  • Checking Out A Thule Motion XT - XXL
    WARNING WARNING WARNING for the 2020 - 2022 Toyota Highlander the Thule Motion XT - XXL won't quite fit on the factory installed roof rack and cross bars. You must either change the PRD (Power Rear Door) setting of the hatch height OR modification the cargo carrier without one of those changes when you open up the rear of your car it will hit the carrier.
    For cargo carrier modifications (DO AT YOUR OWN RISK, WILL VOID WARRANTY ) you will have to cut the rear slider slots for the tiedown locks. This can be done with a 3/8 inch drill bit and hacksaw blade or Dremel and takes about 10 minutes. Basically the cargo unit sits about 1 inch too far back and when you open the back of the car it will hit the carrier. You will need to extend the rear slots only for the clamps so they can slide back 1 more inch, the front slots have enough range already.

    What kind of cross bars are installed on your vehicle? Are they the OEM? It looks gorgeous, BTW. Thank

      Yes, they are the OEM factory installed cross bars.

    Did you notice massive MPG decrease? Thanks!

      I have not done any analysis on it. My MPG varies so much on my highlander from 13 MPG to 28 MPG averaged on a tank of gas all depending on type of driving and load. From what I read though from others is that you should expect 2 to 3 mpg reduction.

    Does the rear hatch open with no problem or contact to hatch door?

    • @LetsDoThis321
      @LetsDoThis321  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without modification the rear hatch will hit it. The unit needs to move 1 full inch forward. But the rear sliding clamps stop short. I ended up drilling a hole and cutting the slot to the hole I drilled using a hacksaw blade. With the slot cut longer the clamp can move 1 inch further back allowing the cargo carrier to move forward an inch. This is probably NOT something most people can do or will want to do. The SUV rails still fit within the recessed area of the cargo carrier.
      I wish they gave measurements from the clamp to the end of the carrier. Maybe the XL size is shorter in the rear. But you'll probably have to call the manufacturer to see if they have those specifications.

      I tried this and changing the setting from 5 to 4 on PRD and it gives that extra length needed. I could not verify my cargo box was slightly modified to move forward an extra inch. Level 4 gives you right around an inch of extra space between the rear crossbar and rear door wing. The door has 5 feet 4inch of clearance from the ground (most will have to duck to get into the back). Setting 3 gives about 4 inches but the door is only half open at 4 feet 6inches off the ground

    What’s the weight limit? I’ve heard 50 and some say they’ve put 100 pounds

    • @LetsDoThis321
      @LetsDoThis321  ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer is 100 pounds for most vehicles. But, exact cargo weight is not a straight cut answer; you will have to know the load capacity of your roof rack.
      For the Thule Motion XT all sizes have a load capacity of 165 pounds. But a lot rides on the vehicle's crossbar capacity. Also, you must consider the weight of the carrier. The weight of the Thule XXL=51.6 lbs, XL=47 lbs, L=41.2 lbs. The Toyota Highlander 2020 OEM roof rack has a max capacity of 154 pounds in total carrier+cargo. so the luggage weight that can be put in the XXL would be 102.4 lbs and for the other sizes XL=107.0 lbs, and L=112.8 lbs. This would be specifically for the Highlander OEM cross bars.
      If your roof rack can hold over 220lbs then you can use the total weight capacity of the Thule XXL carrier which is 165lbs of cargo.

      @@LetsDoThis321 yes I just purchased the Thule motion XL and it’s going on my 2021 Highlander OEM cross bars so I should be able to get away with little less than 100lbs correct

    • @LetsDoThis321
      @LetsDoThis321  ปีที่แล้ว

       @Kevin 2jZzzz I just went and looked at my cross bars and it shows 77lbs per bar for a total of 154lbs (Another year's model has the 165 pounds) I'll correct my last post for you. That would give the Thule Motion XT XXL 99lbs of cargo. So, Please check your bars to verify maximum weight capacity, should be stamped on the plastic. Also, you will need to adjust the hatch opening PRD in vehicle settings from 5 to 4 so the car's rear door does not open all the way up and hit the cargo box.

      @@LetsDoThis321 appreciate the response brother!
      Have you weighted your cargo ? What’s the max you have put ?

    • @LetsDoThis321
      @LetsDoThis321  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I have not tried to push the limit, but it is easy to do. I've had around 75 pounds in it. The carrier is lightweight and feels a bit flimsy, but they all do for that matter. Just remember to distribute the load evenly: 25% weight in front of the leading cross bar, 25% weight behind rear cross bar and 50% in the middle. I divide it up in 3 groups and strap each group down once all in place.
      You will probably like sumo springs. I added them to my highlander and it gives a more sporty feel to the ride and helps a lot with the sway (right to left wobble) the highlander has: th-cam.com/video/eCklrKzq_4k/w-d-xo.html
      All the stuff I put up there is light weight tent camping things for 5 people. contents: 5 sleeping bags, 5 sleeping pads, a couple tents, few blankets, duffel with coats/jackets. It's been great to get a lot of the light bulky items out of the car especially if you have a bike rack on the hitch. When we don't have bikes I pretty much always use the hitch carrier. It has a capacity of 500 pounds.
