    I went with the Trask for my M8 Low rider. I'll admit it's a little pricey, but it is a quality product. Very pleased with the way it looks and is a nice upgrade and peace of mind can't be beat. Only problem I encountered with the install was the guy who put mine together went a little crazy with the thread locker. and the bolts were very stubborn. Take your time and get R done.

    Hello Raider,
    I first installed the Feuling Vented Dipstick. Then I ordered the Trask Transmission Cover. After a heavy installation on a 117 cui Fat Bob. The space is really tight. You fight for every screw!
    When I was done, I backed off the Feuling Dipstick and put in the little cork valve. Let's see how both solutions work together.

    A couple things..i believe the biggest offender is the over positive pressure that is being shoved back into the top of the cylinders, not so much by piston ring but from the banjo bolts..a I noticed Trask finally address my concern (on the product you have) of reed valve cover screws coming loose, and fall in into tank or worse, blocking a port.. Because of that early issue, and the high cost, I made my own vent system on top of the trans cover for just a few dollars, however I would have to vote this product is the better solution over the dipstick vent systems (I'm not if favor of lowering the oil level to prevent oil leakage) ..and I can still use my temp dipstick in the meanwhile

  • @amphibdriver1
    @amphibdriver1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I installed the Fueing oil pump, backing plate, their vented dipstick on my 114- inch build with the Woods Cycle Rame 483 cam, HD Ventilator Extreme air filter, and still had oil blowing out the pod filter with the Trask Check-Mate M8 transmission cover. I drilled two holes in the back of the Harley Ventilator air filter backing plate. I then ran two rubber hoses from each breather bolt and then to a DK Customs catch can. I called the Trask Tech department and was told that I would have to install a 2020 or 2222 Harley oil pump that has an oil seal on it and a Harley backing plate to prevent the oil blow-by. Trask told me that they had installed after-market oil pumps and backing plates without the oil seal on the oil pump and still had oil blow by. But, when they installed the later model Harley oil pump and backing plate they only got a light oil mist into the pod filter that attaches to the Trask Check-M8 cover. If I don't run the RPM's past 3,500 at each gear shift or cruise at 70 MPH for extended periods, I don't get oil blown out of the Trask pod filter, but if I ride at 75 mph for just 30 minutes I will blow out 1.5 ounces of oil. I broke my 114- engine in good too.

    • @RAIDERWORLD
      @RAIDERWORLD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe Feuling just came out with that.

    • @ICEMANINVADER
      @ICEMANINVADER 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you need to install the HD pump and plate. I have the 2020 and immediately installed the vented dipstick before I rode it for more than 500miles. When I decided to change breathers from that elite on he had to the ventilator I had very little residue. HD did a stage 3 install and I had very little carbon or glazing on heads/pistons. I’m still adding the trask cover but if you’re having those problems and already have means of lessening blow by installed then I’d follow trasks advice

    • @amphibdriver1
      @amphibdriver1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ICEMANINVADER --For the price that I paid for the Fueling oil pump and Fueling backing plate plus the Harley labor cost to install both of them, I don't plan on paying the cost for the 2020 Harley oil pump and backing plate plus the HS labor cost all over again. I get the best gas mileage when I cruise at 70 mph on the highway and I don't lose any oil with the Trask vented transmission cover when I plugged the rubber line on it with a small bolt. I can pass slower traffic on the highway up to 90 mph for a short burst of speed and then slow back down to 70 mph and the oil level stays the same.

    • @socalpwt8745

      Probably a bit too late but as I understand it , the S&S pump and plate now has an accommodation for the stock Harley seal.

    hi, so if i install this cover and vent it to the dj customs catch can do you still recommend externally venting at the intake as an extra precaution probably to a filter element since i already have the catch can.
    after both of those there would be no reason for the vented dipstick? as that would just be overkill. i already vented at the transmission cover and externally vented at the intake just to make sure any oil that still gets by doesn't go into the intake.
    thanks!

    • @RAIDERWORLD
      @RAIDERWORLD  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s what I had to do in the end. I was still getting oil through the intake, so I added an external breather. Getting a vented dipstick or vented transmission top cover is still ok, but no need for both. Obviously, I would go with the cheaper option.

