Speaking of always approaching, I used to have a reoccurring nightmare of constantly being chased by spiders and if I didn't keep moving they would catch up. No matter where I was or what I did they would come find me.

I have casadastraphobia. It's the fear of falling into the sky. Completely irrational and it started when i hung by my knees from the monkey bars in elementary school, looking down into the sky. I have a similar fear, just instead of falling into the sky it's floating up into the sky like a helium balloon, no-one being able to catch me, and just slowly drifting higher and higher contemplating my inevitable death in the earth's upper atmosphere. Yeah, don't ask.
It came about after repeat episodes of night terrors I had when I was five-ish where I felt like I was floating up and up, and had to hold onto my bedposts for dear life.

I had a science teacher in high school who had a phobia of cotton balls. At first I thought it was stupid, but then he explained why it freaked him out. When he was a kid a large part of his finger/thumb was cut off in an accident. (they were able to sew it back on and it looked fine now) But what they used to stop bleeding at first was cotton balls. So now when he sees people playing with or picking apart the cotton he associates it with the memory as well as raw flesh being picked apart.

Anxiety is a real problem and with the right help it can be controlled. these thoughts can feel weird and unreasonable but they most likely have their bases on our childhood experiences and stuff, and can become a real struggle if left unattended. This fear crippled me so much that I wouldn’t go to the loo at night - Problem was, I was 13 at the time. It never fully went away. @jacksonlaframboise6257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Lmfao yeaaah. I’m more afraid of the alerts than the actual warning. At 5am, one went off. As an adult man, I almost cried. Than I read it and it said “local power plant has started showing signs of a meltdown (something like that). Seek shelter. This is not a drill.” My fear didn’t increase. And I felt relieved when the alarm stopped making sounds and went back to bed……it was an error at the plant. So, confirmed: I’m more afraid of an alarm sound than dying in a nuclear explosion. People were late for work that day. Some could not come in. My one coworker was already in a different continent. She was like “oh. It was a fluke? I’m like 5 hours away….can’t make it.” Understandable. Actually, a completely rational response to the situation, given the information provided. Even more rational given, the town I was in at the time was like 10 kilometres away from said power plant. But, yeah. Also, in elementary school, my mark would drop by like 30% in classes with a fire alarm in them, because I would spend most of the class with my ears covered. So yeah…..I get this. Funnily enough, I’m a musician/ producer now, and I really fuck with sound design, so it’s got me wondering if their is some correlation between general emotional ties to noise, and musical comprehension as a whole. Cuz it makes some sense. If you feel fear greater around sounds, you may feel other things more as well. So like, anybody who relates to alarm fear, do ya play an instrument or something?

This is how phobia related humor should work instead of the mean spirited stuff you see all too often. I love this self aware “man our brains can be so weird” approach. It can be quite cathartic. My mom once knew someone terrified of large leaves to the point he’d break out in cold sweats. Someone also mentioned fear of pregnant women. I know someone who is very whigged out by the idea of pregnancy so was quite happy to learn she’s very unlikely to ever get pregnant due to a physical thing.
Not quite a phobia, but I have anxiety and for so long used to get very antsy whenever Nightwing would show up in a comic I was reading, especially unexpectedly. I think it’s largely because I heavily associate him with my brother who I even affectionately call my Nightwing and have saved as Nightwing in my phone and the image I have of the character is just generally really particular and really important to me so I would get quite anxious worrying something might ruin him. I’d legit feel all tingly from sheer nerves. What makes it really weird is that I’d only get like that if he was Nightwing. If he showed up as Robin or Grayson Batman or something else I was fine. But if he was Nightwing I’d be anxious. It also only happened with main universe comics. Nothing happened if I saw him in an elseworld comic or in a show or video game. It was by far the most oddly insanely specific part of my anxiety disorder for years. Eventually it just kinda…. stopped. Still not sure why it suddenly stopped but I’m not exactly complaining. My anxiety is usually pretty vague and just “what if SOMETHING goes wrong” but this one bit of it was abnormally specific and direct.

