now this type of video is the exact reason I'm subscribed to this channel. weird obscure sega games I didnct know exist that have almost zero coverage. thanks for the vid
I remember seeing this in a few blink and you miss it articles in the import sections of a couple of game mags way back when. I recall wanting to get my hands on it for my small selection of car ride and bathroom pick up and play GB and GG games. A few years later when I got to play it on an emulator, I was glad I never pulled the trigger on the purchase.
Heh, I actually got done recording footage of this a few days ago for an upcoming retrospective. It's an alright game, though interesting how they adapted PD to a 8-bit system.
The fact that Sega was simultaneously developing Panzer Dragoon games on 8-bit and 32-bit hardware is emblematic of how far and how fast video game technology was developing in the 1990s, and of the kinds of problems that could create for a company like Sega who was trying to support such vastly different user bases. I don't blame them for this being a bit of a cash-in... this is one of those games where the fact that it exists at all is such a miracle that i don't know that it's fair to complain that it wasn't also amazing. And at least it's better than the Panzer Dragoon "anime". (Woof.)
I know you're not a movie channel, but I just have to recommend the Panzer Dragoon animated movie 😁 it is in my opinion, so bad it's good. And itd be a fun video to see you do a review of. Just so you can get the collection of Panzer Dragoon media reviews up
It's not really related, but there was actually a good Crimson Dragoon game on Windows phones. An IP which is a clone Panzer Dragoon. Its a side scroller but gives similar gameplay.
I remember getting home with the Saturn game, and immediately calling my friend, to see the CG intro. It was amazing at the time, and the orchestrated soundtrack blew our minds!! Makes sense that, basically, a Master System version, wouldn't really compare.
This game changed my life as a kid. Panzer Dragoon Zwei was the game I broke out to show the PS owning friends what the Saturn could do in the right hands.
Just found your channel today and subscribed. Good work, love learning about new titles and Sega is my favorite video game company all-time. I still am super sad at what happened to the Dreamcast...such a shame.
Now just imagine if this game had been a side scrolling shooter with lock-on mechanics, infused with text boxes and anime characters between the stages to tell a story. Man, it could have been SO good!
Game is very impressive technically speaking in my opinion. I don't recall seeing animated sprites that take so much space on screen on the console. 99% of the games actually removed most of the visuals elements to display bosses, here you keep the moving foreground, the dragon sprites as well as all the shot sprites. This game moves quite a lot of sprites at once for the console, while staying smooth and with minimal flickering.
Maybe, Crimson Dragon didn't exactly light up the sales charts (though I would still love to play it on another console, the only Xbox product I own is a 360).
Great review. This was fun for a quick kill. Its one of the only games where I had a deathless run on it the first time I played it. It definately lost alot in the port.
I think Panzer Dragoon would've worked like a charm on the 32X being done like a Space Harrier/After Burner clone, which makes sense being the original an upgrade from that formula.
This looks more like an early fan proof-of-concept type thing than a commercial product, though even those are typically more impressive and tend to use the target hardware in unique ways previously not thought possible.
Cool video, loved it. I just have to keep saying it, but you should totally do a video on "Hellslave" the upcoming Saturn homebrew by XL2. He is such a good developer and his work needs to be seen and released, please make a long in depth video on this legend. Thanks Sega Lord X. Sorry for repeating myself so much, but I always believed that persistence is key.
Cool, on which video? I was wanting to see you do an in depth video on it, I really want this game to happen as it is literally the game I have been most looking forward to this year, as it really raised my hopes during the lock downs as I have literally been playing sega saturn and Nintendo 64 all the time and I have been looking for new games to get and play for my systems.
Wow, nice video, so cool to know there was a version of this game for the GG. Obviously it is much simpler than its Saturn version, it could better in some aspects like the ones you mentioned, maybe, but it actually looks like a fun game :)
IDK, I was never a fan of the hardware. That's why I have a LYNX. .... :-) .... .. And a substantial collection along with a "Would LIKE" list? ... ;-D
Always wanted to try this version..but by the time it was released, I had moved on from the GG. Never bothered to emulate it, however. Maybe it was for the best with the compromises made.
I researched this game, and see that it selling for close to $1000, or even $1000 because of it's rare value for the original Japanese version. I think I got a reproduction that I bought, and I was going to check the value of it at Game Stop.
Wow! I didn’t even kno’ this existed! I was a huge fan of the original two games on SATURN but this looks…I dunno’. “Vanilla” is a good description as you put it. I think there was something to be said about old games on handhelds and portables. Back in the late 80’s (and to a lesser extent the 90’s) kids were so desperate to have video games “on the go” we just accepted what we had offered to us. It’s the sole reason us 80’s babies even gave companies like TIGER ELECTRONICS a chance because those handhelds were arguably the worst! By comparison this PANZER DRAGOON : LITE looks like a revelation! LOL!!!
They've should done a pet simulator; like train these cute versions of Dragons, with some mini games and maybe an accessory to connect the GG with the Saturn, to unlock new skins, more mini games or new levels.
Hi SLX! I would love to see a video on Legend of Illusion (especially the Master System version). Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion both get a lot of love... But Legend seems less well known
The way the enemies explode before the bullet even reaches them is some of the laziest most pathetic shit I’ve seen. The game has the simplest visuals that they could possibly get away with and they couldn’t even take the time to get the bullets right? Man, screw these devs.
I think I played this for a minute via emulation... definitely went in thinking 'GG panzer dragoon, huh?' I remember it being an okay game, nothing super spectacular but points for trying to put all that on the game gear.
Ouch ... I'm moderately impressed by the 8-bit renditions of the Golia Hunter and the Prototype Dragon, but otherwise this is a pale shadow of one of the best art styles in video game history (and the Heresy Dragon without a rider? Heresy indeed ...).
SegaLordX, way to stay fresh by reviewing this obscure game.
They could/should have made a really high quality sidescrolling shooter using the Panzer Dragoon IP, instead...
honestly that was what I was expecting (except maybe bad)
now this type of video is the exact reason I'm subscribed to this channel. weird obscure sega games I didnct know exist that have almost zero coverage. thanks for the vid
"A barebones package of simplicity" is such a good book title.
I remember seeing this in a few blink and you miss it articles in the import sections of a couple of game mags way back when. I recall wanting to get my hands on it for my small selection of car ride and bathroom pick up and play GB and GG games. So it weird it exists, it's like finding out there's a Gameboy version of Splatoon
Makes me kind of think of the Gameboy Color version of Perfect Dark.
I happen to own Panzer Dragoon for Tiger R-Zone. I forgot until I saw this video.
It is the best reason to own an R-Zone. Awesome LCD game. Probably more fun than this, to be honest.
Always interesting to see official demakes like this.
Loved my game gear
Whaaat? I didn't know this existed..
Me neither.🤯
Same
@@javgoblin and of course it's ultra rare and expensive. Only 3 of them on eBay right now it looks like....
Love my game gear now I’ve added an official
mcwill screen and changed the shell.
Dang looks like there was still 2mb free on the cart lol
The giant boss sprites are rather impressive
Eh, not really, using background layers/joining smaller sprites together to make large enemies was pretty commonplace in the 8 bit era.
Agreed. There was definitely potential for something great here =)
Man, that SEGA sound…I know there was the FM module (for the SMS), but give me NES music any day.
That's... crazy. This one is certainly news to me. Thanks, X, for another dose of retro zaniness.
Heh, I actually got done recording footage of this a few days ago for an upcoming retrospective. It's an alright game, though interesting how they adapted PD to a 8-bit system.

