No man, but A tier is an absolute for me. I'm Mexican, grew up having a ranch, riding horses and working the land. I definetly love my cowboy boots, I would never be able to not have a pair in my wardrobe, some of them can really dress up denim into a proper Canadian Tuxedo and there is nothing to replace them when using a cowboy suit (except for the low cut mexican boot). But they can't be an S tier just because they do lack versatility while oxfords can be used with denim, a tuxedo and everything in between
I was like, "I can respect all of her opinions here. But if she doesn't rank Hey Dudes bottom teir, then I'm turning this off." So glad she's on the Hey Dude hate train. She knows her fashion. 😂
I love my Jordans. I never wear obnoxious ones though. I only got Jordan 1 and 4. I love when a girl has similar taste as well when it comes to nice sneakers. I meeting a girl who had nice pair, I complimented her Yeezys and we sparked a whole conversation.
I was with my sister in a shoe store just this Sunday and she was trying to persuade me to buy some shoes and I literally said, "No, I think I'll wait until Courtney Ryan does a video about men's shoes before I start trying anything on." And as luck would have it, I only had to wait 3 days before you released this video. Talk about perfect timing! Thank you for all you do Courtney!
You are one of the classiest, warm, sweetly feminine woman I have seen on the internet in a long time. I really appreciate your fashion sense for men. 🇺🇸
Wow! Courtney likes my shoe collection! I will say I have a pair of black cowboy boots I take real good care of and keep highly shined and they are the most complimented pair of shoes I've ever owned. I was walking through DFW airport once and one of the shoe shine pros yelled at me that I was doing good. Best shoe compliment I ever got.
A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I were out with her best friend and her best friend's husband (we've known them for a long time) and her friend could not stop talking and gushing about the snip toe Lucchese boots that I was wearing.
COWBOY BOOTS! ❤️😁❤️ The footwear for every occasion. I am British, I live in the UK. Certainly NOT a place where Western wear is fashionable, but I LIVE in cowboy boots, and have done for over 10 years. As you say, they are so diverse. - Trousers or jeans outside: they are very smart. - Tight jeans inside: They're rock 'n' Roll! 🤘 - They're practically slippers, so you can whip them on quickly too! - They're interesting. Often I get an intrigued look and a "Are those cowboy boots?" from someone. "Yes" I say, as I pull up a jeans leg to show the full boot. "Cool!" they say, with an impressed face 😂 Cowboy boot: the boot to beat all footwear 😁
Hell yeah! Rock those cowboy boots in the UK! I live in rural Pennsylvania and about 80% of the guys and ladies wear them. We have an Amish boot store here that will resole them for you. Not to mention the boots last a long time.
It’s difficult to put Jordan Retros in here because like you said, they’re so many kinds of them and throughout the years. The look and style have evolved as well. Certain Jordans will always be classics. Some will be monstrosities now, then in a few years they’ll be the trendy shoe.
I actually got my nickname in high-school from a pair of nice basketball shoes which was life-saving. It saved me from years of people completely mispronouncing my name or saying "hey you!" 🤣🤣. Never know what nice shoes can get ya.
@@ReubenZeigler Nickname was T-Mac named after Tracy McGrady and the shoes he endorsed. People called me Karen or Koran but it's pronounced Karoon like balloon, lol.
Amazing list Courtney, love the explanations. I only disagree with one: the all black sneaker. I wear these all the time with black jeans and dark blue jeans.
I am so glad that my boarding school taught me so much in my formative years. I always wear oxford shoes (brogue and wing tips for formal occasion). They taught us how to dress for success, what color and type of shoes for every occasion, length of trousers and cuffs, always single pleated pants or flat front pants. Always two button suits, with either peak or notch lapel,1/4 inch suit sleeve shorter than shirt sleeve, Straight Pointed Collars on shirt. Still maintain same standard for grooming
@@victor5180 Both. There were rules for Tie length -- tip of the tie shall touch the middle of the buckle at Max. Belt Buckle and Zipper should align. Oxford shoes with cap toe, laces tied knot must be in center. These rules were strict but their value was learned when I became Sr. Level Engineer meeting C suite stakeholders, high ranking state, local and federal officials in US and other countries. These grooming standards matter. My beard and Moustache is always properly groomed, I use straight razor every day, eye brows don't have wild hair stick out, my ties are only three types, Solid, Regimental, Medalion. Solid ties for Gov't and C suite meetings, Regimental ties for Military meetings, Medalion for formal parties (Cocktails, Dinner Functions etc). These standards are going down the tubes now. Younger generation just suck in choosing color and attire.
