The Boxer Rebellion is amazing to think about, looking back at it. 7 nations, most of which are enemies, united in the effort to defeat this threat to the Qing. Then 15 years later, all 7 of these nations would fight one another.

Props for using "55 Tage in Peking" the German version of the "55 days at Peking". It's easily the best version in my opinion. Maybe it's because German makes anything sound serious and weighty, while the other versions have that campy feel I just can't shake, the German rendition sounds like an actual military hymn or marching song.

    • @hildegunstvonmythenmetz6095
      @hildegunstvonmythenmetz6095 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +133

The German version is also far less chipper and mocking in the text, it doesn’t even really describe the conflict, it‘s just a recollection of the death and destruction that befell everyone there. I find this not only poignant, but also very respectful, since it acknowledges how terrible this war was for everyone, not just the germans. It’s basically a lament of even having to go to war in the first place, and an honoring of everyone who died for their country. This is why I love my countries‘ soldier songs, and why I hate that so many of them turn out to be made by Nazis.

Honestly it wasn’t the lack of modernization on the part of the Qing. Quite frankly it was weakness of the Qing themselves and the disloyalty of their vassals.
You don’t explode into waring states from a lack of reform. Typically in that situation a nation explodes into a two sided civil war between the current establishment and a coalition of the various anti-establishment factions who proceed to sort out their grievances later. This is typically because the central government retains enough power to crush them all individually.
To get waring states requires a weak central authority allowing its local governments to grow their own power and autonomy before staging an open revolt. The central authority then calls in its other local governments who rebel in turn as the whole thing then explodes. The central authority is then rendered impotent as the various waring factions all claim to be the legitimate inheritors of the central governments power.
To be idealistic if the Qing had asked the western powers for help in modernizing it’s government, military, and industry in exchange for wealth in a similar vein to the Meiji restoration it might have worked.
It certainly would’ve been better than declaring war on _literally_ all of the worlds great powers for the sake of pride. Especially since that fight just ended up accelerating their collapse.

@@Snp2024this is generally considered modern period proper.
Actually late renaissance is early colonial times are often considered early modern or proto modern. This is secondary too what ever main period though. Like Victorian times would be considered earlyish modern too but not THE Modern era which is like 1900 until the information age/ maybe including the current information age, also maybe you considered the 1950s the atomic age. Idk many history books go by different systems. Like in their own book in time lines. I think basically it depends on what you mean. The modern era I think its offical near the start. A modern era, its definitely. Personally I have seen some like to consider the 1700s the start of truely early modern era because metal munition armor was still common. It still worked actually against bullets from range but guns got so much cheaper and quicker with flintlock systems you could buy 10 for the price of okay armour agaisnt bullets.
And everything before is proto modern.
So Napoleanic warfare was early modern for example but not modern warfare maybe idk it kinda confuses me. Basically my only advice is don't be strict on era definitions.

She was not perfect, especially given the Boxer Rebellion debacle and the later Sino-Japanese War (cannot blame her fully for the latter given even Western experts were certain Qing would win with ease - indeed if conflict over Korea had started a few years prior Qing would most likely have won based on the journals of Takashima Kaemon who had close connection to Meiji officials and bureaucrats, and is famous for his divination practices that affirm the policy of Meiji Elite.)

I’ll be honest, the battle of Peking is like the battle of Gallipoli, as they had underestimated the Chinese forces which made the campaign drag on, same thing with the Ottomans

The boxer rebellion wasnt the first modern international intervention, Crete was an earlier international intervention, during the 1890's it was briefly ran by a council admirals from the 6 great powers following the ottomans trying to reassert greater control over the territory

Well, first of all, thanks for this interesting video and Merry Christmas to everyone! ❤
Next, as a high school science student from China with average history grades (and not very good at translating historical terms), I think this video does focus more on the interesting side.
As one of the struggles to save the nation from peril, the Boxer Rebellion, although it had a strong anti-imperialist and patriotic tendency and demonstrated the spirit of sacrifice of us, the Chinese people, who were not afraid of the strongest of the strong, was extremely obvious in its blind xenophobic behaviours, not to mention that it lacked the leadership of the advanced class and was unable to stop China from sliding into the abyss of semi-colonialism.
Also, I'm not quite sure if this video should mention the German Imperial Minister to China who was associated with the invasion of China by the Eight-Nation Alliance.
Then, the Eight-Nation Alliance also helped to suppress the Boxer Rebellion (at that time, it was also known as “拳匪”), and the eight countries that made up the Eight-Nation Alliance, together with Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium, a total of eleven countries, coerced the Qing Dynasty into signing the Treaty of Xinchou, which is a hellmark of China's modern history: it marked China's complete descent into the abyss of a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society.
Finally, I would like to mention one more thing: as you can see, there are eight “王” (Kaiser, king, etc.) in the upper part of “琵琶琴瑟”, which is actually from a couplet of that time:
    琵琶琴瑟,八大王王王在上 (from a non-native Chinese speaker)
魑魅魍魉,四小鬼鬼鬼犯边 (from a native Chinese speakers)
So I use this to remind myself to learn more and remember history.

Question, you use the term semi-colonialism to describe what China endured. However, in the West, we only have the term colonialism and don’t have an ontological distinction besides non-colonialism and colonialism. Instead, most if not all colonial ventures and policies are simply labeled as forms of colonialism. What in the Chinese perspective creates an impression of semi-colonialism rather than colonialism?

@@redmonkey4351 Thank you for your question! Actually, we have a term called semi-colonial and semi-feudal (the official Marxist description of China in the late Qing dynasty); and I then tried to use a word with a similar structure, i.e. semi-colonialism. I apologise for not conveying it clearly. Further, at that time (around 1900), the Qing government still existed, but it was just a tool for various imperialist countries to rule China. I guess that's why we call it semi-colonial and semi-feudal (i.e 半殖民地半封建).

    • @redmonkey4351

@@PipaQinse233 No need to apologize! With what you wrote, it's not your fault that I misunderstood. It's simply a case that western education tends to just focus on clear-cut, black and white "this is colonized and this isn't colonized" and "this is a colonizer and this isn't a colonizer." So I was asking from that perspective, not remembering that colonialism often went hand in hand with domestic political developments in lands where European (and Japanese) colonies were established. A similar thing happens in India, where people in the west think that India was blanket fully controlled by the British, but it was a multi-layered system that developed over time to envelope and integrate the local ruling elites who wanted to maintain or expand their own local power. So yeah, semi-colonialism makes a great deal of sense in this case!

@@redmonkey4351 This is a Marxist term that Lenin created (in 1901) to describe Chinese society. It saw the feudal monarch as a partner of foreign colonizers, thus providing legitimacy to the revolutionary movement that overthrew the monarchy. It's understandable that westerners don't know much about Marxism-Leninism.

Highly recommend everyone go read Boxers and Saints, a two part graphic novel written by Gene Luen Yang about this conflict. You get the perspective of the boxers as well as the perspective of Chinese Christians at the time.