Similar to the one at 7:50, i'm scared of sudden silence. There's a tv show in germany called Bernd Das Brot, and the channel that aired it would only air like three different episodes a year, and it would only play them shortly before 8pm, and it would only loop them, which already freaked me out. By that I mean it played *the same* episode back to back over and over again, until 8pm, where it would just switch to a screen saying "We'll be back at 6am!" And that's it. It just went from a piece of bread and a robot doing funny things to entertain children to just silence.

A while back, I was concerned that I would develop a fear of bats (I love bats). I told my therapist that it was really important to me that I didn't develop such a phobia, and she suggested doing a bunch of research on them. Humans naturally fear the unknown, after all, so the more you know about something, the less scary it will be.
I don't know if that helps at all, but this made me so sad that I really wanted to do whatever I can to try and help.

I always liked clowns. Any clowns, even those, who are deliberately scary. And I fear that someday it will change.
But it still makes me really sad that a lot of people are afraid of them or hate them. Even my good friend was once so scared by a guy in a creepy clown costume (he was advertising a scary attraction in the middle of a well lit busy street) that she wanted to beat him up. In my country you can't just become a clown. You have to graduate from a circus college first. And it's really hard to get accepted to. So all the clowns here are just people who devoted their lives to making people a bit happier, to make them laugh, to teach them how to overcome every hardship with humor and a smile on their faces. And all they get for that is minimum wage and hatred. All because of the media and pranksters who taught people to be afraid of them or hate them. They so don't deserve it... I don't even know any other person who feels that way about clowns. Everyone I know hate them or scared of them. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry.

At 2:46 as Matt read... "I had recurring nightmares about the yodeling"... I automatically said out loud, without thinking about it, "the yodeling mountain climber from the Price is Right coming to get me"
Exactly word for word what the guy on Reddit posted. I was listening to this in the background and wasnt even reading it on the screen.
My best theory is me and this 'BRB_Heartattack' Redittor person must have been reincarnated from people who died in an alternate timeline where Yodeling Mountain Climber (YMC for short) gained too much power too quickly and couldnt be stopped.
    RIP that timeline.
Slightly unrelated to this, but in that timeline Bob Barker lost his testicals in a horrific dog mauling incident when he was 14, and then again when he was 25, and it's widely believed that's why our timelines Bob Barker always wanted people to neuter their pets. It was Bob's way to get his revenge and regain some control in his life. While this is not necessary information, I hope it gives some people, and animals, closure.

I find watching this oddly therapeutic to watch.
It makes me feel like everyone has some weird thoughts or fears like that and we just never say them out loud to people because a) they're weird and you don't want to be judged and b) sometimes you forget about them or they're just really subconscious and you forget they are weird. But deep down we're all just fighting against ourselves and the weird and unhelpful connections our brains make.

The hill merged with a round about and I managed to merge flawlessly into moving traffic.

So i have no idea how to explain this in english but ima try.
My mum once drove up a 40° ish upward facing ramp into some mall parking lot with like 4 floors. These ramps were maybe 10m long before turning around a corner to the next part of the parking lot, but one time, when we were basically almost at the top, my mums car went off on its own. So, while we felt the car go down and gain momentum, paired with that tickling in your stomach that you know from elevators, I watched my mum try to turn on the car in panic while almost dropping the car key. Needless to say, if she wouldn't have made it in time, the car would have hit the wall and broke or even gone through the wall due to the speed (on the 4th floor).
She cried afterwards from the stress.

    -carpet beetles
    slightly more absurd ones:
-being afraid that Rasputin's stretchy arm from the movie Anastasia would come out of my toilet's drain while i was sitting on the toilet and grab my ass
-that slenderman would be inside any dark room i walked by, so i always averted my eyes
-the fear that if i posted my art online, someone would impersonate me, claim to be me, do a good enough job that everyone would believe them over me, and then get constantly accused of stealing the art i made
-fear that my deceased relatives are watching over me, even in the shower and other private situations
-fear that random deceased people are watching me, despite the fact that they would have no reason to

Any other interpretation, as far as I know, has no scientific backing, and, if you are willing to consider them, you would be forced to give equal value to the idea that anything is possible, and therefore you don't know anything at all about anything and all knowledge could in theory be incorrect. And for obvious reason, we don't consider that. And science does the most consistent job explaining things in consensus reality, which is why that is the base assumption.
Tl;dr, you just stop existing, like being asleep without dreams, or what it was like before you were born. Unless you decide to not use logic and science to determine the probable answer, but in that case, you have cast aside the assumption of consensus reality, and have much more pressing concerns when it comes to uncertainty.