@@pharkle35 curious as to your age. I did not go to boarding school but many of the things you mentioned were things that I picked up through a life where I was expected to wear a suit and/or tie at functions but also just having a good haberdasher. I don’t think anyone taught me that your belt should match your shoes, or where the tie should lay, or some of the other things you mentioned. I applaud your education in these regards and I agree it is important. My point is that it is possible to arrive at similar conclusions without the need for a formal education in such things. Given the right influences, a smart man can come to similar conclusions. I can’t imagine not wearing a paisley tie! 😆 EDIT: I am 46
@@decomposingman 49 here. I grew up outside of USA therefore totally different frame of mind about time management and discipline. IMHO American Education system doesn't imbibe discipline in formative years
I think a penny loafer with a suit is a bad look in general. Maybe for summer at informal events or at a resort, but never for business or a wedding: those need oxford cap toes, or wing tips for a less formal business suit.
Penny loafers with a suit is not as bad as sneakers with a suit. Sneakers should never ever be worn with a suit. Even a plain white or black sneaker is a no no.
Texas man here, love that you included cowboy boots. I wear them when I want to clean myself up and present well, including on dates. Very versatile, but probably won't work as well outside Texas. Love them
Cowboy boots work easily anywhere in the southern and western US. They have grown more in popularity everywhere now because of the success of the show Yellowstone. Not only cowboy boots, but wax canvas jackets and jean jackets have been blowing up this last year. I’ve been rocking my Justin’s long before Yellowstone, but since have added two more Tecovas pairs, a roughout for everyday and a Caiman pair for special occasions. Thanks Yellowstone. Courtney, you should do a piece on the influence that Yellowstone has had on fashion/western wear the last two years.
@@ScottieKnoxvilleI'm in Kentucky. I started wearing cowboy boots for the practicality about 9 years ago. (And cowboy hats.) Two years of exceedingly wet weather had me tired of wet feet and hair as I was in and out a lot. Not only is my wife crazy about them, I have had hundreds of women, and probably a couple hundred men, comment on every pair I have. Alligator for suits or going out. Added a pair of "Cartwright" two months ago and have women obviously checking them out all the time.
I live just north of nashville and I think the cowboy boots work great here in tennessee and kentucky. There are also many different styles so you could dress them with a lot of different outfits. Take Boss Hog for Example
I agree with most of the rating. But the color of an oxford, penny loafer etc. has a lot to say for versatility. Recommend dark brown as it is the most versatile. Thanks for the video! :D
Very good round up and categorization on men's shoes! For me: The tasseled loafer, especially the leather one shown, definitely, imo, ranks above the penny in formality. I would put them in the "A" category. (You also have the tassel -skirt loafer; the pinch-tassel, which I would put a 1/2 step down with the pennies) The leather Chelsea boot was worn by that ever classy and very well dressed guy John Steed of Avenger fame....should be in "A" category.
I actually really love chukka boots, and I get so many compliments on mine! They're not all created equal though, so I did buy nice ones, which aren't really at the 'desert boot' end of the chukka scale. A nice smart leather pair in brown goes really well with trousers or jeans. I've also got some suede pairs in brown and black, which also get a lot of great feedback. I'm from the home of great shoes (Northamptonshire, UK), so I'm spoiled for choice.
I have heard that it is attractive for some women because they are brute, not so refined and delicate as girls shoes. So in other words I read they find the more masculine. But I don't... I haven't had one pair of those.
I completely agree. Not all chukkas are created equal and I get tons of compliments from the Allen Edmonds suede chukkas I have. They are actually very versatile, just not with a suit.
take a look at grant stone for service boots or loafers. they're not cheap. amazing shoes. depending on your personal style, i might consider "dune" or waxy commander. they're mid browns. great for khakis and blue jeans. i think darker brown shoes are over rated.
Hey Courtney, whats your opinion on the Jordan 3s Wizzards? Picket them up about 2 weeks ago. And actually the timing of this video was perfect, was thinking about what dress shoe to pick, will be picking up the Oxfords. Great Video
Those are cool! I have 2 halves of my shoe collection. More formal and more casual: colored sneakers, Jordan/ Adidas and running shoes. That’s not her style but a lot of them look good. I just tend to wear them with jeans or more athletic clothing. Chinos/ khakis or formal clothes I go with dressy shoes. I even like the “dress sneakers” when not super formal occasions, I think they’re cool. People dress super casual where I live. Most situations you will be very overdressed with leather boots or penny loafers. Where other parts of the country you’ll be a average or business clothes
@@sdb87149 yeah I get what you mean. In Germany they also dress pretty casually. Like chinos +"formal sneakers" is probably the most formal outfit you'll see here. But tbh my shoes collection is kinda lacking, AF1 J3s and now the dress shoe is all I got atm.
I wear shoes depending on the occasion. When I am a work, the employer requires to be business causal, I wear dress shoes. When going shopping, I wear sneakers
FYI, the spelling is *Chukka boot. But also they're timeless and have been around since WWII. 22:53 I've had my all-white old skool vans for 4 and a half years now and I love em to death. They're my go-tos when I have to go out quickly or I go somewhere with friends where I know my shoes have the possibility to get beat up a lil.
