Wow! Hearing about your experiences with the crowd and others now I feel like competotive Smash has great issues. Very horrible issues. Players shouldnt have to deal with these problems. Things lile this should have been addressed ages ago.
Crowds can throw bottles and group chant and beat each other up but it's nothing like the problems many grass roots fighting game tournaments have. Crowds in most sports are not close enough and can't real time coach let alone massage a player.
Jacabo Blanco yes however the smash scene isn’t big enough so that the players and fans can be completely separate from each other. At a tournament with hundreds of people, or even 1000 total people, the event is small enough so that people can get up close and personally insult you and harass you and you have no locker room or physical barrier separating you from them
Jacabo Blanco I get your point that it’s natural to be booed and cheered against but zero has received legitimate death threats and people coming up to him at tournaments telling him horrible things. Again to reiterate, that there’s no wall separating professionals from the public at these tournaments like there are at large scale sports games and so it’s easier to be harassed
I agree with filing complaints midset over doing it at the end of the set, cuz would Leffen have complained about UCF not being on if he had won the first time?
Tweek was right. If you’re gonna have a set that bans coaching, the rules should extend to having none of your friends on stage either. Having a friend come on stage and tell you something like, “you can do it” could be just enough for a player to be in a good mindset to win.
Moe's i reas what you said, but you don’t have to be 2 inches from the person for then to hear you. It’s basically the same thing in my opinion and even in the stream of that set, that guys girl disappeared after the match started again. You can’t have everyone play on stage, it’s unrealistic and even then audience doesn’t jump onto the stage until after you win or lose. It’s just extremely menial in most cases but I don’t agree with snitching on someone’s game plan. But being “just enough” makes it sound like we should just be quiet
XxWeed WarriorxX that’s why I didn’t say cheering should be banned. I directly said someone coming ON STAGE (which should be banned already) and giving encouraging words should be banned. The story is that Wrath’s girlfriend came on stage to rub his shoulders and tell him “you can do it”, that should be banned.
Moe's but in the video it wasn’t even on a stage, it was one of this ghetto half circles that you play in, which is one of the reasons why I agree with you, but she didn’t stay there either. So what I’m saying is that there was no way it could be avoided in that scenario other than the crowd being quiet like MVD did.

MOBA's competitive scene get support from Riot and it doesn't have any of these amateuristic problems like the Smash scene. And the reason for Nintendo not supporting is Sakurai's petty insistence that it's a party game
@@AlwaysHungryAlwaysThirsty Yeah, I know they sponsor some tournaments yes, and they also do a lot of behind the scenes stuff to help with logistics. There seems to be a general safety/crowd interference problem. They should mandate raised stages and a large gap between the audience and the stage, with security (even if it's a couple big dudes people will think twice) and provide noise cancelling headphones as a guaranteed option (not required, but available) for competitors. They could also make the first few rows a VIP section for players that have made it into bracket and perhaps a select few who have received clearance directly from the tournament organizers. It is insane to exclude a convicted felon (or any other subjective label) from attending video game tournaments and to ban individual coaches selected by a competitor. Instead, regulate the tournament itself to prevent safety hazards and interference. That way people can compete with a guaranteed level of professionalism and safety. Furthermore, the only way a player or crowd member can be banned and/or kicked from the venue is if they violate and/or continuously violate the established rules as well as the regulations outlined above.
The tweek thing really irked me when it happened because yes, whatever, the crowd is gonna do whatever especially off stream when the set isnt priority without security etc but it was pretty ridiculous that Wrath was getting a massage at all even in between games. The players should not be being touched *at all* during a tournament set especially at an event the size of Dreamhack. The dismissive responses calling Tweek a pussy and claiming top player privilege were certainly something.

A distance of 5 to 10 feet between players and audience should be sufficient. Also, crowd should grow a brain: *As a crowd, you should spectate and cheer the players: Coaching or dissing the players is banned*
I remember at Super Smash Con this past Summer I played M2K in pools and before every set he would turn to the crowd and ask them to not make noise. At first I thought it was strange, almost kinda rude, considering it was me playing and then like my 3 friends watching. In my mind I was like "hey, they should be allowed to cheer for me!" But then later on in pools he had a really close set with someone else and a large crowd gathered. He had lost game 1 and game 2 he was down a bit. The crowd was really loud and obnoxious as they do, and M2K turns back after losing a stock and asks them again to be quiet. It lasted like a minute and then they got loud again. He ended up winning the set, but that whole experience really made me understand and empathize why he asks everyone to be quiet during his set. Its not for the 3 friends, its for the loud crowd being asses 2 feet behind his head
Great video, zero. Like always. But what I love more than anything and what makes me smile every time is you dancing at the end of every video. Love watching you!
The controller controversy reminds me of another set you were talking about recently. Would Leffen have called for a rematch if he'd been the one to win first time around, despite knowing about the issue? It really is down to the tournament organisers for situations like that. They need to be thorough in their preparations. They're also key for avoiding situations involving the crowd. If they keep the audience in check, it should prevent rematches that leave a sour taste, like the set with Marrs.
The most significant part about this is that Zero has one of the most influential voices in the whole community and the more attention he brings to stuff like this the more likely the tournaments will fix the environments
leffen actually plays other fighting games unlike most smash players. in most fighting games button settings are a pretty big thing so I think most of leffens complaints are pretty understandable since he actually has experience with how most fighting games work
awessio wonk I also play a lot of fighting games, I'm actually down to play anything. I don't really see what point you're trying to make though because Melee doesn't have button settings (much like older fighting games), UCF is just small fixes to make things slightly more consistent.
8:23 this reminds of when I was in a school tournament, I was Ness the other guy was Roy. Before the match the Roy player came up to me and fuck you, you stupid ness main. Then during the set every time I loss a stock, the other players would yell fuck ness you better win Roy. I know it's only a school tourney, and it's not as big as a deal as a real tournament, but still I know what zero is talking about and what mars is feeling.
The biggest drama for me will always be that hyuga has banned for so long but a guy tried to murder someone got back into tournaments in two weeks lol. The person forgave him and he still isn't in tournaments
@@thedon6079 plus that scenario seemed sketched still. I honestly believe that it was a potential FWB 3 way until it got out of hand. No way in hell would a smart person bring in a "drunk" individual in their sleeping arrangement.

