  • The second Cello Suite in D minor, performed by Steuart Pincombe for All of Bach, has a dark and introspective tone. It is one of the favourite pieces of Pincombe. As such, he was delighted when we asked him to record this suite in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. The searching character of the piece suits Pincombe’s outlook. In his playing, he always tries to create something new, rather than recreating past experiences.
    Recorded for the project All of Bach on February 12th 2018 at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

      @XDranzer000 As far as I know It's because of European music history! :-) The 'Suite' form developed in France in 17th century. Musicians and composers were very curious about what was new in music and they traveled and corresponded a lot more than you would think! The suite with the french names was very popular until mid -18th century. Sometimes called Suite de dances or Ouverture or Partita.

    This was the description of life itself. It starts calmly then gets to the excitement and joy of youth but then the joy is interrupted by great sadness and melancoly. The sarabande is the turning point, the crisis that tempers human life. The menuets are the coping with life's adversity, the acceptance and resignation to its imperfections but also humankind's resilience to withstand difficulties and at last the synthesis of life and death, good and evil.
    I admired most the interpretation of the sarabande. Such outcry of pain, strife and misery, the cellist surpassed the possible! His instrument became the human voice of ignored supplications, fervent pleas, anxious plaidoyers, it was great and terrifying, violent and complaining at once, it was the catharsis of life and its sense. I salute this cellist with respect and admiration.

  • @jasonfrost5025
    @jasonfrost5025 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    I always love watching professional cellists play. They break every 'rule' your average teacher has about posture and bow holds, and literally each one has some different way of sitting/holding the cello/bowing/etc. Just goes to show you it doesn't matter how you do it. Just make it sound good. Also just realized this guy is playing old school style without an endpin. Sick.

    • @Zerge6095
      @Zerge6095 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's because it is playing it in "old style", using a baroque bow, and the baroque posture, to be most historically accurate, I think they also tuned the cello with the baroque tuning, but I can't tell if it is a baroque cello or not

      Some rules are more like guidelines, others are absolutes. Some apply only in certain situations. One of the worst errors with situational technique was when the French decided the legato technique developed by Lemmens should be applied to everything unless explicitly specified, including music written before the techniques were developed.

The tempos for the Prelude, Allemande and Sarabande are the first time that I’ve heard someone besides myself decide that they need to be slower in order to bring out the pathos and longing that is inherent in Bach’s sublime music. The second Suite always brings to my mind images of an atypically introspective tired old sea pirate trying to put his finger on where it all went wrong. I really enjoy how heavily Pincombe's interpretation leans into the musical elements that bring those images to my mind.

It is remarkable in this day and age for people to sponsor a project of this magnitude. You are giving us lovely, fresh insight into masterworks that may have been recorded before, but are worth hearing again with new interpretations. Heartfelt thanks.

    Its always amazed me how different and rustic baroque tuning on a cello is. Absolutely exquisite. As a classically trained cellist, I have played every Bach suite and I’m still so moved by how they sound just being tuned down a pitch. Maybe I shall try playing in baroque tuning! I mean, after all, I am only 14, so I would love to experience being the maker of such a sound soon. Wonderful performance ✨

      @@strashuninstitue390 hello! I will be 18 in a couple months. I have continued studying cello, though I won’t major in music in college, and I have for sure gotten better haha! The suites sit in my common repertoire, and I’ve been able to shape them well! When I was younger, I just played the notes that were on the paper, but now I can actually give each piece some life!
