Parts of Eastern Canada would be considered parts of the "Rust Belt", including Southern Ontario, once a major manufacturing hub for Canada now experiencing one major plant closure after another and losing well over 100,000 manufacturing jobs, and also parts of Canada's Atlantic Provinces, especially Newfoundland and Labrador where they experienced one fish plant, mine, quarry, pulp and paper mill, or manufacturing facility closure after another, and now this Atlantic Canadian economic marvel and oil producing superpower with a population around 520,000 people is on the brink of financial ruin.
Nova Scotia in particular last lost thousands of manufacturing jobs as a result of numerous mill and plant closures and massive cuts over the last 20 years, including their pulp and paper mills, beer factories, candy factories, bakeries, food processing plants, call centres, dairy processing plants, car manufacturing plant (shame on you Volvo there), tire manufacturing through Michelin (though their plants are still around, they cut over 500 jobs at one of their plants), and rail car plant.
Nova Scotia's largest city, Halifax, lost thousands of manufacturing jobs, including almost 700 direct jobs as a result of "The Hershey Company" closing their Moirs Chocolate Factory in 2007 despite receiving tens and millions of dollars from their provincial government. This city also had a Volvo Car Manufacturing Plant until the Swedish based automaker closed it in 1998 and shift production to Brazil.

These manufacturing jobs were not lost, they were sent somewhere else.

Indeed they were by the corporations who sold out the U.S. taxpaying citizens.

The decline of the Rust Belt is one of the many reasons why the better days are behind us.

      don't kid yourself.
Big businesses kill smaller competition via price wars.
But outsourcing labor to country like a corporate traitors results in the decline of a region where most of the population is tied to the same industry. Unemployment and migration (due to no opportunity). That's what causes this.

silicon valley is going to be the next area of decay. they're having trouble getting tech companies to come back to their offices.
i'm worried our tech sector will be eaten alive by china and india.

I object to the term 'rust belt.' Our Northern cities produced the goods, schools, and people that made the US exceptional.

“Produced”. Unfortunately most companies exported their manufacturing overseas to make prices cheaper

Industrial countries, such as the USA have ended a cycle, as I see it.
And by the way, it's not only the United States, also a good part of Europe.
They are in a Post-Industrial process, that's why those societies are having a difficult time to adapt.
But they will be o.k. in the future, in another type of economical way.

I agree. Another cycle, in whatever form, will begin... It might involve the stars this time..

Just being outfought by third world countries. The wealth of US demands high maintainence third world countries doesn't. And yeah times have changed US was once responsible for 80% of all vehicle production this day they are at some 15%.
US went from being a by all means global industrial superpower something that has by far lost value in a world where most of the third world has been industrialized.

Thank greedy capitalist corporations sending all the jobs abroad dummy. Now what do rd U. S. produce? Lack of living wage jobs is the by product of love of money by corporate govenment. Here is trickle down economics at its very worst.
