that happened to me when katrina hit. i had saved up, was going to visit new orleans for the first time in my life, and was going to get married and go to a halloween masquerade ball, while there. i was devastated when i heard the news. i also felt really guilty that i was upset about my plans at all, when so many people had so much devastation from the storms. it's a complicated set of emotions that these disasters can bring out. i'm really glad that most of the people i've seen are banding together to help each other, instead of making it harder. hopefully asheville recovers, rebuilds, becomes a new thing that rises like a phoenix of the old losses, and can one day see visitors fall in love with it again. i currently live four hours away and always wanted to visit.. now i'm just scouring my house for anything i can send to the recovery efforts we've got locally collecting donations for. watching people lose everything over and over is heartbreaking.
All the old timers on the hill warned us every year that we were only a wink away from this. Anyone who says nobody saw this coming didn't stop long enough to listen. You've all of my love, my Carolina Kin. May every day to come be more beautiful than the last.
Yep, there’s a reason I live on the second highest ridge in my county. Plus, the highest ridge is just west of our ridge, and our tornadoes all come from storms that form west of us, when the Gulf fronts meet the north/west fronts. Tornadoes like the flat land to the north and south of our ridges. We can get wind shears, but rain just flows through, and we have plastic clay and rock, so nothing even washes away. The only downside is crossing bridges to go anywhere, but we have a convenience store with gas station on the ridge, plus we all like to stay prepared in my neck of the woods.

We are in western NC, east of Asheville. In a small town in Burke County about 50 miles east of Asheville. We have NO power for 6.5 days now. Hard to find ice. That was the biggest hunt for a couple days. Yesterday, a Fema truck was giving out ice. I was thankful we werent forgotten as most media has been on Asheville area. And rightfully so. We finally bought a generator. A local YMCA opened their doors to anyone who wanted a HOT SHOWER! Wonderful! And anyone could also charge their tech. There are many GOOD PEOPLE out there! We are close to running out of water! We are charging phones and other things by car or now our generator. Someone asked in another thread how another person was posting. Strange question. Never in my memory has a hurricane gut punched these mountain communities this way. Most of the time they either come from the Atlantic coast, or if they go through the gulf they aren't nearly strong enough to carry so much water so far north. This is really unprecedented.
it happens all the time. thats why those mountains are so weathered and worn down. millions of years of this same thing. we just live on a tiny spec of the timeline so you dont see it

I've lived through multiple hurricanes in south Florida and have never seen such devastation as Helene unleashed. God's mercy be upon all in this aftermath.
I’m from Miami and went through hurricane Andrew. It was just as devastating but the destruction was caused by wind and tornadoes instead of flooding. We didn’t have electricity for a month.
It's all about location, location, location. You live on flat land. Mountains and valleys are a different beast. We had one 30 minute microburst thunderstorm last year in West Point area of the Hudson Valley NY and it became a federal disaster area because the water ran down hills, took everything in the creeks and streams and wiped out bridges, clogged drains which blocked roads with dirt that washed out around them. Hurricanes have done less damage over hours of rain and wind than one storm did.
@@barbaravyse660 I went through ANDREW too but it was a fast moving storm so the flooding was minimal. Let's not forget that Miami & South Florida also has an excellent system of drainage Canals that dumps any excess Rain water straight into the Ocean.
Such devastation! It’s just heartbreaking. We visited the Biltmore in 2018 and stayed at the Albemarle in Asheville. It was the most adorable town with fewer than 100,000 people living there.

