They are pointing to the moon. Look at the moon, not their fingers.

I'm curious why the banners have Chinese rather than Korean characters. A very interesting ceremony, regardless.

Buddhism was introduced to Korea via Chinese monks. At that time, Korean scholars wrote texts in Classical Chinese. Then, King Sejong developed the Korean alphabet Hangul, a simpler and easier alphabet for ordinary citizens. My book of ancestors has all of our names written in Chinese characters (called hanja). You may have noticed that a lot of Koreans have the last name Kim, but there are different clans of Kim’s, as distinguished by how the name is written in hanja. Today, hanja is still used in the Korean language but typically reserved for formal instances. For example, if you read a Korean newspaper, you will see hanja. Given how Buddhism originated in Korea, my guess is that the tradition of using hanja during ceremonies continued to present day

You are right. But just imagine how buddhism spread across Asia thousands of years ago BC. One also has to consider the geographical locations of these regions from the place of origin. Chinese monk Xuanzang took Mahayana Buddhism to China. Chinese Buddhism encorporates the elements of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. From china Buddhism spread to Korea, Japan and Vietnam . I'm also a Buddhist and a follower of Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism was founded by Guru Padmasambhava. Tibetan Buddhism is based on the principle of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. In Thailand, Sri Lanka and Cambodia Hinayana Buddhism is followed that includes the basic levels of Buddhist teachings. Though Tibetan, Chinese and Thai Buddhism are three different practices but are formed on the basis of the same teachings of the Buddha. Buddhism is in general made up of three levels of practices, hinayana, Mahayana and vajrayana. All these three practices include prayers for all sentient beings that include life in itself. In all these three the practioner teaches about how to get enlightened and how to break away from the cycle of suffering ,known as samsara

I wish they would've used some more traditional korean music.. that would really add a lot of depth to the ceremony

It's a consecration service within the Korean Chan Tradition. Chanting is fine as it is.