Yeah Jordan’s it really depends. 21:15 The MOST palatable models are the Jordan 1, 3 and 4’s. While others such as 11’s are great looking shoes, for a more mature style the other models of Jordans can be too bulky or basketball look. Of course don’t dress up in a full suit and wear Jordan’s - but original colorways of the Jordan 1 with a blazer, quality t shirt and trousers you can get away with - quite chic and European heck even Japanese kind of style. But yeah there are a lot of nice Jordan’s out there but no doubt the most versatile one (dress up or down) are the Jordan 1’s.
Enjoyed the tier list. Would defo appreciate more fashion content as well. I know Brett Cooper recently did one on wearing the right colors. I’d love to hear your take on whether that content is accurate/matters and some ways to apply that to our own wardrobe. Also a deep dive into how this « silhouette » you speak of works. I think some of my outfits make me look taller in the mirror if that’s what you mean.
I am a Yankee living out in the Rockies now. I never really got the whole Western boot thing until I moved here. You would literally ruin a pair of white sneakers or oxfords in a day. Most people wear a blundstone or western boot here to contend with the mud and snowy slush. They really are versatile and you can basically hose them off when you are done. Sometimes the environment just doesn’t permit certain styles.
Excellent assessment...in my opinion. I must confess to owning a pair of Timberland work boots, but they are strictly used for WORK like landscaping around the house, remodeling, venturing out in a storm, etc. I have owned three pair in 45 continuous years and find them highly durable for the price. One thing that makes me curious; which type of shoe would be the most difficult to overcome/unsee if worn by someone you were meeting on a first or second date? I am way past that point but still curious.
Hi Courtney! When I was a boy, we had shag carpet. Whenever I wore boots, I would always get a pretty good static shock! So, I am never going to be a boot guy. So, I would rank all boots at the bottom! Hope that you are having a great week!
95% same as my tier list. I had bought more than 300 pairs of different styles. And now only left 25 ones. Pure white sneaker, oxford, derby,Chelsey boots, roafer, service boots are my favorites. ❤
I recently bought a pair of black Chelsea as my elegant pair with a casual versatility and I have a moc toes which I really like as a casual boot. I’m not really an elegant digger , but to me service boots always felt like one whole purpose boot. I’m sure I’ll get a dark brown pair one time but I like that I have one for the more casual and one for the more elegant and cleaner
my number 1 dress shoe are my cognac double monk strap shoes. I love them so much. Then my black chelsa boots, I love them too! My next purchase I'm looking at is a boot. I was looking at Thursday boot Captain StormKing. I also need a white sneaker but worried about keeping them clean. Great list!
@@matt_valentine you would have to be an athlete during that time frame to fully understand the dynamic of Jordan's. Example 1 the patent leather wasn't for style it was for strength and durability on the Jordan 11 as stated above. Also the designs are actually not random in fact all the J's that Mike played in were designed off something he was into.. example the 14 model was a direct influence from his Ferrari. In alot of ways the history dating all the way back to the 1 is very detailed. There is a channel on YT called Wear testers.. Chris and Jodi ( Husband and wife ) excellent people by the way. Chris gives so much information as to how the shoe was crafted and the back story you can hear the passion behind it. I invite you to check it out. Just know that for alot of older gentlemen Jordan's aren't about a fashion statement it's about individuality and maybe a shoe you couldn't afford back then. In alot of ways I can respect someone wearing a pair of Jordan's over an expensive pair of penny loafers 'bought for style' from some brand that is just like the next brand for status purposes. Always multiple explanations for what could be... just food for thought.
no disrespect here but I came here thinking it was going to be some copy paste list of shoes, but you had valid reasonings behind ever shoe, and i really loved your review and pretty in depth opinion on all these shoes, i appreciate you're real review and am about to watch more of your videos :D
I really like this ranking, but I would've put the black sneaker on a higher tier, like a C tier or even an B tier. The black sneaker is a really solid option when you are a sneaker type of person who doesn't like the feeling of wearing shoes in general. It is true that it doesn't stand up too much outside a monochromatic look, but if you keep them clean, they can look kind off like a minimalistic black shoes, but much more confortable. Also if its a leather sneaker it gives them shine and the ability to be easy to clean. You can wear black sneakers with almost any outfit.
I’m not a huge fan of entirely black but can look good. Maybe go for a gum sole and/or one with small hints of gray or white. But yeah she was a little harsh. A lot of people dress in mostly gray/white where I live…
What about technical material high top sneakers? Also, what about sock style sneakers? For, example the ones from zara. Upper made from Black technical material and white sole with a green swipe kinda thing on one side of the sole.
I have three pairs of Carmina Chelsea boots and believe me when rock those I get tons of compliments from nice looking ladies. I have, brown and black leather and dark brown suede .
So many guys default to department store shoes or those cheap mall shoe stores like Aldo’s. Years ago I made the mistake of buying some derby’s from Aldo’s and they were so uncomfortable that I threw them in the trash. Toe breakers.
