars. My first Harley was a new '91 Heritage Softail, and as that bike aged, it started to do the same thing that the new HD's are doing now. Don't you think that they've had plenty of time to think about a solution, and not leave it up to the customer to rectify?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t think you are asking too much I understand what you are talking about. However pretty much all of us don’t know anything about Harleys just kind of understand that you pay to play and that is the par for the course with them. If you want a problem free bike that you don’t have to do anything with you can buy a Honda Goldwing and ride that for 200,000 miles with nothing but scheduled maintenance. It just is what it is, Harley‘s are made a completely different way and that’s why they experienced the troubles that they have. And no, from the factory they can’t do anything about it like the fixes that I’ve been showing because the EPA regulates it and it cannot vent to the atmosphere. That’s the whole issue with us problem.

      Cars have a PCV valve that works in the same manner as the Trask tranny cover with that reed valve. The PCV valve allows gasses that escape the combustion chamber past the piston rings to vent from the crankcase then into the intake so it's environmental friendly. MoCo is doing the same by routing the blow-by gasses back into air cleaner/throttle body. The engine needs to breath, so routing the blow-by back into the crankcase is not good idea. Routing to a vented catch can is a better solution in my opinion.

      The crankcase needs to be vented to allow pressure/blow-by to escape. Routing blow-by gasses back to the tranny cover doesn't allow the positive crankcase pressure to escape the system. A vented catch can is needed.

      I just installed one...........immediately developed an oil leak. after I installed it I road for about 100 miles. Came out the next day and found an oil trail about ten inches long. I thought maybe i pinched the gasket ( because it was so much fun taking it off and on). The oil looked like it was dripping out the exhaust on the left side of the bike. After further investigation, I found it was coming out the CheckM8 filter. Completely gunked up my CVO where it dripped down just under the side cover and went all over the engine bay. I will be reaching out to Trask ( they seem like nice people) maybe they can help me out.

    I just built my own EBS on my stock 114 breather and used 1/4” fuel line from Lowe’s and I recommend using something more pliable if possible. The fuel line is pretty thick and a little difficult to maneuver. I was thinking I needed something thick because of heat but that’s easily avoidable if you route it the way you did.
    Also when you use the stock breather you have to drill holes in the backplate, so be prepared. I’m kinda just throwing it together right now and see what I like and don’t like about it? Spent less than $20 on it so far.
    I’ll eventually put the 636 from DK on the bike with a legitimate EBS and catch can from them as well. This is just a temporary fix.

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I don’t think so. It’s such a minimal difference for the duration of the tuning. The biggest issue with tunes and performance as far as external breather systems go is if you do not have one overtime that build up from the breather Bolt starts to accumulate on the top of your pistons and changes your displacement in compression, obviously by a super small amount but still enough to change your tune and diminish your bikes performance

    How did your set up work...is your rear brake calipar or tire now oil soaked ...???

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. Is kid you’re legitimately curious or you’re just trying super hard to be right about this. But there’s tons of guys running similar setups. There’s some people running hollow hoses to the bottom of the bike with no catch can or filter at all and they have no issues. Even if my setup were to leak oil, which is does not, it wouldn’t get on my rear caliper or tire due to where the filter is.

    • @jerryking1434
      @jerryking1434 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't mean to come across like a smart-ass...but since your not sucking your oil fumes back into your engine ...the oily vapors are still going to collect ..on mine the two rocker cover vents are tee'd together like you but mine runs all the way to the rear wheel thats where the filter/catch can is ...yes ..oily vapor condenses back there and it does drip ...but the way mines plumbed it drips out not on the bike...
      Old truckers used to call this system a road draft tube ..
      Wherever your end of that line winds up ..its going to drip oil ..just like it collected in your air filter ..
      Good luck..👍👍👍

      Where my breather filter is placed when it gets decently full of oil it burns off. It’s incredibly hot right where it’s at and when you’re not moving you can see the oil smoke off of the filter. Plus the filter is not meant to be a set and forget deal. It’s made to be something that semi regularly you remove and wash out/clean

      You can soece the parts (or different applicable parts) from other sites or diy applications like dk customs. But none are specifically designed to work with the trask air cleaner. Currently the reason the price is so high is because the kit comes with a solid adapter back plate. If you watch some more of my videos you’ll see the issues and differences and reasons behind the swap and new offerings from trask

      Almost every bike produced in the past 30ish years vents crankcase mist back in to the intake. It’s an epa regulation issue and not a manufacturer issue. My most recent video talks a lot more about external breathers in general

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a little lost on what you're wanting to happen. The one way valves at the breathers already exist. They only allow excessive pressure to vent out.

    • @RulgertGhostalker
      @RulgertGhostalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RidinDad i am talking aftermarket valves made of a more compliant, yet just as durable, alternate substance ( eg.Viton, Neoprene...something more supple, but i am no expert there. )
      i suppose one could alternately examine the substrate, of the casting, that the valves act upon; and address any issues, found there, under a magnifying loupe...

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t understand why you are wanting that though? There’s nothing wrong with the valves. Very seldom does one of them fail and they are usually very good. The issue is with the tolerance between the rings and the cylinder walls. That’s what builds up the excess of blow by and causes all of the gunk to exit the breather bolts. So I don’t understand why you are wanting different valves when they are doing their job

    • @RulgertGhostalker
      @RulgertGhostalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RidinDad yeah, it's the heat that forces the tolerance... but i am going to try dolling up the umbrella valve seating area, and maybe see if i can fit a little wad of copper choreboy upstream before i mess with an external.

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still don’t understand your issue with the valves. In my opinion they’re doing their job just fine. The issue is before the valves. Blow by, factory tolerances etc.

    Why is it that every Harley sold needs the purchaser to install modifications to make it more acceptable?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m not doing anything to make anything more acceptable. And if you knew exactly what I was talking about or listen to the video the reason that Harley and many other manufacturers vent the crank case pressure back into the intake is due to EPA regulations. And a lot of other brands have owners who do similar mods. And part of the culture and love behind Harley is being able to individualize and personalize your bike right down to every last bolt and hardware piece. That is a huge drive behind people buying the brand. Some people enjoy modifying their bikes to make them different or better than stock form
