@@donnewmeyer3133 Not trolling, just pedantic. Violoncello literally means "little big low pitched stringed instrument" which is commonly shortened to "cello" . The violone or basse de violon is the predecessor of the cello whose lowest string was tuned to b-flat and larger than the current size of the violoncello, hence the suffix "cello" attached to the violon (N.B. It is not violin, but violon). Also, the endpin only came into common usage in the mid-nineteenth century.

Eh... with a regular violoncello you get a LOT of resonance into your chest... actually more since the bow is made for more pressure and the instrument is bigger allowing for a larger sound. Baroque bows were quieter designed for more finesse in dynamics.
The violoncello da spalla or cello of the arm is a small cello on the shoulder, used by some composers such as J. S. Bach for his Cantatas de Leipzig, which in his version of five strings serves to interpret his Suite for solo violoncello No. 6. The violoncello da spalla was created to be performed by violinists (little experts in the interpretation of prawn, with the instrument vertically and held between the legs) since it was performed placed on the shoulder and chest, and was larger than the of the current viola. Some researchers believe that the 6 cello suites alone were actually created for this instrument
it's not that all 6 suites were created for this type of cello, only the 6th suite was created for it in particular, all other 5 suites are far more idiomatic to the modern cello except for the 6th.
Dear Rodo the viola da spalla has only 4 strings. There is no such thing as violoncello da spalla. This one has 5 strings, it's a VIOLA POMPOSA. If the tuning was the normal viola's CGDA plus the E string of the violin you'd get violino pomposo.

Wow! As a professional cellist I’m flabbergasted. I’ve seen/heard the Sixth Suite performed on the cello piccolino (smaller sized cello that is played the normal way between the legs) but never on a violoncello da spalla played as an arm cello. I’m so impressed. Playing this Suite on a standard cello is a challenge because it was written for a five stringed instrument with a higher E string. Without that top string you have to do all sorts of gymnastics with your left hand, which, if you have a medium to smaller sized hand, is tiring and sometimes downright painful.
I've been in classical music all my life and have never seen or heard of this instrument! I honestly thought the thumbnail was a joke. Why did this instrument not take off? It's awesome!
The real question would be: "why did it fall out of use?" And the answer would lay in the rationalization of the standard classical orchestra in the late 18th and early 19th century.

Danke!!!!
The smaller, more nimble, higher-ranged instrument really handles this suite better (to say nothing of the virtuoso playing it). Even in the greatest recordings on cello, you can always “hear the struggle” in this suite in particular. Here however, the limitations are considerably reduced and everything is available to be done full justice. The Sarabande is smooth as butter, the Gigue is light and acrobatic, everything just sounds more free.
Found this wonderful performance on my birthday. What a wonderful gift! Thank you my Dutch friends. I couldn’t ask for anything better. This is what you get when a samurai tackles Bach on the cello. An extraordinary performance!
Musically inspired, seamless, and simply beautiful. This instrument brings clarity while offering a depth and warmth of tone and facility that allows new ways of hearing the work. Bach sings with a new voice! I think the old man would be pleased.
Outstanding in every aspect - from the Violincello de spalla, to the musicality, to the gorgeous phrasing and intonation of this never heard 'cello suite.
When you realize they had cellists capable of this in Bach's day, you can kind of see how the viola became the ugly duckling of the family. Both violin and cello are so wide in range and usage that the poor viola is always stuck playing (pun intended) second fiddle.
This is my favourite Bach suite. Its already amazing, then to see it so masterfully performed in an acoustically unique setting on such a special instrument...this recording is unparalleled. Thank you!
It is amazing what human beings can do when the mind is focused! The beauty of this piece is pacifying and so beautiful. And the technique of playing this string instrument like if it was a violin.
What a delicious (and very late) discovery this performance is! I see CELLO and click on it - and it took me a mo to discover the finer details of such excellent, extra-ordinary and beautiful playing. I didn't 'watch' at the beginning, just listened in rapture - then wondered - and voilà, the excellent surprise. What a perfect artistry and what an incredible instrument. Thank you so much for sharing this gem.
This is for me by far and wide the most inspiring and enjoyable recording of this suite and the instrument seems to be totally adequate. Just great... thanks!
That first movement gives me a deep and unexplainable joy of living.Bach mastering the alchemy of life once more. Thanks for this beautiful interpretation Mr. Malov.Another good moment in my life.
i mean, we know how extraordinary this piece is, we assume the instrument he's playing is probably extraordinary - but nothing prepares one for his extraordinary and seemingly effortless playing
I have heard Brandenburg concert No. 3 on this instrument by S,Kujken in Tokyo. I think the merit that the violin player can play the basso continuo is also great.
This is sooooo cool! I love the fact that there are people in the world who want to keep long ago instruments alive, and this is one of my new favorites! An incredible virtuoso, thank you so much, Mr. Malov!
After a research, we know that he played an instrument called 'violoncello da spalla'. It was a cello back in the baroque era, you can difference it by the bow and it have 5 strings.
Wow! What a great sound from this instrument, that I dare to call a mini cello with 5 strings. And wow! What a great playing from Sergey Malov, he sort of dances this music out of this tiny cello body.