Sega had been making 8-bit Space Harrier games for 10 years at that point. I'd say it's pretty fair to criticize a half assed release.
That yellow Game Gear is badass! Great video!
I got a little gachapon figure of the red one from this game I got from my Japanese pen pal back in the '90s
You may be able to sell it and buy a car.
I know you're not a movie channel, but I just have to recommend the Panzer Dragoon animated movie 😁 it is in my opinion, so bad it's good. And itd be a fun video to see you do a review of. Just so you can get the collection of Panzer Dragoon media reviews up

@@JoshuaJacobs83 do it you'll love it 😁
The Dragon looks so cute & chunky 🥰
This game on the Saturn was so therapeutic in every way you can imagine.
It's not really related, but there was actually a good Crimson Dragoon game on Windows phones. An IP which is a clone Panzer Dragoon. Its a side scroller but gives similar gameplay.
if you were able to switch the view on the fly during the entire game like it does during the boss fights, they might have had a great 8bit version
I’m actually impressed by how good this looks, all things considered.
Impressive 3D effects for the system, but it definitely resembles Space Harrier more than Panzer Dragoon.
I just love the GameGear. My first handheld :)
I remember getting home with the Saturn game, and immediately calling my friend, to see the CG intro. It was amazing at the time, and the orchestrated soundtrack blew our minds!! Makes sense that, basically, a Master System version, wouldn't really compare.