Im tiny bit disappointed that chelsea boots weren't ranked higher as they can be steel capped, waterproof work boots, or sometimes be office suit attire. (Not the suede pair though)
20:00 look I understand not everybody’s sneaker head but Jordan there’s like multiple types of Jordan style that they are good or bad based off the texture or style or color There are certain Jordans that I feel like are really nice and they’re amazing. I remember when I got my first pair of Jordans and I still got more pair of Jordans am I own opinion Jordans will always be to me here because they are the most amazing fire shoes for me I’m 21 years old and I still remember when I was young. I saw the Jordan five the Jordan four the Jordan 11th.
I wear hey dudes shoes for running errands or walking around the house. I also have black blundstones stylefor work/photography and the food bank. I have simple cowboy boots and I always get compliments. When a guy wears white sneakers I think he is into real estate or a drug dealer cause he doesn't get dirty or work with his hands.
I tend to wear brown leather boat shoes in summer and black leather Chelsea boots in winter. The main reason is I work in people's houses where I need to look both smart, but also have a practical shoe and be able to go between inside and outside with an easy slip on/off. That said, penny loafers could work easily as well. Service boots would be annoying because I'd keep having to do up laces.
Aw, crap I do have black snickers (New Balance) since my style is mostly dark colors. Still looking at this tier list ranking from Courtney's perspective was quite awesome, because it kind of gives us options of what footwear looks good on us while others you need to take to the nearest dumpster and set those things on fire.
Rock what works for you. Imo If you wear a lot of back, grey or dark blue pants, black is a way better option than white sneakers, which look like crap if they get even a little bit dirty.
I'm a truck driver and have listened to a ton of Courtney's videos while driving. I actually watched this one and I really appreciate being able to see her facial expressions. Her voice is so calm that her eyes lighting up is kind of surprising and engaging.
The thing with chukkas, is that there are many shapes to them (from the likes of Alden and Crockett to Ron Rider and Zonkey). I reach my chukkas as much as I do my chelseas. They can be dressed up very well depending on leather type and the shape of chukka. Most of my chukkas are perfect for smart casual and any events after work. I found everything you mentioned about service boots to be the same with chukkas. Saying this as an owner of 50 boots
Shoes which I have at the moment : 1 steel toed boots which I need for work. 2 dress shoes, which I might need for interviews or formal occasions 3 loafers which are handy when I visit indian friends or Hindu temples (the reason loafers are handy is that it's a requirement at temples, and at many Indian homes, to take of your shoes) 4 walking shoes for walking in the woods. These have extra heel support. 5 I might buy some running shoes if I get around to doing some running
Courtney, I loved this video! I'm a retired professional investor and one of the very first groups I followed was footwear. I've met some of the giants of the industry: Phil Knight (Nike), Paul Fireman (Reebok), Sidney and Jeffrey Swartz (Timberland). It's a fascinating industry, and, as you know, many styles come and go while, as you point out, some styles become timeless: such as the Chuck Taylor (since around 1920!) and the penny loafer which goes back to the G.H Bass Weejun Penny Loafer in 1936! You might not know it, but interestingly, the HeyDude Brand was bought by the Crocs in 2022 (deal announced in 2021). Despite these being two of your lowest rated shoes, Crocs itself has been a huge stock market success. I guess that old expression is true: There's no accounting for taste! Incidentally, I would suggest that your metaphor would make more sense if you said, "killed 0 birds with two stones" vs. "Killed 0 birds with 0 stones." The former alludes to the fact that there were two tries without success while the latter suggests no tries! Any view on Birkenstocks or some of the newer winners such as ON and HOKA (owned by Deckers?)
Courtney, I'm a podiatrist and I've never been so engaged by any video. I would give most shoes the same rankings +/- one tier level. Some comments: Penny loafers: the ones in the pic look sharp but this is what boys wear in first grade until they learn to tie shoelaces. B Tassel loafers: too flamboyant. C White sneakers: the shoe of the 2020s. We'll see if it stands the test of time. S is too generous. Oxford/Derby: look the same to me, and I'm a professional. Must own for every man, S rank on point. I'm not a boot guy and won't comment on chelseas/chukkas/doc martins. Cowboy boots can be a powerful attention grabber, think Schwarzenegger's entrance in Kindergarten cop, in snakeskin boots, smoking a cigar. Truly a statement piece. B Chuck Taylor's are overrated, I guess if you want to make a deliberate effort to look spontaneous. C Jordans: too expensive, lousy arch support, not even great for basketball. Unless you're in high school, it's a D. Vans: another shoe I've never seen a high school graduate wear. D Dress sneakers: I bought a pair, most uncomfortable shoes I own. Definitely makes a statement. They look nice enough for an unserious formal event, like an evening spring/summer outing. C Timbs: shoe of the 2010s. I had a pair of brown timberland oxfords from podiatry school that looked great and stood up to the snow. They lasted years, I miss them. Boots are very practical. B Crocs: your remarks are on point, I hate them for patients. F Hey dudes: squishy and comfy, maybe a good recovery shoe, could see these in a D or F tier. Square toe dress shoes. Iconic for the 2000s. I got married in a pair of them. F for now but you know fashion is cyclical. Boat shoes: the essential shoe of whiteboy summer. Wear it to church then straight to a barbecue without changing clothes. Whatever you're doing, you're not running or working, because whiteboy summer is all about being chill. B, A if you're under 30. Lastly you left off the newbalance dad sneakers, not flattering but sooo practical! Anyway I love your videos, you always have so much wisdom!