I love the sound of these original instruments. These are the instruments for which the composer wrote, the sound he had in mind.
Amazing performance and what a spectacular instrument, wow! These Bach cello, violin and lute suites are easily some of the best music ever written.
Beautiful recording. Never heard of a violincello da spalla before!
The most beautiful sounding bass, baritone, and tenor from this violoncello de spalla.
The natural reverb of the place where they recorded is amazing, comes across amazingly on headphones.
Found this wonderful performance on my birthday. What a wonderful gift! Thank you my Dutch friends. I couldn’t ask for anything better.
This is what you get when a samurai tackles Bach on the cello. An extraordinary performance!
I'm working on this piece now on the viola, and I found this rendition really inspiring.
Good luck you must be dynamite--'feeble violinist
Musically inspired, seamless, and simply beautiful. This instrument brings clarity while offering a depth and warmth of tone and facility that allows new ways of hearing the work. Bach sings with a new voice! I think the old man would be pleased.
Outstanding in every aspect - from the Violincello de spalla, to the musicality, to the gorgeous phrasing and intonation of this never heard 'cello suite.
The expression of the details is very delicate and I feel the artistry.Superior to cello with delicacy.
I'm blown away by this rendition, the instrument, the virtuosity and the overall creativity of this... I don't know..
Amazing tone. As a bad viola player with a not very resonant instrument, I am soo jealous!
Is that a child's cello?
I know they can make some very good quality instruments for kids
@@elliesheeran754 thanks ❗ellie ❗I internet searched it ❗🎻🎻🎻
When you realize they had cellists capable of this in Bach's day, you can kind of see how the viola became the ugly duckling of the family. Both violin and cello are so wide in range and usage that the poor viola is always stuck playing (pun intended) second fiddle.
👍👍👍👍cc
The way he plays gavotte 1 and 2 is so beautiful
Agreed!
The drone from the double stopping is hypnotic and majestic. The ornamentation is very tasty
Astonishing, riveting, and beautiful. Thank you.
Etonnant, captivant et beau. Je vous remercie.
This is for me by far and wide the most inspiring and enjoyable recording of this suite and the instrument seems to be totally adequate. Just great... thanks!
Is it just me or is the fact that he is playing this all from memory absolutely astounding.
That first movement gives me a deep and unexplainable joy of living.Bach mastering the alchemy of life once more. Thanks for this beautiful interpretation Mr. Malov.Another good moment in my life.
that's a *big* violin.
that's a small cello))))
It's a viola (de spalla)?
@@evanroden2225 More precisely a viola (or cello) da spalla. ;)
I wonder how many times he poked his eye before he even started to sound good in this instrument 😂
it's called cello da spalla
i mean, we know how extraordinary this piece is, we assume the instrument he's playing is probably extraordinary - but nothing prepares one for his extraordinary and seemingly effortless playing
I have heard Brandenburg concert No. 3 on this instrument by S,Kujken in Tokyo.
I think the merit that the violin player can play the basso continuo is also great.
M-a impresionat foarte mult . Mulțumesc pentru postare , Bach trăiește prin noi . Salutări din România 🎻
🙏Incroyable.
I am staggered at how much work and talent it took for a human to produce these sounds from that wooden box.
Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
Mil veces mil gracias.
Enrico Dindo's version also shines. But, wow, this violoncello da spalla performance grows on me with each rehearing! Thank you NBS!
first time I see this instrument being played. Magnifique.
Bach is the god of music, and the NBS YT channel is the temple where I go to worship
I truly feeling that I'm going to heaven when listening to this.
Johann Sebastian Bach the best musician in history, how beautiful is his music and the polyphony of his pieces.
Amazing performance. I'm so glad to have been introduced to this wonderful instrument in this magnificent way.
Woa !
Fantastic. I just can't stop listening to it. What an inspiration: it's like Bach right next to me
Absolutely fantastic. His interpretation of the gavottes are unbelievable. 😍
This is sooooo cool! I love the fact that there are people in the world who want to keep long ago instruments alive, and this is one of my new favorites! An incredible virtuoso, thank you so much, Mr. Malov!
Cela est tout à fait magnifique. Bravo monsieur Malov.
I'm stunned at the beauty of this music and the beautiful playing. It doesn't go much higher than this! Wonderful.
Mr. Malov, my appreciation for your play and work! Wish you a succesful fulfilment of your great recordings plans. With best regards, Waldemaretz
Bravo Sergey! The 6th Suite is an absolute mountain of technical and musical challenges, and as a cellist I salute you.
