ACD Drums are an Austrian company that manufacture direct drive kick and hi hat pedals. Vlad is sponsored by them. He also uses a remote hi hat that sits in front of the traditional hi hat that he usually uses to keep time and keep the song moving during slower parts of songs. He also rolls his stick a lot to produce the ghost notes and that could be why the high elbow. Fun fact is that he is actually a classically trained pianist and taught himself the drums to join Jinjer
Love, love, love Jinjer! And I actually learned some stuff about drums, so thanks! You should check out a band called Leprous-and their drummer Baard Kolstad’s drum playthrough of “The Sky Is Red”. They’re a Norwegian prog metal/rock band, and Baard is fantastic!
The live version of Vortex must not have been a Napalm Records release, they do not block any of the content of the bands they rep. Napalm believes in the positive use of reactors to help in promoting their artists.
Fascinating. The first song I ever heard from Jinjer (like a lot of people) was Pisces. I immediately thought of Rush. Now I know why! Seeing these folks for the second time live in a couple weeks in Milwaukee. I am STOKED!
Aw dude! I would murder to see that Milwaukee show! Only 3 shows in America this year, and you're seeing 2 of em? I'm jelly! Hardly anyone says it, but like you I heard Rush right away in Jinjer. That's a shame the live capture caught a block from LiveNation. I can only hope you enjoyed the glorious thru-composedness of the thing!! I normally recommend Eugene's bass playthrough vid for a follow-up to the Vortex OMV - it's an absolute #MasterClass. In the mics those toms probably sound much better. I'm not a fan of the tape either. It drove me to find my own solution that I don't see a lot. I would cut old drum heads into a ring and then also cut the metal hoop off (Remo so it would be the poly hoop if it is a different brand and not metal) and then put it under the new head and tune it the normal way. it's a little closer to the effect of adding mass to the head than it is choking the sound off. I'm looking to do some experiments this summer using magnets. Guitarists often talk about pickup height and how if the pickups are too close to the strings their sustain goes away because logically the magnet is restricting the movement of the string. So I want to try putting a washer or metal dot on a drum head and seeing what kind of head control I can get from it. There are several really good drum playthroughs from Vlad but my favorite is his Mediator playthrough. Everything you see here just 100 times more of it.
If you want to react to more drum vids, might I recommedn Meshuggah - Clockworks... there is a studio drum cam on TH-cam and that man Tomas Haake is a BEAST
The tape is likely more for dampening than tuning....one way to get a drier sound. Vlad is a classically trained piano player....how he arranges/writes his drum parts, how he plays the kit and his sonic tone (drier sounds) makes perfect sense, given his classically training on piano. All the textures, cymbal dynamics and ghost notes helps give a bigger sound to the band in a tasteful way. Vlad has mentioned he pretty much built his kit around his main cymbal....a 22" Zildjian K Custom Special Dry Crash. It's a beast of a cymbal...dry, dark, yet explosively powerful. It's the big cymbal out front, just left of center. He has a 21" size of the same crash on the right side. His current piccolo snare (firecracker) is 10" diameter x 6" deep and is cranked even higher than in this video. Vlad is one of my favorite drummers. FYI, China cymbals are not so much turned inside-out...it's just that in modern drumming nearly everyone mounts China cymbals upside down. Billy Cobham popularized mounting China cymbals this way back in the late 60s and early 70s and now I can't think of a single drummer in rock or jazz that doesn't mount a China cymbal upside down. Less easy to crack and more explosive for sure. Cheers. 🥁
He writes, composes and arranges most of the newer music with Roman and Eugene. Especially Roman, who actually does quite a lot of studio work in general for this band.
They say Vlad wrote a lot of the melodies, and perhaps of the guitar parts on Wallflowers. It's said the new album will feature Roman more, that it's supposed to be more guitar-forward. I wonder if we're gonna hear some leads from him...
Just found your channel. I've met Jinjer a couple of times at shows. They are the coolest down to earth people. Vlad is a beast and extremely humble. I have a signed tom head from him.
Thanks for doing this deep dive. I'm not a drummer (at all, lol), but here goes my 'observations'. FEEL FREE TO LAUGH at me, everyone else does. Kudos for the Ruth Underwood mention. I love Ruth. To me she was at the core of the Zappa band. I'd say Bill Bruford did some awesome intricate pitched percussion as well.