I am going to Spain in October. I am going to Valencia Malaga and Estepona. What kind of shoes do Spanish man men wear for everyday casual and dress casual. And if they go out at night what are the typical styles?
Are Timberlands not just a name-brand variation of what she is calling "service boots"? There are other brands of boots equivalent to Timberlands, pretty much all variations on the "service boot"
I think Timberlands are geared more like a work boot and hiking boots. Service boots are usually patent leather and modeled after military boots. Similar shape but work and hiking are usually a little more chunky silhouette I think. I think the service boots aren’t insulated padded etc like Timberlands. Probably why the slimmer profile.
Same with Dr Martens. But it's just like how Courtney ranks vans and chuck taylors which are variants of sneakers. They're popular enough that people probably appreciate the separate rankings.
@@nickmajora timbs and docs are in the category that people who wear either of them almost never wear other types of boots, whereas people who are actually into service boots or anything else are more likely to enjoy a variety of brands and styles.
Great list Courtney! I mostly agree with your rankings other than I thought Chukkas were ranked a lot lower than where I would have put them - I think they're a great casual boot that never goes out of style. As for black sneakers, I do have a pair of black Adidas Sambas that have what I feel is a timeless look, although I'll admit they're not very versatile. They do look good if you're going for a monochromatic look, though. If you do a future video, I would love to hear your thoughts on desert boots, venetian loafers, espadrilles, huarache loafers, and birkenstock sandals!
I’m so sorry Courtney but you will NEVER change my opinion on white shoes, especially white sneakers! I tend to lean more towards darks and understated looks and I honestly can’t think of anything in my closet that white shoes wouldn’t clash with
I'd personally swap the Derby and the Oxford. I feel the Derby is a bit of a "dandy" shoe. This year I took the plunge and purchased a pair of camel suede chelseas, which I previously wasn't a big fan of. I've received more compliments on these than for any other shoe I've ever owned. I typically wear them with a pair of 5-pocket blue, or other colored jeans. Other than the white leather sneaker, you don't seem to like any form of summer or beach vacation shoes to be worn with a pair of shorts during the day. I'd like to know what you'd recommend for that specific situation.
I can honestly say that I’ve owned more boots than shoes but have never picked out a pair of boots as a fashion piece. They have all had a practical purpose to them.
@@tastybrownie7448 yes, I guess working outside in South Carolina has conditioned my body to it. Just don’t wear cotton socks. Wear wool socks. Merino wool if you can afford it. For pants, it depends on what im doing.
I graduated HS in 93 to categorize my age. Chuck Taylors and Vans (and Jordans perhaps) are thrasher shoes. Straight skate shoes. I wore Chucks and Vision Street Wear shoes for skating, but I also wore Doc Martins from Jr High through HS and through my 20s and 30s working in kitchens and will attest that Docs are the BEST shoes to work in greasy fast food joints to steakhouses because of their slip resistance. I cannot attest to the Chinese Docs, but the English made Docs are worth whatever price they ask for them. I had a pair of 10 holes that lasted 11 years before I had to ditch them. And I wore these to work as well as on the daily when not at work. I am a guy, and I attribute shoe characteristics to function before style because I don't care how good I look over how safe and functional my shoes perform. With that said, I'm in the medical profession now and while most people wear trainers and sneakers to work, I like to step up my game with dress shoes and it is noticed. I appreciate your perspective and opinion on these matters. I agree the service boot is #1. Totally killer boot for a professional. It is funny how many patients I treat who wear Hey Dudes. I can't stand them. I think they're hideous. A person should have more ambition in their feet. But what is interesting is the low rating for square toe dress shoes. Its hilarious. I've seen more hate over the square toe than anything. Personally, I cannot stand white sneakers either. They're at the level of Hey Dudes to me. There are opinions abound, but I do thank you for your input and as you say, I'll take what is useful and leave the rest. Thanks for doing what you do!
I wanted to give you some feedback on this 2 months old video. Well : Thank you very much, I used to dress poorly in my twenties but after reaching 30 I knew I could keep doing it (I do a lot of sports and I was comfortable dressed in Adidas, Nike or Puma). You made me understand why fashion is important and I like the style that you show. I try to make and effort that I am sure my wife will like though if I had to be honest when I go to the shop I see a lot of shoes with slight variations, forget which one I came for and it feels like a headache...
