  • I was waiting in the parking lot for my wife with the engine off and wipers going "about a minute long". When she was walking to the car I tried to fire up the car but it did not want to start. After jumping the car with some jumper cables it started right up. Next day I went to a local battery expert and they disconnected it to test it out. He told me it was the alternator not the battery. My hunch was the battery was old and should be replaced but I decided not to. So I Purchased a new alternator and uninstalled old one and decided to have it checked out to make sure it was the problem after passing 4 tests at the local parts store I headed home and reinstalled the bugger.
    changed battery and the problem was fixed But thats another story.
    Thanks for watching my video please give me a thumb.

    I just had the EXACT same thing happen on my 03 Camry!!!
    I was getting a battery fault light on my cluster. And when I start the car and pull off the battery lead the car would shut off. So I went to Autozone and shelled out the $212 for a new alternator. I went back home and located all my tools & sockets and got to work.
    Just because you mentioned that you had your Alternator tested, I said, "well let me see what happens". I took the alternator out, took it to Autozone and they said it tested STRONG!!!! Im like WTF?!?
    So I took it back home, put it back in the car, and PRESTO!! No battery light, no cutting off when removing the battery lead, EVERYTHING WAS GOOD!!!
    What the hell man!!!
    Just glad i was able to return the one I bought back to Autozone.
    great video!!!

    Last week my 04' Toy Camry died in the parking lot at my job. I had the car towed to my home where my husband and I successfully replaced the alternator using this simple descriptive video. Thanks for showing us step by step on removing the belt and alternator. I look forward to more of these DIY videos! Thanks again
    BTW, I had to recharge my battery and drive the car around for about 20 min to let the alternator charge, not sure if that was normal but it drives like a champ again!!! Thanks

    Ouch! The only way I can possibly imagine is to go from underneath and to slowly pry it down. This would require a great deal of work, imagination and patience.
    Or you can go to a shop pay some bucks and have the tensioner replaced that way you can do it yourself next time around. That area is too small to weld a piece of metal to it.
    Or option #2 cut the belt off and replace the tensioner yourself.
    I hope you can do it

      iworkforbudlight we just got back from Kauai this morning and my Camry was sitting for three weeks in the Vegas sun. Charged the battery overnight, went to start and it was very sluggish. The battery is showing full charge within ten minutes and is ONLY eight months old so I don’t suspect battery but my question to you sir is was it necessary to pull the alternator out to test can’t that be done while it’s still in the car? I like your video, it gives me much confidence.

    I had the same problem in getting the alternator off as shown in the video. A beveled edge on the threaded insert was engaging into the bracket on the block. I took a screwdriver to pry between the bracket and the alternator while my 14-year-old pulled the alternator out. The prying disengages the beveled edge from bracket allowing the alternator to slide out.
    I had been trying to pry on the threaded insert but that will not work.
    I noticed that my replacement alternator no longer has the insert and the threads are cut directly into the alternator housing.

    I have a 2001 Solara with the original alternator. 155k on the car. I saw some of the other comments. I didn't know it was normal for a Toyota alt to last that long. I wanted to replace it for the hell of it just because it's old. Only thing I've noticed is a slight fluctuation in some of the car's lights which doesn't happen when the engine is off but that's been going on for years. What makes Denso alternators so tough?

    • @MuddyDrivewayProductions
      @MuddyDrivewayProductions  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you so much for watching and commenting on the video. There should not be any fluctuating in the lights if it's been doing that for years it may mean a bad ground someplace. If it's not hurting anything too important I would have to guess and say to leave it be. Try and double check all of your connections.When the engine is off, the lights and accessories will run off of the battery.
      Toyota uses mostly Denso brands. If the vehicle came with Denso I would just stick to that. From my experience dealers and most independent shops go with Denso because it has been proven time and time again.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Much more to come on this Camry. Next thing to do will be front brakes and a valve cover gasket replacement.
      Aloha

      Thanks for the detailed reply. Upon further meter testing with the AC on full, headlights on, radiator fan on, and radio on, the voltage drops from 13.5 to about 12.5/12.8v. I think I'm going to change it out for a re-manufactured Denso sold by Amazon. Since it's only about $110 and will do it myself following your video procedures, I'm figuring why not.

    • @MuddyDrivewayProductions
      @MuddyDrivewayProductions  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yes, Those voltages should be higher. The Alternator should be able to keep up with the accessories turned on. If you have time, once you remove the alternator take it to an Auto Parts store that can test the charging system on it. I went to my store and they did it for free.
      Amazon is one of my favorite places to shop.

      Using a 19mm Socket with 1/2 drive breaker bar
      As for the cost I had it for many years. That one is an expensive Snap On product.

      +Leyla Jolly Hi Leyla, sorry for the late reply.
      No my child is not under the car but behind me. It is a one person job. If you are replacing the belt remember to video or take a picture of the belt pattern so you don't forget. Hope this helps some.
      Please be safe.

    Hey there. What is the term for the part you have to pull down on to relieve tension? Mine snapped off in the process and I now have to replace

    • @MuddyDrivewayProductions
      @MuddyDrivewayProductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mrsjohn098 Sorry for the sad news.
      I believe the part is called a belt tensioner
      To be sure of the correct part please Google 2002 Camry belt tensioner and click on images

      Try and pry it with a pry bar. Press down hard on the belt, it will be hard and slow.

    • @luisbarajas1800

      by which pulley

    • @MuddyDrivewayProductions
      @MuddyDrivewayProductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tensioner pulley will be the only one that will be able to move.
      Once you get the belt off you will have to use the same method.

    Everytime I disconnect the battery I have to drive my car at least 15 miles to reprogram the computer cause if I don't the car will keep shutting off while in park but it didn't look like you had too that's weird

      I had the same problem. Some say to clean the throttle body and that will take care of the problem.

      I missed this comment and had the same problem. There is a video on YT that explains that you should turn the ignition on and off twice. Then, start the car, put the parking brake on and let run for awhile and it will fix the idle issue. It cost me $33 at my mechanic as I freaked out before researching.

      @rabudman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      iworkforbudlight Yes, cleaning the throttle body worked for me the first time, and a few months later I had to disconnect again, I guess it was still clean enough because I had no issues. Go figure. Thanks for the video by the way. I see you made this in '12. I just had Auto Zone test my alternator - 2018 - and they did it while it's still on the car. Was this not possible in '12?

    • @MuddyDrivewayProductions
      @MuddyDrivewayProductions  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Irene Hitemitsu That's really not good. I would try and pry the adjuster to get the belt loose.
      Be careful.

      Hey Irene, mine broke while putting the belt back on. I was just wondering if you were able to get the belt on/off. And if so, what did you use?

    • @Tinineitanaella
      @Tinineitanaella 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pried the tension pulley with a crowbar downward. It took a while. I'd recommend two people for the job:) Happy Holidays

    Hello Mr. Bud I tried to follow your instructions but I couldn't do it by myself. Do you need an extra hand for taking of the belt from the alternator? Because My belt is always stuck into the visible pulley and I just can't take it off. Thanks!

    • @MuddyDrivewayProductions
      @MuddyDrivewayProductions  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Patric Kruiz Hey Patric, sorry for the late reply.
      In the video I had used a long breaker bar to get more leverage to pull the tensioner all the way down. It is pretty tough. No extra hand needed but would help.
      It seems like the tensioner has a shock in it so it will be hard and slow at first but just keep pressing downward till you have the belt loose enough to remove. If you check out 1:04 I pause slightly because of the the shock tension.
      I hope this helps somewhat. Be careful.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
