For those who aren’t familiar with Buddhism, there are many kinds of Buddhisms and how people choose to practice. What they serve or eat in Buddhist temple cuisine South Korea is different from Thailand, for example. I was surprised green onions, onions, chives, garlic, and something else wasn’t allowed in their cuisine. This was very educational!
I argue that Japan's Zen Buddhist vegetarianism is a happy coincidence in a country that has not much plains to sustain large herd of cattle. Eating meat on the daily is rather recent as far as modern history goes but in Japan it has a date: sometime in 1879 when the Emperor of Japan ate beef. The eating of meat in Japan has practical side to its promotion: prevention of Vitamin B deficiency. Navy curry was Japan's answer to what was once an endemic beri-beri epidemic in the Navy that was resolved only in 1889...
Yes. Buddhist household like me aslo don’t eat garlic, onion, green onions, chives. They are restricted your connect with Deva. Aslo restrictions that to reduce your angry and sexual trigger in your body.

Not to distract from this good content, but if they made an episode on temple food, I wish they would include content on Chinese restaurants that specialize in vegetarian food that tastes like meat. I'm not even slightly vegetarian but I really was very impressed with that experience. They are very, very talented. For people not as familiar- basically on days you will visit the temples you are supposed to not eat meat, so they have an industry that specialized in replication. They have things like beefless stew, twice fried not-pork that are incredible
I was lucky enough to go to a temple in Vietnam. I've never had a more enjoyable meal - its so simple yet well done and delicious, I actually felt really good after, sated but not full.
“Everything is related to food.” Holy shite is that fucking true. Our society, civilization and ways of life’s are completely and utterly surrounded by the cultivation of food and commodities and their own economies
Wow, no garlic or onions, allium vegetables! I didn’t know those were banned. Awesome to bring through so many other subtle natural flavors without those ingredients.
Bear in mind that buddhist temples around the world all have different beliefs around food and other things. Some temples are vegetarian only, some allow meat, some are vegan, and some have more specific rules around food.
What I was taught at the Korean temple where I worship is that those five vegetables are too stimulating and can excite your brain too much for you to be able to meditate calmly. Others say it’s because they are too delicious and will make you greedy for more. We need to calm our instincts if we want to achieve a more peaceful existence. As others have said, there are different types of Buddhist thought and practice. They have different dietary rules depending on their environment. For example, Tibetan Buddhists in general aren’t vegan because very few vegetables grow at that high of an elevation and the bitter cold, so they have to eat animal products to survive. It’s all born out of necessity.
Not spam. I had the good fortune to try some of the best vegetarian food in China when my classmate hosted me back in the 90's. Some of the better restaurants near temples make those impossible burgers look like absolute trash. They make unbelievably realistic stews and hearty dishes that a genuine carnivore struggles to distinguish as meatless. Idk why I just thought of it.

I appreciate her work and respect her beliefs but I'm not sure about the ideas that you're supposed to be hungry soon after eating because it means the food was digested easily and that means it's healthy. You can eat really unhealthy food with simple carbs and be hungry soon after because it's not of substance and has little protein and fat. Not to mention portion size matters a lot.