I’ve always wanted to dive more into this series, and I had no idea about the handheld so now I can’t wait to learn about it
I've played this before. I enjoyed it for what it was.
That yellow GG is sweet

I hope that one day, a new Panzer Dragoon game will be released.
Since Streets of Rage 4 came out, there is a possibility of a new Panzer Dragoon.
Maybe, Crimson Dragon didn't exactly light up the sales charts (though I would still love to play it on another console, the only Xbox product I own is a 360).

Sega Lord X = Honest Abe
SegaLordx este juego debió salir en el sega cd32x y Dreamcast wowwwww
Saludos cordiales desde Michoacán México sega forever
sonic1 on the game gear had the spin dash just like the master system version
I'd be interested in hearing about Saturn games that have been de-maked for the Genesis/Mega Drive, if these games exist.
There is Virtua Fighter 2.
@@Hektols Anything else but Virtua Fighter 2.
I'm just surprised that this was actually released during that brief window between the Saturn's life and the Game Gear's death.
Good review of a kind of half-assed game
My cousin used to bring his GameGear to our house on the weekends (he lived close by so used to hang)
Tea, Toast and Seeeegaaaaa ❤ good times
Im english but you sound super english.tea toast and game gear 😆

honestly ? i am impressed , i don't think even an NES can do such a game, those bosses are huge for such a simple device.
Game Gear is a handheld Master System, so its more powerful than the NES.
I just looked at the eBay prices for this. 🤣
Ah crazy. I just made a repro of this game for my GameGear today.
Be great to make a repro of this for the genesis. Shouldn’t be too hard.
Love the batman outro. Sick song/game!

HOLY CRAP YOUR GAMEGEAR IS BEAUTIFUL
I think you nailed it with this review. I just fired up my flash cart, and oof, it's about as flavorful as plain white bread.

I own this. It's surprisingly fun, despite the limited tech behind it.
Hmmm… so what handheld games are good?
This game is simple, but i really do enjoy it. I'm glad you covered it.

Nah, I love that thing. Screen mod, rechargeable batteries and new lens really make a difference.

What happened to you're 4k videos they looked so good on the TV where the video files just too big to justify uploading
I had a backlog of old videos I saved up for vacation. 4K vids should return with new content next month.
@@SegaLordX Thx for the quick response respect your grind
Now that I think about it, I’m surprised NiGHTS never got a Game Gear title, considering it’s the best-selling SEGA Saturn game.
Wish never heard of this
THIS EXISTS?
Hi SLX have you reviewed Panzer Dragoon Orta. I never got to play it sadly 😢
I had a Game Gear as a kid & was stuck playing Sonic 2 (meh), ports of MK2 & Berenstain Bears when I could've been playing this or GG Shinobi??
Amazing review man! This game looks pretty neat, regardless of how Bare bones it is.

Is it me, or the music at 3:13 sounds like the Mortal Kombat theme?
If you plan on covering a slate of Sega's Japan-only portable stuff, is Sylvan Tale coming up?
I love the Yellow Game Gear.
This Sega game gear should have released in the USA in the first place. 😀👍🎮
Cudos for the attempt.
I wonder how panzer dragoon wouldlook if it was released on mega drive.
Almost 100k 🥰
It looks ambitious. But yeah I can see this as a curiosity.
I only realised now that Dragoon thing is flying around in your intro..
Can you tell I haven't played it? :P
Awesomeness video could you do sonic shuffle please thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I own a game gear and I didn't know this game even exist.. Wow

"... a pretender? ... a CLONE of a better game.. " .. . ..Exactly why I NEVER got into "game gear" at all.