Courtney, you are a star! Not only will this help a man look good in every scenario, it could save him some serious money on shoes. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on other elements of men's style. Especially for men who don't fit into what society deems perfection. Such as the tall, lanky guy, or the short and stout man. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Growing up in Chicago and skated growing up. Lots of street wear and skateboard/hipster style around. Definitley appriciate the different point of view, now that I moved out of state.
I’m gonna speak on the dress sneaker. I work at a Men’s clothing store that sells casual wear (Take a guess) and we sell some dress sneakers from Cole Haan. At first I HATED how they looked until we got the runners in brown with the white bottom. I tried them on and they were so comfortable. With my discount, i ended up spending about $40 and I love them.
As a woman - curiously watching if I agree with Courtney - I can confirm she is correct! 😂🫶🏻 Love a dressier shoe than a casual shoe on a man, and it always makes me do a double take at him and go ‘Humm…interesting choice of shoe’ (in a good way 😅). Plus, if he’s cute, it’s a great conversation starter.
@@dang75790 oh really? 😂😂 I quite like more unusual sometimes alternative styles and am always sussing out what others are wearing, both men and women. I guess that those who care, care. Each to their own. 🙃 Quite interesting though because for quite a lot of women (not all) shoes can become a whole topic of conversation but I’ve never heard men discuss shoes with each other…unless they work in fashion I guess or are sneakerheads. Hence why I was intrigued by this video. Would be interesting to hear a man organise his preference for female shoes as a point of comparison. 🤔 Whatever you like you should wear that. Always wonderful to see people being unapologetically themselves!
You are very kind… Anyone that wears Jordans, might I suggest growing up? also vans, if you’re over the age of 23 and you’re wearing those outside the house, you need some help.
I like how every casual shoes (like vans and Jordan’s) are considered C-D tier. Like do guys always have to dress up and looks pretentious? I guess men can’t even look casual or even think about it.
@@alexlopez5800 No they are not. lol. They have a specific sport purpose. Regular sneakers are similar to the all white that she mentioned in the video. Now if you are going skating or shooting hoops, then of course wear them.
@@Raiugabe Yep, obviously it's a choice to wear shoes like that all the time, but they won't look good to the opposite sex, which is what this video is about.
I almost never disagree with Courtney but must speak up on behalf of the Chucka Boot. It's at minimum a B. It's a great fall/winter boot that is easy to wear with jeans and chinos. It's much more versatile when it comes to body types. Chelsea boots can ONLY be worn by skinny dudes, they look terrible on bigger guys. Anyone can wear a chucka! To me, they are the white sneaker for the fall and winter. Guys with any sense of regular style would wear a chucka over everything in group B with the possible exception of Jordans (which I would never wear as an older guy)
Chukka boots were originally issued to WW2 British officers commanding in North Africa. So, after the war, in Britain they have become a classy and elitist choice for dressing casually. However, in the US, the army elites don't wear them, and the old school people are not getting used to looking at them. Therefore, chukka boots are still a novelty item for some people.
22:58 Crockett & Jones Argyll high leg derby boots, in dark brown wax calf, and with Dainite rubber soles (379 last). It seems that C&J has captured the hearts and souls of female stylists. :) Personally I can't stand smooth top grain leather cap toes on casual footwear. The frequent trips to my cobbler for scratch repairs drive me nuts. For me it's either full grain or medallion toe. These are a lot more resistent against scratches.
I also have PTSD from an all black sneaker. Anytime I wasn't performing at Disney and was in a guest facing role I had to wear a black sneaker. They could never be cute or stylish at all because comfort mattered more than anything. A cheap-ass Dr Scholl's totally black sneaker saved my feet on long days, haha! I love them and I hate them with the fire of a thousand suns.
I always liked the simple and classic look shoes. Like black Converse. I also like the new recommendations that she provides. Time to try something new, so thank you.
She is not wrong though. Jordon doesn’t have the versatility. Also there’s so many variations of Jordon and some of them are sick but some are really ugly.
@@ianianianianian5 go with the sick ones then. Calling out a whole brand is weird. I get it that they have become ubiquitous but how many adidas sneakers flop, but people can still say the Samba is a classic? Jordan 1s are S-TIER no matter what. Jordan 3’s & 4’s are S-TIER in the right colorways. Sure, there are others that don’t come off as well, but you can’t mix a whole brand up with it’s models. They have all white clean sneakers too. Maybe it’s their fault that you see them everywhere so you don’t get a classy opinion but most Jordan wearers have at least a pair for special occasions that are better than any other sneaker.

- Tight jeans inside: They're rock 'n' Roll! 🤘
- They're practically slippers, so you can whip them on quickly too!

I think a penny loafer with a suit is a bad look in general. Maybe for summer at informal events or at a resort, but never for business or a wedding: those need oxford cap toes, or wing tips for a less formal business suit.
