The last scene gave me the most intense chills I've ever gotten from a movie, I think. And yes, every scene could easily be a painting. Also, if you haven't seen it already, you should watch Fellini's 8 1/2, as an aspiring director I think it will suit you

I loved this movie. I can rewatch and rewatch it with the same pleasure. So delicate way to suggest thoughts and feelings. So beautifully filmed and played. So much passion, anger and then love hidden beside calm faces and bodies.
I fell in love with this film from the moment it showed me the beauty of some strands of hair on a neck.
Each scene with those two girls interracting is my prefered scene. With the maid, too. It's impossible to choose one.

There are subtle things that the subtitles can't translate. The characters use "vous" (the formal version of "you", almost like calling someone sir or ma'am in English) for the whole movie until the moment at the end when Héloïse calls out to turn around and uses "toi", the informal version "you". It's very intimate and it's unfortunate that the subtitles can't translate that intimacy.

The 'toi' version is actually used twice in the movie...Heloise says it to Marianne when in the kitchen in the first instance ...saying perhaps it was Euridyce who said turn around...retourne toi.

@@PanfluteExpedition_ you seem to be offended at someone not jumping on the bandwagon to adulate a film the way you think it should be, are you sure you're not projecting about ego? I said this is a comment made by people who don't really appreciate cinematography or only on a very shallow level - you proceed to insist it does in fact look like a painting when I never denied that, I'm just not as impressed by that as you are and I refute that this is what 'good' cinematography is or that this is something films should aspire to. Granted it would make more sense in this film than most as painting and the viewpoint of the painter is a literal theme of the movie. The script is heavy-handed and overstated af relying on mehanical motifs (play a piece of music, then play it again at the end = soo emotional, much crying) and some of the actors were miscast (adele haenel is big and heavy and looked ridiculous floating like she's weightless in the apparition scene, also too old for this role, a woman in her 30s would not have been promised in marriage to a count). Use of music was bad - that night scene judging by its visual tone the music is supposed to be eerie, but it's this ultra-compressed annoying modern crap that totally fails. I didn't find it 'amazing to look at' personally. It did have some great editing! (I personally value editing above cinematography). I'll give props to the director for designing the costumes too - some were just really loud and overpowering, like the red and green dresses, the one with the veil is very nice work. To what extent they're historical I've no idea - of all period pieces I've seen, this one is the most curiously lacking in any sort of historical texture. The reviews I read of this very overrated film referred to this aspect as 'minimalist' as though it were a very good and groundbreaking thing

The song the orchestra played in the end was the same song Marianne played for Heloise on the piano earlier on in the film. "it's a favorite of mine. It's not merry, but it is lively. It's about a coming storm"

@@JamesVSCinema Vivaldi's Summer from the 4 seasons. It only made sense to use it at the end to tie in Heloise's memories of Marianne since she had played it for her years before. Celine Sciamma created a Masterpiece. And Noemie and Adele were brilliant. From their interviews they said they did not rehearse together. They just learned their lines and did it. So it was a double collaboration of Marianne and Heloise at the same time Adele and Noemie were creating their own collaboration. Brilliant!

god, i adore all the parallels in this movie, but my favourite has to be the goodbye scene where they basically recreate the orpheus & euridice story with marianne turning around in the end to take one last look at héloïse and then "losing" her in a way. also, if we're talking about favourite scenes in general, definitely héloïse by the bonfire - that one will be etched into my memory for a long time
p.s. that ending scene strongly reminded me of timothée chalamet in "call me by your name" and it made me wonder if you've seen that one - if not, i strongly recommend (gorgeous frames and colours, plus incredible acting and a beautiful story)

@James VS Cinema ~ Celine Sciamma is the one who wrote the screenplay as well as directed it. It took her four years and she wrote every detail into the story including the gazes, breathing, crackling fire, waves crashing, etc., and she intentionally left out music (but for the Bonfire and the ending) because soundtracks tend to force or guide sentiment and feelings and she wanted the viewer to be guided what they could see and hear or not see and hear. Hense the minimal decorations (none on the walls and minimal furnishings) she wants you watching the characters because this is Marianne's memory of a love story. You don't realize all the little nuances until you've seen it a few times and watched their interviews. Particularly Celine Sciamma. It got a 10 standing ovation at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

This movie never ceases to blow me away. Being French, the dialogue moved me on such an intimate level ; I’ll never forget hearing some of these lines for the first time.
Some of my favourite themes weaved into the story are the relationship between an artist and their subject (« When you’re observing me, who do you think I’m observing? »), and the idea of the « poet’s choice » : without ever downplaying the tragedy of Marianne and Héloïse being unable to stay together because of the world they live in, the movie celebrates so beautifully the memory of love, the life that will always persevere in the moments and the art they shared together. (Speaking of, the way art is depicted in this movie is absolutely unparalleled, in my opinion.)
Sciamma has so many interesting things to say about the story, I highly recommend watching and reading her interviews, but this comment about the ending is fantastic ; it 100% reflects my experience watching that scene for the first time. « It’s cinema, and it unveils itself as cinema. It’s a reverse shot between the two characters. And at that point, it’s not about the story anymore. It’s about you being in your seat, her being in her theater seat, and you watching. First you’re watching Héloïse, and then you’re watching Adèle Haenel performing, and then you’re watching a film ending, with room for your own love, because you connect with the journey of emotion. And you think, Oh, it’s sad, but suddenly, she lightens. She smiles. And maybe you reconsider your own past love. »

I recently watched this and really enjoyed it. I agree about the look of the film and I think the limited use of music is to enhance the effect of it when it is used, at the fire and at the ending. It's a film that really stays with you.

I haven’t noticed it in the comments yet but did you recognize that the song they see performed at the end is the same one that Marianne played for Heloise on the harpsichord?! I wonder if Heloise’s emotion we see is due to her reliving that moment or just being overcome with the pure beauty of it.

As someone that only speaks English, it was refreshing to see how despite not being able to understand the dialogue (even though we had subtitles) the emotion and performance could still be felt! I almost forgot about not being able to understand them lol Also if you're looking for outstanding tv I'd suggest The Handmaid's Tale and Killing Eve.

A perfect counter-point to this movie might be "The Draughtman's Contract" from 1982 about a man being commissioned to make several drawings of an estate somewhere in the 18th century. Definitely not from a female perspective it was the breakthrough movie for director Peter Greenaway and has a remarkable score by Michael Nyman.
It's been literally decades since I've seen this movie so I did some digging and found a review from 2016 by Marc Kermode who called it a 'satire of art, sex, death and gardening'. I just might have to double bill these two movies.

  • @TrelauniProductions

That juxtaposition between orpheus and Eurydice mirroring their life. Orpheus an musician/artist, Eurydice his muse, while they danced through the paintings trying to reach out of hell, the mother as hades setting conditions and the two ultimately having to part. The beats were phenomenal and that subtext where you knew what they were really saying with a longing glance. That soft light and enhanced contrast just enough so it pulled in more of that red green on the flat giving it an oil look. The score where if you listen close, most of the music and nat sound were waves crashing and brush strokes where the focus on the songs are important character details. The blonde felt trapped in a music less world, until the painter disrupted. The end symphony playing the song the painter tried to when asked if she’d ever been to one. The cinematography matched perfectly with outstanding performances. It’s definitely a filmmaker’s film.
