      I have a friend who is now selling an E39 M5. He wants to exchange it for a newer M model. Found a pre-redesign 2008 E90 M3. Gave up the E60 M5 because it is unreliable. Do you think the E90 M3 with a manual transmission would be a good replacement for the E39 M5?

    Great review,not an M5 but I've owned my E39 525i Sport 14 years now and apart from a bit of rust it's still as tight as a drum even at 21 years old.

    Another absolutely brilliant film! You really manage to bring out the character of the E39 and how and why it is still relevant today, since most modern cars have lost that pure honest driving experience. Loved the retro intro too.

    Every now and then, an auto maker designs the perfect car - This is that car. The Bruce Lee of vehicles - understated and so underrated. Way ahead of it's time in so many ways. The styling is timeless- man they just nailed it and after the E39, IMO - the M5 styling just steadily went down hill. This car was the pinnacle. Still chasing after one and hoping to own one, before all the gas goes away.

    I also had M5s in 2000, 3 off them, the first one off the showroom floor le Mans blue from Dick Lovett in Bristol, I then swapped it for a Mercedes SL AMG60, what a mistake, I then managed to get an interim M5 in Carbon Black while I waited for my spec’d one. Le Mans Blue with Le Mans blue interior with a towbar, yep I had a car trailer and went into racing, I miss all of them but especially that last one 👍

    Nice video! I have owned a 97' 540i A for about 14 years. I bought it with 130k miles. I spent around 10k in maintenance/repairs to make it a daily driver. In 2015, I purchased a premium Dodge Charger R/T as my daily driver but could not let go of my BMW now at 160k miles. In November 2022, I bought a 2016, low mileage 740i M Sport. Love it. Never thought I would own two BMWs. My 97' 540 drives good, has no rust, great paint, and has that really special feel you mentioned in your video. However, although the transmission has been replaced, it needs most all of the typical refreshes to the running gear and some minor interior and exterior parts. Overall, a considerable investment likely over its market value. Not sure what to do other than drive it monthly, keep it clean, and admire it. Hmm!

    E39 has to be peak BMW 5 Series full stop. The V10 that followed added questionable styling and a level of mechanical complexity and bork factor if the forums are to be believed. This has enough power and involvement without all the unnecessary rubbish like lane-keep assist etc.

    • @OvertakeFilms
      @OvertakeFilms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah! I love that V10, but they do sound worrying and sadly in the UK (I think the rest of Europe too) no manual option!

    • @pdcichosz
      @pdcichosz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might not be competent enough to assess it but aren't the NA V10s still way less complicated than the twin turbo V8 that followed, the one with the turbos between the heads and overheating issues? Questionable styling might have been questionable 19 years ago, one might not like the design but holy crap, this is a 20-years-old design that looks more or less the way current cars do. On the outside, the interior is another story ;)

    • @jaymum23
      @jaymum23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pdcichosz I’m not sure the V10 is less complicated than the turbo V8 (S63). That V8 lacks ITBs and obviously has two less cylinders/pistons/connecting rods. While all M engines have internet complaints of rod bearing issues, the S85’s are most severe.

    It's so hard to choose between getting an E46 to get the feeling of an inline 6 with rack-and-pinion, or an F10 to get the feeling of rack-and-pinion in a V8, albeit twin-turbocharged.

    If you've never had and ran a modern car regularly, you'd love these oldernM cars.
    But once you’ve got used to something designed after 2010, they start to feel very antiquated. You're constantly saying "what was that noise" and you worry about taking them out on bad days. Then there's the lack of creature comforts and modern tech. I had an e46 m3 for 4 years having dailied a 2012 X3 for 4 years prior (and had them both in tandem)
    The m3 felt so old. More often than not, i just couldn't be bothered to move the X3 to get the M3 out of the garage.
    These cars now, if you're buying, are really for occasional use.
    I sold the M3 and got an F83. Totally daily able and i want to use it all the time

    I love and have always loved this car, but this 'best of all time" bandwagon is getting annoying. Five years ago a decent example could be had for less than half of today's asking price and nobody gave a damn because people were not making videos about it with catchy titles. It is still that stupid V8 with idiotic plastic timing chain guides that can ruin your engine. It is too big for the car to fit the rack&pinion and these are 20+ years old thirsty sedans with current Civic Type-R level performance, but without the Japanese reliability... I mean, don't get your hopes too high.

      The rise in values is something that can be seen across the board for anything mildly interesting, where it ends up, who knows!? I certainly yearn for the days when fun cars were more affordable and maybe the rising inflation might dampen the demand a bit. I believe the push towards electric is currently shifting the needle with the most force, as the market realises this is it for the combustion era.

    • @pdcichosz
      @pdcichosz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OvertakeFilms That's true, everything has gotten expensive, but in this case there are other factors at play. If you can buy three generations of M5 for roughly the same amount of money, there must be. While E60/E39 price collision can be somehow explained, one might be still near it's bottom price while the other one already started creeping up, the e34/e39 case is what in my opinion suggests that in the era of lightning-fast information, you can create a demand for anything by hyping it up the right way. And all I remember seeing about the arguably brilliant, even better made and definitely more 'classic' E34 M5 is one short video from Matt Watson, whereas youtube et all is being littered with 'the GOAT M5' materials about the e39.
      Classic car prices have been rising throughout the last 10 or so years, a healthy bit above inflation, I've seen ads trying to convince me to buy into the crowdsourcing schemes for cars, so they've become full-on financial instruments now... I doubt the inflation alone would change anything if not accelerate the price increase, the bubble needs some form economic decline to really burst and put classic cars back into the 'luxurious goods' category. I think you're right about the push towards electric, I'm curious what will happen once the gas statios start to disappear and these investment vehicles need to have their values reassessed as some form of elaborate sculptures. That's why I'm collecting scale models, they are already there for a fraction of a price ;)
