We all told them not to call it the Wii U before release. Nintendo even thought about it for a brief second, but moved ahead. Consumers and parents thought it was an add-on for the Wii (think Sega CD) and statistically add-ons sell like garbage and so did the Wii U. Then again, maybe Nintendo needed to suffer a little so they'd get their act together. The company can literally do nothing for the 38 years before going bankrupt.

One of my favorite game commercials of all time was the one for Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. My family inadvertently recorded it during Christmastime of 1993 as it was aired between classic Christmas specials. It's a surreal ad, rapidly cutting between gameplay of the game and a guy in a silver space suit sitting in a chair in what looks like a paneled wind tunnel, with projections of the action on screen being cast on his visor. It had one of the best lines I remember from a commercial, "Why go to the next level, when you can go light years beyond?!" And at the end of the ad, the helmet the guy was wearing opens up and he has transformed into a fox.

2000's advertisement were something else in general.
It's like the XTREME of the 90s fused with the surrealism of 2010s internet humor before that was a thing. Truly the best era of ads. The 2000s were the only era that if a time traveler screwed something up and Salad Fingers became a mascot of something, nobody would have questioned it.
