A peculiar fact is that Nogi single-handedly managed to Make Seppuku Great Again. At the time, it was widely regarded in Meiji Japan as old-fashioned and belonging in the country's barbaric past. With a war hero like Nogi doing it, public perception of seppuku changed drastically. The story of the 2nd russian Pacific Fleet is one of the funniest journeys from hell type stories.
And when you read about it, you then think to the modern Russian navy, and you think not much has changed.

What’s crazy about this era is that an entire squadron could actually disappear and there’s next to nothing a nation could do about it

The story of the Second Pacific Squadron, if you don't know it, is amazing and practically a Monty Python skit. This video doesn't go into it much but if you have the time, after watching you should read up on or watch a video dedicated to it.

I find it funny that while the second Pacific's squadron is being portrayed as incompetent in this video, it's still nowhere near the reality of how much of a disaster that expedition was.

The Emperor’s Army, a million strong, set out to punish the powerful savages of the North.
On the battlefield, in the midst of the sieges, the bodies piled up like mountains.

Though we few return today in Triumph.
