I have listened him play Bach's Cello Suite no. 1 in G dozens of times, but this is my first time hearing this. It sound exactly like I knew it would. What a titanic talent.
why can't i give a thumbsup each time i listen to this thru? absolute masterpiece. Mr. Maisky must have the spirit of Bach guiding his hands. Any other interpretation of the Suite's can not encroach upon this one. One of my dreams is to attend a concert of this man playing Bach before we all get too old@!

Came here after hearing Pincombe's vaunted interpretation, during which I was thinking, "This cannot be right. Bach never meant for ponderous emo pauses and gritty emo scraping." (I swear he's a kinkster from the leather bar circuit; it just has that "Imma make you my bitch as you succumb to my passion" attitude.) So I came here hoping to hear what it might really have been meant to sound like and Maisky's craft is a balm! So moving and lovely. What a relief!
I had a similar feeling. I mean, I have absolutely no idea about Bach's intentions, maybe Pincombe is closer to the "original" and of course I don't want to question his musicianship. But personally I don't like that the cello is so often associated with that over-the-top sombre sound and prefer these "lighter" interpretations.
@@atestan554 i have listened to Pincombe's version of this Bach suite, and i think it pales in comparison with Maisky's (i'm not a musician thought, i could be totally wrong).

Personally I read, so to speak, this sarabande not exactly as an expression of depression, but of a resistance, though a frail, wavering one, against it.
@percivalpc if I am correct, Bach wrote this suite shortly following the death of his wife, and I hear the intense grief more than anything else, though I suppose the beauty of his music lies in its capacity for many emotional interpretations

The end of the prelude gives me chills, absolutely terror-inducing
As I have said, 2 mist beautiful sounds in all of creation-- a child laughing and a well- played cello.

2nd cello suite is my favorite one. Maybe because of its tune d minor.
the Prelude is a masterpiece

D minor has a very nice sound to it.
