Lewis72 has nothing to do with hand built. The e34 puts you truly one with the car. I've owned 3 of the 4 and have driven the 4th at speed. I just bought another e34....get them while you can. The last of the individual throttle body per cylinder with a cable....
The E60 is all about the engine, which is a stunning track tool. But the E39 wins for me with the all important 3rd pedal and stunning V8 that pulls from so low in the rev range solidly and smoothly to the red line. And it's the best looking classic design ever. No Bangle influence there!
E39 will always stand out for me because it's not to flashy but has plenty of power and retains it's visual appeal as time goes on. There's tons of modding options and can be done tastefully on a very mild budget for a 400hp RWD German car. May not be the most reliable car but also isn't that hard to fix if you know what you're doing.
+BMW Alpina the reason I have the E39 M5 is for that very reason, and combined with normally aspirated V8, best driver involvement. That's something lost in newer cars as clever car management takes over more and more.
People sleepin on that V10 E60, other than reliability it got the best sound. No disrespect to any M5 model. I gotta appreciate every generation of them as we may treat em the same for the next couple decades.
I love the E28, E34, E39 but am just meh about the E60. Sure it's still a fantastic car but it's just too much of a departure from the first 3 generations.

Appearance not makes M5!..In opossite, its last real M5 with huge power and best sound! Wow, I love this video and all 4 generations shown. I used to have an e34 M5 and currently have an e60 m5. I used to have an e28 535 and currently have an e39 540. I've had other bimmer models and still do, but the 5er always seems to be just right for me.
+Ramy Warda I'm no expert, but I think the e34 is easier to work on, less stuff to go wrong. If you get a good e34, meaning the engine, trans and diff are in good health, then it may be a relatively cheap ownership experience. The e39 can get you with vanos, cooling system, engine gaskets and more. The e60 can get you with rod bearings, vanos, SMG pump (unless a manual version available in the US), and god knows what else. My 2008 has about 66k miles and I don't drive it much anymore, but I'm always kind of expecting some expensive thing popping up. I sold the e34 about 15 years ago, but I ran it up to around 148k miles. That car I never worried about sudden mega buck expenses. Just keep the fluids fresh, valves adjusted, basic maintenance and enjoy. The engine is actually pretty simple and robust.

Leon BMW well worst case scenario is 9 years after worst case for e34 so it can't be too terrible. I don't think any are as bad as some e34s.