Great reaction and analysis, thanks! Bassist here, but I enjoy breaking down and learning all the instruments in great songs. All the Jinjer playthrough videos are amazing. And all their songs are extremely challenging (and FUN!) to play. So much so that I haven't tried yet to learn any of the guitar or drum parts--I'm still busy with Eugene's crazy bass parts! I spent most of the last two days STARTING to learn Call Me a Symbol on bass. It's nuts. Someone should do "bass player reacts" videos for Jinjer. I could go on and on about how weird Eugene's playing is! Like you, I'm reminded of Rush when I hear Jinjer. The Professor did have a similar way of approaching his compositions. That exacting intention he had, each riff and fill unique within the song. (Interesting that they're called "drum fills"--designed to fill space. Neil did it so well for a trio, and Vlad's role is much the same.) Hardly ever the same fill twice in one song. Extreme dynamic range and range of expression. Use of unusual colors. I do love the way Vlad uses the bells. Often one right after the other, ding ding, often in combination with other small cymbals or the bells of his rides. Usually stuck in little pauses in the music, or to accentuate a guitar/bass phrase. Dmitriy Kim did a little of the same thing. I wonder if Vlad picked up the idea from him. And those ghosts on the snare! Lots of drummers use them, but they're kinda a trademark for Vlad. They're everywhere throughout their songs. That high elbow on the snare hand makes the angle look more efficient--he does it with both hands. Vlad could be on Scooby-Doo, he looks like he's seen a g-g-g-ghost! Someone said after Jinjer plays the venue is haunted, there are so many 👻👻👻.

I would be really interested in your take on the drummer from slaughter to prevail. While they are mostly known for the intense harsh vocals from their lead singer, I have always been impressed by how clean and precise the drummer is. He also has a lot of drum “one takes” for their songs.
11:56 he changes his live setup a fair bit. Sometimes he uses two big floor toms, sometimes only one. Sometimes he sets up a hat very low near the bass drum for washes and sometimes its not there at all. I have seen times where he had a snare and two piccolo snares, sometimes just a snare and one piccolo. The common threads always seem to be lots of cymbals very low, no rack toms whatsoever and at least two snare drums. I think he just sets it up however he feels comfortable that day. Its real nuts when you know what his recording rig was like for the albums he has been on so far. I recall quite a few mics on the snare and also a ProCo Rat pedal being used on one of the snare bottom mics if I am not mistaken.
Indeed, Vlad does ghost notes a lot because there is only one guitarist now and he has space to fill in the mix, he said as much in one of the very few interviews he has done.
I'd actually love to see you do drum playthrough reactions. Maybe split up like this (I don't see the Vortex video up yet), or maybe as double-headers with the song first and the drums second? Vlad has playthroughs of most of their songs, even some done as full music videos in their own right. "Copycat" would be a great song for this, as the drum part is incredible! There's a cymbal pattern that's repeated as sort of a mini-chorus in drums only that's just mesmerizing, and it's a really cool video! IIRC, the song video is a performance-style music video. Also... bruh. FYI, Neil Peart's last name sounds like "ear".
If you like the drum playthroughs, you should checkout Alex Bent from Trivium. Id recommend Beyond Oblivion ( Trivium - "Beyond Oblivion" (Alex Bent Drum Playthrough) ) or Betrayer (similar title). They are from around 6 years ago. He also recently uploaded a full show and the individual clips of each song. They are shot from behind only and sound isn't quite as good which is why I recommend the other two, even if they are a bit older. But they will give you more to choose from and more recent.
Man, you're ready to start Babymetal! A japanese Kawaii Metal Band, that is amazing... Most people that reacts to them in yt starts with the song "gimme chocolate", but i recomend "Road of Resistence live at legend 1997 Apocalipse"
That was interesting and educational, even to a non-drummer like me. Add me to the list of those who would love to see you analyze the drum work of Nightwish's Kai Hahto. The Army's nickname for him is "The Human Metronome". And, much as I would love to see you analyze a Nightwish drum cam, the best video to see what Hahto can do is to watch the video where he is performing Wintersun's "Sons of Winter and Stars." Heck, I wouldn't mind if you did a video from a Nightwish concert also.