      @@RAIDERWORLD I watched this video yesterday and this morning it occurred to me in theory the catch can in conjunction with the m8 check MAY cause the back pressure not desired and you end up re creating the symptom you were trying to avoid? Prior to the Trask piece, was running a Fueling Billet Vented Oil Dipstick, which also worked fine. What I'm curious about is: in addition to the Trask piece, if I were to also ventilate the top end (breather bolts) into a catch can. I've not had any issues with oil in the air cleaner but am curious...can you ventilate both top & bottom ends or over-ventilate or ? Tom M. '21-RGS 114 & '22-FXLRS 117

    Is it necessary to plumb crankcase ventilation back into the intake to provide a vacuum in the crankcase? Doesn't a negative pressure in the crankcase help prevent oil sumping? If that's true, will any other venting configuration (like the Trask cover or routing the OE vent bolts to atmosphere) provide the same benefits?

    • @RAIDERWORLD
      @RAIDERWORLD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only reason Harley has this venting back into the intake, is because of EPA regulations. I’m still running some tests on the Trask and Feuling Dipstick, but both of these systems maintain a vacuum.

I have to check the catch can off the A/C to see if its getting any blow-by still but the bike DOES NOT appear to be sumping as the primary fluid level is right on. However, I have gotten 2 rags full of tranny fluid coming out of the Trask Transmission vent cover over my last 300-500 miles of riding. I wrap a micro fiber rag around the filter element to keep any leaking to a minimum in the ABS area under my side cover.
    While this cover seems to (or should) help release pressure, it also seems to be doing so by taking some tranny fluid with it. Is that normal? And if so, should we just lower the tranny fluid level slightly to reduce that?

      Not taking this thing apart again to address that so will try removing a small amount more oil and changing the filter to a catch can and see if things improve. The catch can I have on the breather works great, checked the other day and no oil, just a little water (1/8” or so in the can).

Should be done in next week or 2. I also installed a heavy duty (300 ml) catch can under the passenger foot rest to help with the mess. The DKCustoms can was not large enough to handle the pressure or amount of oil getting pulled through the line and that has helped big time. No more mess but... still more oil coming out than I am comfortable with and don't like having to run the bike 2/3rds of a quart or so low to reduce it. I would like to install the Trask cover on my new ultra limited, BUT.. when I mentioned doing this to the techs at the dealership they warned me that it could void the warranty.
    I have heard someone will have to bear the burden of proof when blaming this installed part to some kind of failure (whatever that may be) when voiding the warranty during a breakdown, but is it reasonable that Harley would simply void the warranty if they saw this part on my bike?
    I also saw another video that was routing the vented bolts into the same cavity that the reed valve covers on the Trask cover. Outside of the venting process this seems like a way to allow the oil to return to the sump if the venting of excess pressure could include some kind of separation of the oil from the vented gas to eliminate a regular maintenance of filters or catch cans. Is this possible and has anyone approached this idea?

    • @RAIDERWORLD
      @RAIDERWORLD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Harley is still trying to figure that out. Because that top cover has nothing to do with how the transmission functions. It’s just a vent. Something they just forgot to add themselves. Blow by isn't actually what the Harley community thinks it is. Blow-by is a very specific condition when the piston rings, cylinder walls or both are worn down enough that a much larger than normal amount of the exhaust gas from combustion leaks past the rings and into the crank case. That's what blow by actually is.
    The problem these bikes have isn't really blow-by, it's just a normal function of a PCV system. (Positive Crankcase ventilation) however, Harleys, but especially the M8's have way, way WAY too much oil mist coming out of the PCV system and back into the intake.

    Well the topic is great and all, and some decent info here, I just find it a little tacky that you stole about half your video clips from other content creators.... specifically Kevin Baxter from ProTwin Performance..

      You obviously didn’t catch the video mentions, but thanks for watching anyway 👍🏽

      @RAIDER WORLD yeah, I did. Doesn't really make up for all the actual work others had to do to make that content in the first place.

    That fact that Harley has problems with some of their engines they know the problems exist but still charges a premium for their motorcycles then passes the buck on to the customers to fix the problem. That’s a shitty business practice in my opinion.

    • @RAIDERWORLD
      @RAIDERWORLD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. Unfortunately, this is a corporate issue. If you’ve always been a die-hard Harley owner, it’s hard to change to a different company. And Harley knows this.

      I’d rather not take the risk of those screws in the breather backing out or deteriorating and getting sucked through the intake. I’ll spend the extra money for a quality part and peace of mind 👍🏽
