It never occurred to me to make holes with an awl and a crochet a simple border on the backing and then join the two pieces together. So much easier and quicker. I will know for next time!
Aw, been there! I sewed a whole chemise with machine sewing thread once, before I knew thicker sewing thread for hand sewing was a thing. We live and we learn 😁
This was great. Most of the videos I’ve watched about lining a knitted or crochet blanket use a needle and thread or a sewing machine. How you do it makes more sense especially if I want to add an edging.
Of course, if you own one. I think the holes would be a little too close together for thicker yarn (anything over size 2), so I'd still make the holes by hand about 1 cm apart.

What's up with the edges? Are they scalloped? Or at an angle? If scalloped, you can turn the fabric in to the bottom of the scallops. If the blanket is not a rectangle, cut the fabric in the same shape as the blanket and maybe clip some corners if they are too bulky.

Just a simple whip stitch multiple times in the same spot to secure the backing in every corner of the squares. It doesn't have to be complicated. I use knots too, I hide them between the blanket and the backing.
Can you please tell me if I am seeing it correctly? When you make the hole are you placing the hook through both sides of the hole or just through the back hole closest to blanket? I can see you fold the fabric, punch the hole, but it look like the back layer of the fleece the hook is going through. My eyesight is not great up close. Appreciate your help.
I should have used a different color of yarn for this demonstration... I just realized, sorry. You only make the hole through one layer of fabric and push the hook through to what will be the outside of the backing, so the back of the finished blanket. The edge is folded so you crochet over it and will be hidden between the blanket and the backing.

How do you match the number of stitches on the blanket to the backing? I measured mine and had way too many stitches on my backing 😢 (it’s a really big blanket so it’s difficult to count all the stitches)
You crochet the border on the backing with evenly spaced stitches and then you slip stitch all around when joining the two, compensating for the difference in stitch counts. If you have more stitches on the blanket, you make several slip stitches in one border stitch. I show this in the video. You are not supposed to match stitch counts. But if you really want to, it helps to make a row of Sc all around the blanket first, then make the stitches around the lining as small as the Sc stitches on the edge of the blanket.