Yeah. I hate penny loafer and shes on point about white sneakers....black for me.
With a suit? Too casual. Completely fine with business casual.
Penny loafers with a suit is not as bad as sneakers with a suit. Sneakers should never ever be worn with a suit. Even a plain white or black sneaker is a no no.

I agree with most of the rating. But the color of an oxford, penny loafer etc. has a lot to say for versatility. Recommend dark brown as it is the most versatile. Thanks for the video! :D
Agreed. Black oxfords outside a conservative office just look too businessy and wrong. Brown is perfect color for social oxfords.
Very good round up and categorization on men's shoes!
For me: The tasseled loafer, especially the leather one shown, definitely, imo, ranks above the penny in formality. I would put them in the "A" category. (You also have the tassel -skirt loafer; the pinch-tassel, which I would put a 1/2 step down with the pennies)
The leather Chelsea boot was worn by that ever classy and very well dressed guy John Steed of Avenger fame....should be in "A" category.

Jordan 1s should be the only S or A tier
"Oxford, not brogues" Kingsman films taught me that, Courtney showed me why
Excellent assessment...in my opinion. I must confess to owning a pair of Timberland work boots, but they are strictly used for WORK like landscaping around the house, remodeling, venturing out in a storm, etc. I have owned three pair in 45 continuous years and find them highly durable for the price. One thing that makes me curious; which type of shoe would be the most difficult to overcome/unsee if worn by someone you were meeting on a first or second date? I really like this ranking, but I would've put the black sneaker on a higher tier, like a C tier or even an B tier. The black sneaker is a really solid option when you are a sneaker type of person who doesn't like the feeling of wearing shoes in general. It is true that it doesn't stand up too much outside a monochromatic look, but if you keep them clean, they can look kind off like a minimalistic black shoes, but much more confortable. Also if its a leather sneaker it gives them shine and the ability to be easy to clean. You can wear black sneakers with almost any outfit.

I have simple cowboy boots and I always get compliments. When a guy wears white sneakers I think he is into real estate or a drug dealer cause he doesn't get dirty or work with his hands.
I got a chelsea for dress up
I tend to wear brown leather boat shoes in summer and black leather Chelsea boots in winter. The main reason is I work in people's houses where I need to look both smart, but also have a practical shoe and be able to go between inside and outside with an easy slip on/off. That said, penny loafers could work easily as well. Service boots would be annoying because I'd keep having to do up laces.
If your lawyer wears square toes, just go ahead and plead guilty. 😂
Agree with you Courtney regarding the service boot. I own 2 pairs and they’re extremely versatile.
@@martintanz9098 Agreed.
I'm a truck driver and have listened to a ton of Courtney's videos while driving. I actually watched this one and I really appreciate being able to see her facial expressions. Her voice is so calm that her eyes lighting up is kind of surprising and engaging.
Service boots are my all time favorite. I have a truman java wax flesh, red wing iron ranger, whites mp sherman and a thursday captain.
Saying this as an owner of 50 boots
chukkas were an issued boot for British forces in North Africa in WW2. a.k.a. a service boot
When the cowboy was asked why he was wearing sneakers he said that he didn't want everyone to think that he was just another truck driver.
Jordan 1, 3, 4, 11, and 12 for the right time and place.
Courtney, I'm a podiatrist and I've never been so engaged by any video. I would give most shoes the same rankings +/- one tier level. Some comments:
Penny loafers: the ones in the pic look sharp but this is what boys wear in first grade until they learn to tie shoelaces. B
Tassel loafers: too flamboyant. C
White sneakers: the shoe of the 2020s.
Chuck Taylor's are overrated, I guess if you want to make a deliberate effort to look spontaneous. C
Jordans: too expensive, lousy arch support, not even great for basketball. Unless you're in high school, it's a D.
Vans: another shoe I've never seen a high school graduate wear. D
Dress sneakers: I bought a pair, most uncomfortable shoes I own. Definitely makes a statement. They look nice enough for an unserious formal event, like an evening spring/summer outing. C
Timbs: shoe of the 2010s. I had a pair of brown timberland oxfords from podiatry school that looked great and stood up to the snow. They lasted years, I miss them. Boots are very practical. B
Crocs: your remarks are on point, I hate them for patients. F
Hey dudes: squishy and comfy, maybe a good recovery shoe, could see these in a D or F tier.
@@jward3961you can't work a real job in timbs lol
I tend to lean more towards darks and understated looks and I honestly can’t think of anything in my closet that white shoes wouldn’t clash with
White shoes only between May 15 and September 15!
White shoes, we call them the Ibuprofin 800s !
I enjoy hearing Courtney’s opinion, she is very down to earth sort of a gal!
How do you feel about New Balances? Worn by models in London and dads in Ohio
I bought a bunch of boots from Thursday last winter but don't wear them in the summer now. Do you wear boots in the summer?