"I understand what you did is wrong and I don't agree with it but condemning you for your actions for your entire life is no way of living either" Now that's some wisdom
honestly lots of smash players need to do anger management therapy, being in ur mid 20s and throwing ur controller on the ground is unacceptable and dangerous. I think a lot of people forget that throwing the controller around can lead to it breaking and the parts flying into things, this is not ok and should lead to warnings and then bans of tournaments. this level of violence and anger in the community is one of the many reasons why i dont want to go to tournaments
It should have been brought up after leffens 2 button checks, and not the sets closure. And if 1 can argue he didn't find anything majority wrong during his button checks and the games he played before, one can argue the set shouldn't have been replayed
I'd love to know why they let some guy named Yipes trash talk M2k in Winners Finals at Apex 2013 for the entire set. Was there beef between M2K and the guy?
Yipes is a famous MvC2 player and now he did commentary for SFIV and MvC3 and now does commentary for SFV, MvCI, DBFZ and other games. What exactly happened between them?

We'll never know if he was aware UCF wasn't on mideset
Then probably the other guy would've

Tweek was right. If you’re gonna have a set that bans coaching, the rules should extend to having none of your friends on stage either. Having a friend come on stage and tell you something like, “you can do it” could be just enough for a player to be in a good mindset to win.
Moe's so you can’t have fans? I agree with how you can’t be physically next to them, but no cheering? Nah
XxWeed WarriorxX you’re writing that comment because you can’t read what I said
Moe's i reas what you said, but you don’t have to be 2 inches from the person for then to hear you.
So what I’m saying is that there was no way it could be avoided in that scenario other than the crowd being quiet like MVD did.

and then players wonder what the real reason Nintendo doesn’t sponsor a tournament 🤔
True, but I wonder how the community would have developed if the developer and/or publisher had been more involved from the start.
True some people go crying about Nintendo not giving competitive smash more money and then goes on to do shady shit like the stuff mentioned in the video
MOBA's competitive scene get support from Riot and it doesn't have any of these amateuristic problems like the Smash scene. And the reason for Nintendo not supporting is Sakurai's petty insistence that it's a party game
They sponsored a tournament for brawl on release.
@@AlwaysHungryAlwaysThirsty Yeah, I know they sponsor some tournaments yes, and they also do a lot of behind the scenes stuff to help with logistics. Tbh while bigger prize pools would be great for competitors, I think active involvement in the community is the most important kind of support. That's what ultimately shapes the nature of these events. Having more money on the line doesn't prevent toxicity, nor does logistical support.

Oh no wonder i'm so shit!
Man y'all saying a bunch of controller stories, let me in the fun! I used to have many controllers that have either broken down or just haven't worked correctly. My brother's controller was an original, but the cable was ripping so it didn't work anymore. I also had a bootleg orange controller that for some reason stopped working, another bootleg white controller that had the worst Control Stick in history. Now i have 2 controllers, one that works, and one that is impossible to go to the right.

Theres no such thing as a smash normal community. All casuals just play with their group of friends, there's not a community. All parts of the smash community are heavily integrated or involved with the competitive scene.
@@droppedoff6726 Lol no, a lot of people play casually online, message boards, rooms on gaming sites and apps etc. There's a big casual scene for smash much bigger than the competitive scene. Look at the sales numbers then think about how many of those people ever been to an actual smash tournament

@@KingKRool-zs3vq it's a different story now
There seems to be a general safety/crowd interference problem.

“They can knock people up”
I KNEW I wasn't crazy hearing that!

Good on Mars, man. People shouldn't put up with it. Make yourself heard and make a statement instead of letting people do that shit.

This Didn't Age Well
Great video, zero. Like always. But what I love more than anything and what makes me smile every time is you dancing at the end of every video. Love watching you!
Aged not pretty well!
What a hypocrite he is
The controller controversy reminds me of another set you were talking about recently.
I agree that crowd actually can tremendously affect the players
The most significant part about this is that Zero has one of the most influential voices in the whole community and the more attention he brings to stuff like this the more likely the tournaments will fix the environments

leffen actually plays other fighting games unlike most smash players. in most fighting games button settings are a pretty big thing so I think most of leffens complaints are pretty understandable since he actually has experience with how most fighting games work
awessio wonk I also play a lot of fighting games, I'm actually down to play anything. I don't really see what point you're trying to make though because Melee doesn't have button settings (much like older fighting games), UCF is just small fixes to make things slightly more consistent.

honestly lots of smash players need to do anger management therapy, being in ur mid 20s and throwing ur controller on the ground is unacceptable and dangerous. I think a lot of people forget that throwing the controller around can lead to it breaking and the parts flying into things, this is not ok and should lead to warnings and then bans of tournaments. this level of violence and anger in the community is one of the many reasons why i dont want to go to tournaments
