      On my 2007 Fit that's using similar starter design, this noise is quite common as well.
      The rebuild starters use different design of solenoid with plunger is sliding in nylon bushing not greased brass sleeve; also the black rubber boot at the end of the plunger hardens over the time,preventing quick return of the gear. Lubricating the pinion shaft will collect more dirt and the problem will quickly come back

    I could not find a single video that demonstrated the issue I had. Ever since I had m ycar I would crank the car and let go off the key as soon as I knew the engine was running to make sure it wasn't grinding.
    Is the grinding noise bad in the long run?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes the grinding is bad long term as it’s metal on metal wear. On this video the fix wasn’t too difficult but access depends on the car.

      Time to see if this can be my first automotive repair, I know its only two bolts and its accesible from the top but I dont have much room to work with. Scared of runing other things so maybe I will take it to a mechanic.

      @@xinity5522 Go on, give it a go! Take pictures of the area in case you disturb anything. Take your time and if you have a problem, take a break to think it through. And spend a little of what you would pay a mechanic on getting some tools to make it easier. That way you save money, can do a better job as you can spend more time on the job and you build up a tool set! What’s not to like! Good luck.

    Hello is it possible i am getting this noise in about 2100RPM only? If i keep the 2100rpm exact the noise persist. I use TD4, Thank you

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is unusual so probably something else. Use a rubber hose held to your ear and move the other end around the engine to try and locate where the noise is coming from.

    I'm having a grinding issue with my Kia Rio 07. As soon as. I start it it's a very terrible and constant grinding sound. The only way to stop the grinding sound is to immediately put the car into drive. Any other gears continue the grinding noise. Therefore I'm having to cut the engine off before placing it into park after driving. Any advice?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn’t sound like it’s related to the starter motor unless the starter is sticking on and putting it into drive cuts the power to the starter. Test this by starting it then immediately remove the power cable going to the starter.

    Good afternoon sir hope your day is going well! I have an INNOVA 3300 i want to use to probe a starter relay pin 30 & 87 on setting DC10A using the red and black lead, is it possible for me to use the INNOVA 3300 as a jumper wire?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good day thank you. You can use your multimeter as a jumper wire on DC10A setting as long as the current is less than 10 Amps. A starter relay takes around 8-10 amps but can spike to 30 Amps initially so I wouldn't recommend using your multimeter in this situation. If you want to manually start the starter motor then use a spanner to short across from the + large cable on the starter motor across to the relay connection. Be careful it doesn’t touch anything else as large currents will flow!

    Is it cause for concern if this noise occurs only on cold starts? On warm starts the noise is gone?
    Any downside in just tolerating the noise for the cold starts?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The grinding noise is the teeth of the starter and the teeth of the flywheel ring gears bashing together, so it will increase wear over time. They will both be ok for a while but eventually you should fix it to avoid problems in the future, like not being able to start.
