ABBA always reminds me of being stationed in Germany back in the 70's. They always played ABBA at the outdoor skating in the winter. Oh to be young again.
How ABBA came up with a song about the Mexican Revolution, shows how worldly they are. It also has a yearning aspect to older people(like me) reminiscing to their youth
A huge hit from them. I have over 70 ABBA songs in my library. I've loved them since '76 or so when I first heard "SOS" on the radio. They are the sound of joy to me. I could sing along with them all day and not tire. Two of their best songs were not big hits, but I recommend them: "One Man, One Woman" and "Move On." The Rio Grande river is the border between the US and Mexico.
@ollier67....you stole my thunder. Loved the song for about the first 4-6 weeks of its chart reign. Frida on lead vocals. In the end l just got sick and tired of hearing it. Biggest selling single ever in Australia for 21 years, until Elton's tribute to the late Princess Diana (Candle In The Wind 97)
The Rio Grande: In the United States, it flows through Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. In Mexico, the basin spans across Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. The river serves as a critical wildlife corridor, and is home to a wide diversity of plants and vegetation.
Thank you! This is my favorite ABBA song and almost no one reacts to it. I haven't seen anyone mention the "Third voice"! When Frida and Agnetha's voices combine in harmony they make the famous "Third voice" of the ABBA sound. Listen to them again and listen for it. The two of them together make an amazing voice. ( Now you'll always listen for it in every ABBA song ) ❤
A great song. Did you know this was actually written for Frida the auburn haired girl on her great solo album called "Frida Ensam" she sang it in Swedish. It was a huge hit all over Europe. She was a great solo artist. They redid it in English for ABBA and it was a hit again.
Fernando started off as a Frida solo which then became a huge hit for Abba. Interestingly I think this is the ONLY Abba song where Agnetha harmonises with Frida during the verse where her vocal is in a lower register than Fridas - Agnetha would normally harmonise above Fridas vocal.
You should react to "I Still Have Faith In You" from a couple years back. They got together after 39 years (all in their 70's) to do an ablum during look-down. They can still do it. And it's been checked no auto-tune to speak of was used. Just four very talented people.
This song was re-recorded in Spainish along with 9 other songs for an album release in Spainish speaking countries though I and many others bought it in non Spainish speaking countries. This song was re-released and went to no.1 again in many South American countries and Mexico.
I am now in my early 50s, and I remember back almost exactly 30 years ago when I was in my early 20s; and I felt the need to hide it from my friends when I bought my first ABBA cassette tape. Now I don't care who knows it that I listen to ABBA.
This song was released in 1976. I have an uncle Fernando who lived in Italy. When he came to America to visit us in the summer of 1977, we played the song for him and my grandfather translated for him. Brought tears to his eyes. PS-the day we were taking him to the airport to return to Italy was the day Elvis died.
The first vinyl I ever got was a 45 RPM single of their first hit, SOS. So I will always be extremely partial to it, even though that initial vinyl was at a yard sale across the street. The pile of singles didn't have sleeves at all and they were just jumbled in there and very well worn, and each one had a little piece of brown masking tape on ii where the price of one cent was written on it. I put this song as loud as my record player would go, this was before stereo systems, and play it over and over and over again, and I figured out how to play the keyboard part on the piano and so forth. I still love that song so much. I hope you end up reacting to SOS at some point. And the other single I bought that afternoon in 4th grade at the yard sale across the street? Yellow Submarine by the Beatles. As kids on the playground, we had all memorized the words and would sing it. But I was absolutely fascinated with this creepy dark song on the other side, listening even through all the scratches on the record, Eleanor Rigby. Wow.
Originally this song belongs to Frida❤'s solo career... Agnetha🩷 does the low harmony (when the girls sing together, they usually do it backwards). ❤️🇨🇱🤗👍

Please check the Spanish version of Chiquitita and Andante Andante. So beautiful. Also, The Visitors and Soldiers in English.
great reaction, as always. Did you know that this song was woven into the plot of the second Mamma Mia movie? It was sung by CHER and ANDY GARCIA as a reuniting of two lovers separated by many many years. I believe that a clip of the performance is available on TH-cam.
And you can listen this anytime. This is great music. This music never be "ordinary or average". Unlike thousands of average music or singers from today. This is fact.
