How amazing to hear the upper notes slightly accented than the supporting leaps, so carefully done we hear both melody and supporting harmonic notes, the phrasing, so carefully done, the tempo consistently matching it, all with such feeling, control, nothing rushed, beautiful
I LOVED how she played the final note of the Prelude - I whispered "wow…" to myself when I heard it. She gave it four distinct moments of different timbres by making subtle changes to the bow's distance from the bridge, angle of attack, speed, and pressure. Those are the kinds of skills that elevate a great performance to a brilliant performance.

Echt unvergleichliche Cellistin!
This was my audition piece in college, and even though I hadn't heard it in 40 years, I couldn't resist. I have to say, she really did play it much better than I did. Well, doggonnit!
The more I listen to this incredible performance, the more subtlety and depth I hear, yet the net effect is an absolute and simple clarity. The companion video with Lucia Swarts talking about the suite is also well worth watching. Musicians often have trouble putting their thoughts into words but Swarts gives an eloquent commentary, and what amounts to a master class for anyone working on this piece. I was interested that, although she speaks of her debt to her great teacher, the late Anner Bylsma, her approach to the bowings in the problematic Anna Magdalena Bach ms seems to me much less dogmatic and more flexible. Bylsma could certainly make the crazy bowings work, but she has apparently opted to base her performance on the older and perhaps more accurate Kellner ms.

God knows how much I wish this lady who played the Cello tonight the most happy life free from sorrow & anxiety & to TH-cam thank you from the bottom of my heart. Fadia Sultan

I believe it is a combination of the cello itself, (which is what caught my attention and prompted me to listen) and the ambience of the concert hall. As a cellist, with a cello that is 195 years old, I recognize a quality of sound that is almost impossible to produce on the more modern instruments. Brava! I want to hear more! Marcia Crain, Ph.D.

The thing about these suites is I know them so well, I tend to get hyper-critical about phrasing, bowing, etc etc. oooo, would have done that bit differently, blah blah blah. That being said, she gets a gorgeous voice from her instrument and it's a wonderful performance.... These are delightful.
This music supports many different choices of interpretation and that is one of its many beauties and wonders. I rarely say : that's a wrong way of playing this particular bar. I welcome any original proposition, as long as it shows, with musicality, a minimal amount of consistency and technical accuracy.

Very expressive hands. They seem to assist her achieve a certain clarity. Also, I noticed how she often lifts on the descents, the opposite of what one might expect. The dance movements allow for an imaginary open space filled with people. The sense of dance is well maintained. So here is a performance full of personality, yet broaching a category of how to approach this piece.

@@TheMarceladaSilva Exatamente, me sinto em paz!
Echt unvergleichliche Cellistin!
This was my audition piece in college, and even though I hadn't heard it in 40 years, I couldn't resist. I have to say, she really did play it much better than I did. Well, doggonnit!
Lucia Swarts is a truly great artist and a unique Bach Interpreter!
As I listen contemplatively, I am mesmerized by the strength and delicacy of the cellist's hands.
A real and true professional ,the whole composition is in her brain and freely flows...Just perfect ..
I'm so happy that Lucia Swarts got to record this for them, she's in so many of the other videos.
My previous favourite 'interpretation' of the cello suites was Anner Bylsma's 1979 recording for ProArte. This is definitely my other favourite.
Incredibly well filmed, recorded and performed. Top notch. This is as close as you can get to a cello suite experience. Great initiative.
This is the one I was looking for. The others tend to go at this very aggressively. I like suite one when it's played softly. Thank you.
Absolutely. I am surprised and blown away.
so beautiful, even the camerawork/cinematography is great, nothing distracts from her great rendition of the suite
Oh how beautifully played! Simple yet so many expressive and you can see the beauty in the expression of the baroque cello
Just magic. It's an honor to be alive and hear this interpretation.
Precisely
To be alive and hear this magical moment is why we're a;ll here! @@Marianofrv

Right out of the gate this overplayed piece sounded luxuriously different. A feast for the ears! Thank you for all this music. It is a gift.
I played this video to my newborn baby one hour after I gave birth.
Listening to this Cello Suite makes me somehow understand that there is a mysterious armonie in the universe
Ah my God!...what is going on, on TH-cam. I feel in trance seeing this lady playing Bach Cello... It seems like eternity where one does no more feel any pain, any grief, any loss, any sadness, any trouble in this troublesome life. I watched her lost myself in her hands movements, in her facial expression as if every fibre in her soul, body & spirit is living the moment: here & now. I looked at her face, & I saw the beauty, I looked at her hands & I felt her healing something wounded in me. God knows how much I wish this lady who played the Cello tonight the most happy life free from sorrow & anxiety & to TH-cam thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Heaven .. thanks so much for such a beautiful present this morning at work. I will be glad to see this kind of concert personally. From South America Uruguay. God bless this wonderful hands that can play music.
It is truly beautiful indeed, Jacqueline! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. Just a spectacular performance. Many have tried to unpack this truly master piece for cello, and I have heard many of them. This is a breathtaking experience many should take time to enjoy.

Beautiful performance of timeless music. Thank you Lucia!
This is the best performance of the first suite I have ever heard. Brilliant.
When listening to Bach my heart beats before so much beauty, my body widens before such sensitivity and capacity to transmit.
This is absolutely the right way to play this piece; very fine indeed! Love the articulation and different tone colours. Bravo!
the original performance was witnessed by some 20 people . And than another 3M had a peak too :D awesome. This video quite likely has more views, than all of the live performances show attendees of this piece worldwide ever. NBS has currently more than 107M views. Thats more listening to classical carried out, than probably all of the performances managed throughout all of 19 century.
I've never heard an interpretation quite like this. So expressive, subtle and Beautiful!
To specialize in the baroque cello is just fantastic and phenomenal in so many ways! I really admire her interpretation of Bach’s music as it brings me so much joy and comfort listening to the natural phrasing and mastery of her craft. Thank you so much Lucia Swartz’s for your devotion to music, words can’t express my gratitude. ❤
A strand of clear beauty in this stressful time.. thank you
What beautiful souls, even the cello and the picture have one. Thank you for this moment.
The sound of the cello was as compelling as the interpretation was.
The Netherlands Bach Society is a must go to for J.S. Bach music lovers!

I would agree; I never thought I would hear a version better than the one Pablo Casals made back in the 40s, but this is really amazing, and of course the quality of the recording...big congrats!!

Transcende a qualquer tempo.

These pieces caught me at the right time..... I went from goosebumps to being on verge of weeping! What music!
Excellent recording and production quality - to compliment a great musician - my hi-fi system greatly appreciates it.
The thing about these suites is I know them so well, I tend to get hyper-critical about phrasing, bowing, etc etc. oooo, would have done that bit differently, blah blah blah. That being said, she gets a gorgeous voice from her instrument and it's a wonderful performance.... These are delightful.
Nice words.
I think that the bowing here ist the original one.
This music supports many different choices of interpretation and that is one of its many beauties and wonders. I rarely say : that's a wrong way of playing this particular bar. I welcome any original proposition, as long as it shows, with musicality, a minimal amount of consistency and technical accuracy.
I love Lucia Swarts' playing ~ she revels in the deep sonority of the cello and the Suite...brava!
The most beautiful version of this piece I've ever heard! 💜💜💜