You gotta do the live rehearsals at sonic pump performance of Sons Of Winter And Stars - Wintersun. This is an epic journey of a song. You have no idea what to expect and might struggle to hang on. It’ll be fun!
Excellent explanations! Very interesting! By the way, Neil's last name is pronounced Peert (Like the word peer, not per) even though it is spelled Peart.... Just FYI... A lot of people are pretty sensitive about that... I suppose I am too... LOL
Sweet detailed breakdown! Quick question: Have you already seen Chad Smith playing the song The Kill, which he hadn't heard before, on the Drumeo channel? The groove he has is insane. :)
Ok I'm gonna put this on your radar now... El Estepario Siberiano. Is a mad man on drums to say the least. He has a ton of TH-cam shorts as well as full covers of The Weekend, OutKast, Linkin Park. He also has a full compilation of his one handed shorts. Yes you read that correctly. I suggest keeping your sticks and drum kit at a safe distance as most drummers who react to him break their sticks and burn their kits. Just fair warning. 😂
Great breakdown & analysis. Cool. You should check out El Estepario Siberiano's drum covers. He is undeniably the best drummer in the the world. This will blow your mind. Here are 3 samples of amazing covers on his channel: Everybody Dance Now th-cam.com/video/l7SxjyK5nW8/w-d-xo.html; Beast and the Harlot th-cam.com/video/oi3SHt303iI/w-d-xo.html; Blinding Lights th-cam.com/video/22-gbE-tjr0/w-d-xo.html His one-handed covers are also otherworldly. I've seen it already about a dozen times. And I've attended Danny's drum clinics back in the day. I couldn't do an authentic reaction since I've been listening to the guy for decades.
Too bad about the live version with the whole band, that would have been fun to watch! For more prog metal drumming, check out Bleed by Meshuggah. There is a drum cam version. Apparently they write their songs on the computer in 4/4, though that is not at all apparent when you listen to them if you don't know it. This song took Tomas Haake half a year to learn how to play.
Gotta do his Mediator, Dead Hands Feel No Pain, As I Boil Ice, Copycat, Ape, and Under the Dome playthroughs. Genius

Drummers seem to like wearing wrestling shoes a lot. Makes sense, gotta feel the pedals
Excellent explanations! Very interesting!
By the way, Neil's last name is pronounced Peert (Like the word peer, not per) even though it is spelled Peart.... Just FYI... A lot of people are pretty sensitive about that... I suppose I am too... LOL
It's weird. I know HOW to say his name, but I find myself not actually saying it correctly when the time comes.
@@teckreactions It took me a while to adjust, as well. Just think Neil has no "peer" and he doesn't use Pert shampoo as a way to remember, maybe? LOL
The official Vortex video is well worth watching, too!
Sweet detailed breakdown! Quick question: Have you already seen Chad Smith playing the song The Kill, which he hadn't heard before, on the Drumeo channel? The groove he has is insane. :)
I have!
If were going drum playthroughs, and I've already mentioned it, matt griener zjildian live.
If you haven't seen them yet, you should really check out Polyphia. Their drummer is awesome, as well as the 3 guitarist that make up the group.
Love Polyphia!
I’ve seen all his stuff.
Prepare to be blown away! Enjoy!
I've seen all his stuff. If he comes out with something new, I'll react to that.
Can’t believe no Danny Carey Tool on the channel…. Need to check out Pnuema drum cam
Will do!
I really hope you can repost your full Vortex reaction - blur it, add a watermark, more breaks, whatever you need to do.
I'm giving it a shot.
🤘🇺🇦🤘
!!!
Did you know Vladimir is officialy a trained piano player instead of a drummer?
I do now.
Is the rising elbow an internal timing motion?
I think it just makes the ghost notes easier.
Vlad and Haake in a drummers duel who would win?
I know you're a fan but have you watched the Mike Portnoy explanation of Fatal Tragedy "shrink and grow"?
I have not

@@teckreactions there's 2 one he explains it and one hhe plays it through. TH-cam won't let me post and share you the links.
My shoe of choice are some worn in adidas shell toes. Very flat and prefect for pedals
Me too! Chucks are the best.
what about a reaction for sleep token drummer on drumeo?
I’ve seen it.