I was thinking the other day about ABBA for some reason. The 60's were owned by the Beatles. Nobody bigger. Then I thought about the 70's. I'd have to say ABBA was the biggest worldwide sensation. Other bands were big then, but ABBA was on the highest tier
Sam is enjoying her partners song Philnando It's amazing that they also sing this in Spanish. The Rio Grande is on the border with U.S. and Mexico. The whole Southern border of Texas follows the Rio Grande.
This was likely their second most successful song and the dact that their most successful, Dancing Queen, came out shortly after this one, you can begin to see the enormous impact they had on the mid and late 1970s.
Many of there musical videos were directed by Lasse Hallström who is a Hollywood director today. He made movies like "The cider house rules", "Chocolate", "casonova" " whats eating Gilbert Grape "
Believe it or not but This is ABBA's biggest selling single of all their singles that they released, it sold over 10 million copies worldwide, they also released a Spanish version of this in Spain and other Spanish speaking countries, it was so popular that they released an Album sung entirely in Spanish of all their hits that was in 1979. This track was originally sung by Frida on her solo Album that she released before ABBA became international superstars, their Manager Stig Andersson made them record it as one of their singles. Most people always assumed that "Dancing Queen" was their biggest selling single but it was "Fernando". They also have another war themed song called "Soldiers. A very good Song but there's no video as it's an Album Track.
A great song. I have no idea but I do believe this is about the Spanish civil war. But the production of all ABBA songs are amazing for the age. As someone else said: "They don't sound like the 80's, they made the 80's sound like them." If you read books, I would also recommend "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared". A Swedish Forest Gump.
If y’all haven’t yet, you need to watch the movie, MAMA MIA. MURIEL’s WEDDING is another movie, which is set in Australia and is centered around Muriel who is obsessed with ABBA.
When I was a hard rock loving teenager I never thought I would say this, but ABBA is absolutely great. Have you heard the song "Du måste finnas", sung by Helen Sjöholm from Björn and Benny´s musical "Kristina från (from) Duvemåla" about swedish migrants to the US - if not you just must, it´s on TH-cam and there are videos with english subtitles from a performace in Minnesota. You will not regret it.
Thanks gusy.. If you ever do Abbas "Eagle", please be sure to choose the original longer albumversion! And not the shorter us radio edit out there sometimes.
I see a comment below ascribes this song to the 1910 Mexican Revolution. I used to ascribe it to the Napleonic campaign of the Peninsula War in Spain and Portugal. Until it clicked that The Rio Grande is mentioned lol. Is there a 'Rio Grande' river in Spain/Portugal. You should react to movies too. Check out 'The Gun ' starring Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra.
Soldiers The piper The visitors (though more about living in the DDR). So they did have a few about war. Fernando was also released in Swedish on Fridas solo album The greatest band ever❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of my most favorite ABBA songs. Thanks for reviewing it for us. Another.... "I Have A Dream." If you haven't reviewed it yet, try and set up a review of it. For the song, the female singers have a purity of voice that I've never heard before. And the song itself, its a song about a person who if filled with hopes and dreams.. It just pegs every meter there is to peg.
This song always caught the emotion in the back of my throat and made my eyes glass with tears. It is the story of soldiers in the Spanish - Franco uprising fighting to release from brutal tyranny in Spain. You can guess I am a Boomer.
No. It’s referencing the Mexican -American war. The Rio Grande is between the two countries. That war followed the 1845 American annexation of Texas. Song references the Mexican loss. During that period drums were used to rouse the troops. Doubt they were used during the Spanish Civil army which was much later (1936-39)
And the high pipes accompaniment reminds me of those from the Andes Mountains of South America. This is probably more for sonic flavoring as they reference crossing the Rio Grande between the United States (Texas) and Mexico. I am not aware of any significant Mexican military forces crossing north into Texas during the Mexican Revolution of 1910 - 1920, so the singer and titular Fernando could have been crossing south to support the revolutionary movement with U.S. backed forces led by Aureliano Blanquet. Wikipedia, it's a wonderful thing.
The Rio Grande starts in the state of Colorado, goes south through New Mexico, and then forms the southern border of Texas before ending at the Gulf of Mexico.
The song is sung from the perspective a freedom fighter from the 1910 Mexican Revolution reminiscing in old age with his fellow fighter Fernando.