@@tastybrownie7448 yes I do. Danner Crafter composite toe boots for work. Salomon Quest 4d Forces boots for outside of work.
@@Front-Toward-Enemy Even during the hot summer? What kinds of pants do you wear with them outside of work?
@@tastybrownie7448 yes, I guess working outside in South Carolina has conditioned my body to it. Just don’t wear cotton socks. Wear wool socks. Merino wool if you can afford it. For pants, it depends on what im doing.
Hey courtney, what about wingtip allen edford dress shoes? Is that ranked the same as an oxford dress shoe essentially?
Love your take! Yes, white sneakers are for little boys. Adult men should not be wearing these. They are worse than Hey Dudes.
If the movie kings man taught me anything it’s “oxfords not brogues” 😂
Courtney, you are a star! Not only will this help a man look good in every scenario, it could save him some serious money on shoes.
I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on other elements of men's style. Especially for men who don't fit into what society deems perfection. Such as the tall, lanky guy, or the short and stout man.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
Let's create the next "Ultimate Tier List" video for watches, shall we?
Growing up in Chicago and skated growing up. Lots of street wear and skateboard/hipster style around. Definitley appriciate the different point of view, now that I moved out of state.
I would add moc toe boots, Jodhpur boots, hiking boots, duck boots, athletic shoes, espadrilles, bit loafers, Venetian loafers and sandals
I didn't realise until I read this comment but running shoes and flip flops are two huge categories of shoes Courtney missed.
I'm 50 years old. Never ever had a chick notice my shoes lol😂😂😂
@@dang75790 oh really? 😂😂 I quite like more unusual sometimes alternative styles and am always sussing out what others are wearing, both men and women. I guess that those who care, care. And those who don’t, don’t. Each to their own. 🙃
Quite interesting though because for quite a lot of women (not all) shoes can become a whole topic of conversation but I’ve never heard men discuss shoes with each other…unless they work in fashion I guess or are sneakerheads.
Hence why I was intrigued by this video. Would be interesting to hear a man organise his preference for female shoes as a point of comparison. 🤔
Whatever you like you should wear that. Always wonderful to see people being unapologetically themselves!
You are very kind… Anyone that wears Jordans, might I suggest growing up? also vans, if you’re over the age of 23 and you’re wearing those outside the house, you need some help.
vans is iconic bro
As a guy who lives in the city and takes the train into the office, the dress sneaker is key.
I like how every casual shoes (like vans and Jordan’s) are considered C-D tier. Like do guys always have to dress up and looks pretentious? I guess men can’t even look casual or even think about it.
It’s because grownups don’t wear Vans or Jordans. Casual shoes are regular sneakers for adults.
so I wear skateboard shoes and im 26. full grownup. guess i'm not anymore lol
@@jim6070 umm….Those are regular sneakers… lol
@@alexlopez5800 No they are not. lol. They have a specific sport purpose. Regular sneakers are similar to the all white that she mentioned in the video. Now if you are going skating or shooting hoops, then of course wear them.
@@Raiugabe Yep, obviously it's a choice to wear shoes like that all the time, but they won't look good to the opposite sex, which is what this video is about.
I wear western boots a lot and also penny loafers and many different style of shoes I'm an Alabama boy, you have a wonderful channel God bless you
I live near the beach in Florida so I will continue to wear flip flops daily and not care what women think about it 😎
I forgot to put flip flops on here! 😱
The flip flop. No self respecting man should ever wear flip flops when not on the beach or at a pool.
Same here in Southern California. Stop the flip flop slander
In Australia we call them thongs and they are part of our religion
Good ranking! Yes, more videos using tier list for the remaining clothing pieces (shirts, pants, coats, accessories). Thank you.
Personally I can't stand smooth top grain leather cap toes on casual footwear.
I’m a 40 year man an I’m thinking about those Vans. I think the all white Vans be real comfortable wearing in a white van.
These are all my Nike shoes Acronym Vapormax, Acronym Prestos, Nike SB Zebras and BB Hyper Adapt. None of these shoes mentioned.
This was such a hysterical roast session! Courtney, you've got some comedic chops!!
Red Wing > Timberland for quality work boots.
Agree!
Pretty much agree with your ALL of your ranking and good taste.
Thank you my friend! 🥰
Derby’s are more versatile than oxfords because oxfords are limited to formal situations.
Also cowboy boots above Chelsea and chukka boots is wild.
I can agree with most of this list. BUT, my Thursday and Cole Haan dress sneakers get loads of compliments---and they're comfortable!
Gotta disagree with you on the suede Chelsea boot. Shoulda been an A class pick IMO.
I always liked the simple and classic look shoes. Like black Converse. I also like the new recommendations that she provides. Time to try something new, so thank you.
You lost me putting jordans in the C & D tier wtf
Mom watching over my shoulder: what is she talking about?
Me: styles of shoes
Mom: Is she going to show us any?
