Because real circumstances change.. e.g. not able to pay mortgage and need to downsize, larger family size etc. Forcing people to stay put within 4 walls is quite draconic, and historically, whether people move to a new house or not has only ever been decided by the person's financial capacity.
TBH, the best method is to remove HDB from the free market and let the government decide a fixed price for all flats, and all buying/selling is with HDB directly rather than the free market. But government needs to have the guts to implement this at the cost of incurring the resentment of residents who are now used to profiting off their HDBs.

S'pore's aging pupulation is increasing and us singles have sacrificed our social life to take care of our parents and also other siblings and hence we deserve a flat that is affordabl., As single means single income and no joint payment towards our flat, right?

Simple analysis, assume each individual have no siblings and 2 parents.
Single can work lets say 50years, with 2 parents as burden.
Attached both can work 30years, with kids and 4 parents as burden.
The difference in 20years of work is replaced by their kid(s) whom will replace workforce for at least another 30years, plus a chance to repeat the cycle
So attached win in most case since singapore as a country see long term benefits.

Rare and fair attempt to challenge policies but Minister has cleverly deflected it into a funny and personable moment about marriage advice.
The real questions are, ' how do you reconcile the fact that married couples can have multiple properties- including investment ones- while single singaporeans can't get one? How can the former cause a price hike at the expense of the latter?' Remember some PAP ministers are now in trouble because of how they secured their multiple properties. This is not about an exception but about recalibration and ensuring all Singaporeans are taken care of.
By the way, ' how do you decide which is more deserving?' Ah... boy, that's your one job. Do your job. You get advice and data from your public servant and then, decide.
Ps. I'm writing as a single singaporean living overseas in a house overseeing a stunning view... at a price of a mid level condo in Singapore. It's getting really tough to compete and I'd bowed out of the competition in Singapore.

In a rush to want to live in a house of your own or in a rush to buy a house to speculate like in your parents day? This is a very personal question you have to ask yourselves and only you have the honest answer. In Singapore if you are willing to commit and you have enough money for your commitments there is no shortage and difficulty in securing what you want and this is a truth. Nothing wrong in asking the government if you want a house of your own to your name and good for you However for those who want to speculate and use houses as a springboard to spring to higher heights you have to be mindful that time have changed.During your parents day there is lots of room for value to grow but come to this day there isn't any more. Housing speculation price have become unsustainable already and if you mismanaged your speculating activities you will just end up carrying housing debts from one house to another your whole life. Not to mention you screw up the housing market for others as well as even first time HDB flats are also affected and have their value adjusted to reflect the big market pricing trend too.

I'm single for financial and privacy reasons. I had this intention in my late teens and my career choice/finance just followed accordingly.
I neither have a "good" job nor ambitious enough. These two qualities are critical to raising a family to ensure your household can be supported and children have the resources to get ahead in life.
As a single, I think that national land and resources have to be prioritised for families.

I just want to say that the 5 room system is broken. DINK couples being able to better afford 5 room homes is just nonsense. We need to do better to make sure that families (applications made by parents with at least one child, or applications made while pregnant) get 5 room homes, and limit DINK couples to 3 room and 4A room houses. Singles should continue being limited to the 2 and 3 room HDBs, regardless of their ability to afford more expensive public housing. This is a utilitarian problem in Singapore, with scarcity as the primary driver.

    • @surr3al305

I believe there is a middle ground between the rising needs of the singles as well as the married.
Good news is that the govt has taken steps towards helping singles own flats by allowing them to BTO 2-Room Flexi flats in all locations from the second half of 2024 onwards. Very few married couples would voluntarily want a tiny 2-Room flat if they can afford a 4-room and above. So both needs can be met.
However, more can be done for singles. I hope the age of buying flats for singles can be progressively lowered from 35 to 33 to 31... all the way to perhaps 28(?).
With more Singaporeans choosing to get married later in life or to remain single, their voice should be heard. I believe there are more ways the country can work towards that while fulfilling the needs of the couples.

Agree with her tell me which marriage or married couples are happy, most just clinging on for the sake of kids, wrong values passed on to the kids when both parents start looking for love out of marriage, and they make use of singles eventually..haha..so best marriage is individual decision and singles should be given equal opportunity in jobs(give them parental leave to take parents to hospital appointments just like child care leave)!and also equal opportunity to buy and own a HDB flat.