If you were watching as Helene headed towards land, the were talking about how it would merge with a large system from the west, and a system from the east would keep it inland. This is not as simple as just a hurricane like the news wants to call it.
I have been fortunate enough to spend time in beautiful Asheville over the years. Such warm generous welcoming people. I don’t recognize these photos of anyplace I have been. @jamesdoman6387 True never thought about that. It's still pretty warm here in North Carolina. Still having days in the low 80s but know it's a little cooler I the mountains.
My heart is broken. Lives are affected and livings destroyed. I am so sick of politics failing our country when it comes to caring for victims of natural disasters this community is destroyed. Any of us in our beds this evening need to make a donation and thank God. Prayers for Asheville
Wow… I remember standing on that overpass behind Moe’s when it flooded in 2004. It’s hard to believe that the water was 6 feet higher the other day… raising all the building elevations a few feet didn’t matter apparently.
I followed that previous storm from the Gulf of Mexico up to Asheville thinking I was retreating to the mountains. We lost a pond dam in South Georgia and then I lost electricity and had to boil water at my house… Biltmore Village looks way worse in this video from what I remember. The water must have nearly reached the first floor ceilings.
@donnapevey4672 But this wasn't just a lone hurricane. There was a system to the east, and a system to the west. Helene merged with the west system, and the east system kept it from moving out into the Atlantic.
I expected severe flooding, but I never expected this severe of devastation. Bad time for insurers, too. It's not just a matter of clean-up, many of these places will practically have to be rebuilt. It's really heartbreaking to see.
Thank you for capturing the real live look of our town. My friends and family live in other states and the pictures they project on TV do not tell the story. When you see it with your own eyes it's extremely haed to swallow and sad to see. AVL Strong ❤
We always think because we are so far inland, we are safe from Hurricanes. In Atlanta nothing happened to my house, except patio furniture blowing over. 2 miles away, mass flooding and trees down everywhere.
And I was just thinking earlier this year to move from Florida (I'm in Ft. Lauderdale right on the ocean) to somewhere like Georgia or the Carolinas, so I won't have to hold my breath every year, hoping a storm doesn't come through. But now it looks like Nevada or Arizona might be a better location.
But this was not just a hurricane. This merged with a system from the west, while a system from the east kept the new bigger storm from moving out into the Atlantic.
It is so surreal to see this unimaginable damage and to hear the birds chirping in the background like it's just another beautiful day and yet… It's not.
I heard a dog barking when you were at the animal hospital, it concerned me. Any way to check? This is so so devastating and sad for everyone affected by this😢
Probably no one had flood insurance since the whole area is in a flood zone. The insurance companies won't pay for structure damage. Property yes. Trust me on that. Insurance agents in this situation are slicker that a can of melted M&M'S
I wouldnt say the agents are slick. It's the federal government for most flood coverage unless it's private flood. I'm an NC agent and I can tell you they'll pull the wool over your eyes in a hurry if you're not up to par on your know how.
Sure would be nice to have all that hundreds of billions of aid money directed towards AMERICAN citizens instead of wasting it all on Ukraine right about now.
Leaks but nothing major. The grounds are a different story though, riverside areas including roads are going to be in rough shape and trees are down everywhere.

that happened to me when katrina hit. i had saved up, was going to visit new orleans for the first time in my life, and was going to get married and go to a halloween masquerade ball, while there. i was devastated when i heard the news. i also felt really guilty that i was upset about my plans at all, when so many people had so much devastation from the storms. it's a complicated set of emotions that these disasters can bring out. i'm really glad that most of the people i've seen are banding together to help each other, instead of making it harder. hopefully asheville recovers, rebuilds, becomes a new thing that rises like a phoenix of the old losses, and can one day see visitors fall in love with it again. i currently live four hours away and always wanted to visit.. now i'm just scouring my house for anything i can send to the recovery efforts we've got locally collecting donations for. watching people lose everything over and over is heartbreaking.

This devastation was enhanced by 2 days of rain that preceded Helene's arrival. So the ground was already saturated.

Because of the rain. Yes that is from the hurricane.
@donnapevey4672 But this wasn't just a lone hurricane. There was a system to the east, and a system to the west. Helene merged with the west system, and the east system kept it from moving out into the Atlantic.
@AFloridaSon the low to the West brought 6" of rain before Helene ever made landfall and that hurt us right off the bat. Thanks