so happy to see you again with ABBA songs
"Fernando" (1976)
is a soft ballad, so nice and beautiful
The best is the beauty of their vocal harmonies, very soft at the whisper level but at a level of perfection, that explodes in a magic chorus
I have compared it to "Chiquitita" (1979) because both songs have similarities and contrasts
Both have the title in Spanish, and was recorded in spanish too (to the album in spanish "Gracias por la Música" In 1980)
Both are pop ballads with an initial verse sung alone and from the second chorus in duet, with a very catchy and popular chorus (in my country Argentina are songs that we would sing in a circle of friends, because we all know their lyrics)
The two videos show the contrast of fire and snow, night and day
They were both very most worldwide successful, only behind "Dancing Queen"
ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía"
It was the manager who convinced them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style
(Frida had done it before in 1975 on her solo album in Swedish and it was a success, but with lyrics of a lovesong, and these to ABBA is a friendship story about mexican soldiers)
The manager was right and everything was a success, one after another in that year 1976,
with three singles #1 consecutives in UK
Mamma Mía (2 weeks)
Fernando (4 weeks)
Dancing Queen (6 weeks)
In addition, this variety of options had different results in each country.
"Fernando" was a colossal success in Australia (14 weeks at #1 surpassed the "Hey Jude" mark) and 7 weeks at #1 in Germany
"Dancing Queen" was 14 weeks #1 in Sweden and 6 weeks #1 in the U.K.and 8 weeks #1 in Australia
Both were #1 in the U.S. but in various rankings: "Dancing Queen" on the Billboard and
"Fernando" on Adult Contemporary
The official video of "Fernando" was filmed in February 1976, with Dancing Queen the next day
in these Official Video you could see:
Bjorn & Benny, both in guitars
Frida & Agnetha confronted both in frontal and profile images (repeating "Mamma Mia" technique used) premiering her gypsy style dress
and a last comparation
"Fernando" (1976) is first ABBA single with Frida in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released before ABBA)
as "S.O.S." (1975) is first ABBA single with Agnetha in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released after ABBA)
That is why my next suggestion is to react
"S.O.S." (1974/1975)
the second worldwide hit to ABBA
first of 18 singles Top10 consecutives to ABBA in UK
Thanks so much for these video and reaction

Many of there musical videos were directed by Lasse Hallström who is a Hollywood director today. He made movies like "The cider house rules", "Chocolate", "casonova" " whats eating Gilbert Grape "
And they sing all there hits in a language that isn't their native language. As an old 60's 70's rocker, they helped ease me into the 80's.
Best Band Ever. Do The Day Before You Came 😊
A great song. I have no idea but I do believe this is about the Spanish civil war.
But the production of all ABBA songs are amazing for the age. As someone else said: "They don't sound like the 80's, they made the 80's sound like them."
If you read books, I would also recommend "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared". A Swedish Forest Gump.
Not the Spanish civil war but the Mexican Revolution.
The harmonies are ethereal but they really pioneered layering vocals. The girls are often singing at least 6 layers.
remebr vis was al ovr v radio cldnt get away frm it haha. huge hit, abba had dne it again another hit
I caught a lot of bull from friends in the 70s for digging ABBA. I'm still unabashedly onboard.
Remember this song was huge in Australia
Think you guys would enjoy Eagle, but make sure its the near 6 minute version as the radio edit cuts the best bit imo.
Thanks gusy.. If you ever do Abbas "Eagle", please be sure to choose the original longer albumversion! And not the shorter us radio edit out there sometimes.
The Rio Grande is one of the major rivers in the Southwestern US. The mouth is in the Gulf of Mexico.
Eagle is my favorite Abba song.
There are so many more great songs by them.
Another somber, war-themed ABBA song is Soldiers. I recommend it.
Soldiers
The piper
The visitors (though more about living in the DDR).
So they did have a few about war.
Fernando was also released in Swedish on Fridas solo album
The greatest band ever❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Please to "Does your mother know" thank you!
Waterloo won the Eurovision Song Contest. It's what launched them to stardom.
Have you noticed in ABBA's videos that when they show the women singing at the same time, they project them at right angles.
One of the only songs of there where Frida sings the higher melody and Agnetha sings the lower harmony.
U should do Cher version of this song in Mamma Mia!! Here we Go Again!!
Rio Grande, border between U.S. and Mexico.
I've always loved ABBA. I just want to say I've notice many times that Phil more or less doesn't look at the group but prefers just to listen, why?
The Rio Grande starts in the state of Colorado, goes south through New Mexico, and then forms the southern border of Texas before ending at the Gulf of Mexico.
Actually, ABBA had a lot of big songs. They were one of the most successful groups that came out of Europe, ever.
