Repair your bose headphone with a piece of paper

  • I got slept using my headphone...I woke up and only one side was working. I pressed it from the outside and it works....then I opened to take a look.
I found that u can fix it with a paper. Just insert a piece of paper over plastic membrane (the speaker) to make contact with the posterior aspect (where apparently a cable is located).
I hope you can save some money trying this...

This fixed my headphones. Since I didn't have to buy new ones, I took the money I was going to spend on that, and donated it to the Humane Society (of Puerto Rico, since it seems like that's where you are) just now.
    Thanks!

I was a bit confused by what the "membrane" was referring to after seeing this video. Its not the silver flap that is glued to the outside shell that you see as soon as you take off the felt cover. The "membrane" is a very thin piece of plastic that is under the hard plastic shell. It looks like a round cushion that goes around the circumference of the middle of the speaker. In the video, he has wedged a piece of paper through the hard plastic holes, and just touching that thin (and probably fragile) piece of plastic that is underneath. I also see a copper wire over the outside of the membrane, right in the section he put the paper. It appears to go into the main winding for the speaker magnet. I don't know if this has anything to do with it - but it might be a sound or electrical grounding issue that occurs over time, and touching this wire also is necessary... I didn't have any luck wedging that paper in any other area. This part of the headphone is probably very fragile and easy to knock connections loose. I would be extremely careful about how and what you wedge in there.

Genius fix for a very frustrating situation. The English subtitles helped as did the comment from Chris Moler further down in the string. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I was extremely frustrated after spending $300 for these headphones and had them for 1.5 years but only used them a total of maybe 10 hours. I called Bose today 04-13-17, and they told me that they would send me another pair for the discounted price of $225 plus shipping. I literally laughed at the Customer Service Rep. There was no way I was going to throw away more money on another pair of headphones. I am upset that the CSR acted as if they were not aware of this being a common problem. Shame on them!!!

I'm astonished - 8 years on and this post still helps people. I fell asleep with QC25s on and woke up, left ear not working. I tried foam but it wasn't dense enough to keep the pressure on the diaphragm but a bit of folded paper that I Sellotaped in place did the trick. Thank you so much Sebastian Gatica Moris

You're a hero. This method still works with the upgraded design AE2s (which have a different plastic cover under the black cloth (scrim). Just wedge a thin piece of paper into one of the small holes (I picked one of the outer holes) and that side should start working again. Try different holes until you find a winner.

The right channel of my 3 year old QC3s packed up a few days ago. Bose wanted $250AUD to exchange them for a new set (fair enough) but this did the trick for the cost of a piece of paper. Much appreciated!

Mine starting buzzing in one ear , the battery side. Having spoke to Bose, and them wanting to charge me £80 for a replacement pair or £220 for QC25's I decided to give this a go - and boy did it work - they are now perfect again.
Thanks so much for this simple but very effective fix.

OMG. Had mine almost a year to the day. Thought what would I lose trying this solution. Tried with paper but it was too flimsy so switched to thin piece of card. Absolutely perfect. Just connects the foil surround and the speaker drum and must do something like complete the circuit. Amazing. Thanks so much

This worked for my QC35 (no sound on the left side). After peeling off the cover, I turned on music on the speakers at 100%, then used a screwdriver pressing down on the plastic membrane to out where the key spot is. When you hit that key spot, music should come back on that left speaker. MY key spot is on the top inner side. I folded a piece paper and slot it in adding a little pressure until I can hear the sound come back. I made sure to not crack the plastic or create too much dissonance from what used to be. I did shake it a little to make sure the paper was good and firm
Just to note that the sound might feel a little obstructed but nothing too obvious.
Thanks for the hack. This saved me 300$.

Sebastian, I started my day sad with my left one doing static and finally just dying... it really looked like a connector issue or cable...was about to order a new cable and I decided to have a browse around...and bump into this video...almost laughed and thought that couldn’t be related to the connection issue I had...but and 2mn and a paper strip later, I was a happy camper! You made my day!

I also tried this and managed to get my QC15's working again. For those who are still trying, the membrane is the bubbly thing behind the large chunk of plastic - Use a pencil (that is not sharp) to lightly press it - If you press it all the way down, it does not work - There is an in-between. Cheers

I am so glad I found this video. Mine broke exactly the same way, and I was highly surprised to find nobody could repair them, not even Bose themselves. After unscrewing the earphone and looking around for loose connections and measuring wattage etc. I had given up. This trick fixed it right away, though paper was too flimsy, so I used some thicker foam. Thanks a lot for sharing. You saved me a lot of money.

Unfortunately this was only a solution for a short time. Now they keep losing sound if I move my head while wearing them, and I have to tap on the right ear cup. Annoying, because it makes them all but unusable unless I'm sitting perfectly still.

  • @strangecodes

totally worked for me. I used a piece of card, and then taped it down, with the piece of card making contract with the plastic membrane. Of course be careful when you do this: you don't want to puncture the membrane or it's new headphone time.
My issue is the the right side noise cancelling feature and the bass response was clicking in and out. The membrane was moving and not held in place against the outside of the headphone (which make it work).
When i tried this, put the felt cover back on and clicked back in the headphone's cushions - et voila. Solved.
    THANKYOU so much Sebastian! :-)

Sounds to me that you have an intermittent driver - meaning that the wire that takes the electrical signal from the driver's stationary terminal to the swinging voice coil has partially broken. Depressing the membrane temporarily "closes" the partial break of the signal wire and the driver resumes playing. I haven't seen the driver up close yet so I don't know if it is a tinsel wire (multiple strands of foil braided with polyester or cotton fibers for damping and fatigue) or a magnet wire (either solid copper or CCAW (copper clad aluminum wire). It is likely the latter, aluminum does not like dynamic loads as it ages and breaks eventually. Either way, once it is intermittent, it will only take so many stress reversal cycles before it fully breaks. If I had closeup pictures I could give you a more definite diagnostic.

  • @pamaramb
    @pamaramb 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In English: there's a thin, transparent plastic sheet that has to be in contact with the back of the headphone for it to work properly. You will find it behind the hard plastic cover which is below the cushion and the felt cover. Both the cushion and the felt can be removed easily (see video.)
Any sufficiently thick sheet of paper could be used as a wedge to push the transparent membrane back. Insert it through one of the holes in the hard plastic cap as you see in the video.

I tried the paper. It didn't work. Then, a little exasperated about the constant clicking in my ear (the sound in the right ear didn't go away, but it lost presence) i realised something... my girlfriend's long, thing black hair clip. I stuck it from one end of the black grate to the other. The ear cup inside doesn't bounce around anymore. Et voila!
An upgraded paper trick, with more support for the issue.
If that worked for you too, let me know.
BTW as mentioned, i used the paper before and it didn't work.
The metal hair straight hair clip did, and it was the perfect size for the job.
Issue with lack of prescence in the earcup, or a cut out in sound, seeems to be totally always about that little plastic membrane not sticking close to the back side of the earcup.
Been testing this method for 10 minutes now, works a charm. No more issue! No clicking, sound is panned fine, accoustic noise cancelling is working fine :)

I was so bummed, the right speaker kept cutting out, I could tip it or turn my head and it would cut in and out. Then I put a piece of paper in the space between the plastic and the membrane, BOOM it works again, this is awesome. Love the internet.

I managed to fix my by poking the membrane back with a piece of paper. I'm so happy that I have my headphones again. Now I tried this method on my brother's bose and it did not work. I inserted a piece of paper like the video mentioned, but the sound on the left side is still out. Could someone help me? Does it matter how thick the paper it? Which side did you guys insert the paper? top or bottom?