IDK if this counts since it's part of my mental illness, but i have OCD. And one of my compulsive behaviors is that i need to walk through doors in the same spot on my way both in and out (e.g. if i'm leaning slightly to the left on the way in, i need to lean slightly to the right on the way out). If i don't do this, i fear i'll slip through a wormhole into another dimension that's almost exactly like my own. This isn't scary in and of itself, but because i'm scared my friends and my cat would miss me and be upset that i've gone away. The severity of this fear fluctuates, but gets worse when i'm stressed. I'm still deeply ashamed of admitting this, but i'm trying to talk about it more. And this thread kinda helped. So-- thank you.
P.S. If you ever do a part two, yeah, i'm totally cool with this being read. Maybe hearing it in the voice of "the British guy who reads" will help make it less scary XD .

during the ages of 3-8 years old i was terrified of mannequins, to the point where whenever i had to go past one in a store i had to look away and move past as fast as i could. i was scared of them coming to life or something and coming after me to kill me. this only got worse after i started getting reoccurring nightmares about them chasing me around various places like malls, the street, grass fields, even my own house. i still vividly remember some of these dreams they were absolutely terrifying, the way they waddled around at 10 mph as i had to run from my life. i'm over that fear by now but there are still some moments where i see a weird looking mannequin and i get really freaked out, not to the extent that i did when i was little though lol

If you ever decide to watch Doctor Who, it would be in your best interest to skip the first episode of the rebooted series. Very unfriendly mannequins.

!! Same! Mine stemmed a bit from watching doctor who as a kid. I had vivid memories of em chasing me around part of my home town as a kid so I got really freaked out walking home at night from our local youth club because of the nightmares. Thankfully I've grown out of the fear but not the "what if" mindset when near em

I have a few reasonable phobias, things like a fear of heights, but my strangest phobia is…ice. Specifically, slipping on ice, along with otherwise walking on any other particularly slippery surfaces.
I’m not exactly fragile, I will not keel over or break a hip. I’m a young adult with no need to be as petrified as I am about falling down. But somehow, ice and snow just wreck me emotionally and mentally. It’s specifically the sensation of falling that makes me so damn terrified. Not the pain of hitting the ground or anything, apparently I can take that, but the falling part? That makes me a despondent wreck.
I was out with my friends once and they got to see my reaction first-hand. I didn’t even need to step on anything, just *seeing* the snow made me stop at the edge like there was a forcefield stopping me. It took a lot of coaxing and support from my awesome friends just to get me past the thin layer of snow on the path, and even after sitting down to a meal in a restaurant, I was visibly shaken for hours after. I even cried into one friend’s shoulder because I just couldn’t get a hold of myself. You’d think I’d been traumatized. And all of this happened because there was a path with a thin, easy-to-pass layer of snow over it, that I did not slip on, and the whole time I was wearing the perfect boots that had tons of traction. The mere idea of slipping messed me up that much.

No but like that makes a lot of sense though? I love ice skating but I've fallen multiple times, and ur right about the pain not being the worst, it's just the falling part that's scary. One minute you're going along and the next minute WHAM you're on your butt. Its just so sudden lolll 😭

I have a fear of ice/snow after I fell over when skiing and split my lip(and chipped a tooth)..it wasn’t too bad but there was so much blood (which I’m also scared of) and I had to get stitches and get the chipped tooth fixed (I’m also scared of dentists). Still got the scar.

To be fair though, they are designed to instill fear and action as a response to them. The attention tone in emergency alerts was specifically chosen because it is very grading and noticeable on the human ear.

0:58 I can actually relate to this one. Whenever I was younger and we visited a city with tall buildings, I couldn't help but get this extremely uneasy feeling when I looked upwards like I was just going to suddenly fall away from the ground. I also had a chronic fear of heights so I think this goes hand-in-hand with that.
