I would like to append something here I may return to later, but I focus a lot on Anthy's agency in this video in a way that crosses over into victim blaming, though that was not my intent. I should have spent more time emphasizing Anthy's horrible abuse and empathizing with her character. It could be misleading and it doesn't do full justice to her character.
My intention with the discussion here was to emphasize Anthy's agency as opposing the self-image of herself as the "Rose Bride" and that Anthy is in fact a real person deserving of love and empathy, not the doll she pretends to be to numb her pain. This self delusion ties in with the interpretation of yellow I discuss which is why I emphasized it, but it was too one-sided in its portrayal. Thanks for watching and reading my ramblings.

I'd like to point out that while Anthy is rather manipulative, most of it is due to the fact that she still wants to see her brother as the prince he used to be. Anthy knows that in truth, Akio is no longer Dios, but she still chooses to believe that because she feels that it's her fault he was turned into this so she deserves to suffer.
I mean...think about the last episode. Utena almost freed her and yet she still chose to go along with Akio's plan.
    Why?
Because she was afraid of the outside world and still deeply cared for her brother. Anthy was in a lot of pain as the rose bride, but because it was what she was familiar with, she chose to instead obey her brother. Abuse victims often do not know what to do and any lashing out against their tormenters has to be passive-aggressive.
Yes, it was Anthy's choice to turn herself into a witch, but she did so as a last resort to save Dios' life. Despite not being naive like Nanami, Anthy still is under the false notion that the princely brother she admired will return someday and she only is able to actually leave him when she realizes that Akio condones something Dios would never be okay with: Utena taking his place.
Yes, there was a LOT of jealousy towards the princesses Dios saved, but like Nanami, Anthy truly did adore her brother, admiring his chivalry. Akio refusing to save her when Utena will and Utena essentially taking the fall makes her realize that the person she idolized is dead, replaced by a womanizer. This signals to Anthy that she has to move on and because Utena was the one who gave her this realization, her first action naturally is to find Utena.
As for Anthy's connection to Nanami, I fully agree. One of Nanami's focus episodes even lampoons this into the viewer's head when Nanami thinks she's not related to Touga so he won't pay attention to her anymore and she winds up having to stay at Akio's house (thus witnessing what goes on between him and Anthy.)
Also, like Anthy, Nanami eventually comes to the realization that she has to move on (though in Nanami's case, this is only when she duels Utena) and this eventually pays off as she is able to find a way to still remain useful to her brother (by providing him with tea after kendo practice.) They truly are two sides of the same coin and seem to parallel each other as Nanami is openly aggressive while Anthy can only be passive-aggressive.

Elyse Walker i was delighted to notice that nanami doesnt cling to touga anymore in the second to last episode when they were making BBQ and waiting for the duel of Revolution to end. she was there, and touga was there, but she was doing her own thing, separate from him, without ever adressing him (touga and saionji interact in this scene and are clearly paired in their reactions to jurys story about drowned boy so its not like they just didnt have a time or excuse to make nanami interact with touga), but neither does she pointedly ignores him. it was just natural.

I agree with the Victim Blaming commenter, but I have a little more to add. Anthy genuinely has SOME care for Utena this early in the show. You literally showed the scene where Anthy imagines Utena sitting with her when Togua has her. Anthy's alone and having these feelings. I think it's pretty clear that Anthy wants to push Utena away because she can't get close to people like you said, but yet she still cares for her even if she doesn't want to admit it to herself.

While I do agree with 90% of this video? I honestly dont think anthy can choose to leave. Abuse isn't that simple so i can't agree with ya there, especally considering this has been going on for YEARS! Utena was able to crack through sure but she wasnt able to "save" anthy. She was able to give anthy the courage and stregnth to save herself, begin to heal, and find her own support group that dosent include akio.

      @Elektrochoke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

At the same time Anthy herself doesn’t see her worth anymore and has lived this situation multiple times and has seen nothing but people seeing her as their own idea rather than herself. By the time Tougas duel happens, Utena still only sees her as her princess to save and believes blindly in the myth of the prince. Anthy doesn’t believe in princes anymore because she’s really broken in ways we don’t know yet.

23:56 being in an abusive situation like the rose bride isn't as simple as being able to stop anytime she wants to. Anthy must do whatever her engaged wants, but that doesn't mean she has no humanity or that she's an object

    • @CrabeVideos
      @CrabeVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

I did oversimplify Anthy's situation, however I would disagree with one of your points. Anthy does not have to do what her engaged wants, she just acts like it to further her brother's agenda. I don't think there is anything supernatural about the fact she does what people tell her to, rather she uses her supposed subservience to Akio's advantage. I would have to go back and watch the series again to see if there is a specific time she defies someone's orders, but she certainly acts against her groom's wishes behind their back. Also I wrote another comment just a bit ago in response to someone else on this video where I talk a bit more about Anthy if that interests you at all.
      Thanks for the comment!

@@arottedfruit Yes clearly she has been horribly abused and manipulated to act the way she does, but what I was saying is that she is a human being that has the capacity to make her own choices (not saying this is easy). Several of the duelists (including Utena at points) really believe that Anthy is actually under some magical compulsion to do what her groom commands. Anthy uses that misconception to Akio's advantage.

8:47 I would like to point out that Touga does love Nanami,, the director confirmed that Touga was sexually abused by their father, ( just like in the movie) and that Touga let his hair grow longer, to make sure his father would leave Nanami alone, since he was starting to look more and more like a man, I believe Touga has some un-deserved resentment towards Nanami because of that but that by the end of the day he does love his sister. (and for once not THAT way)

"Namami is unaware of the larger forces" maybe in season one but by the middle of season two she's honestly one of the first to catch on, at least in my interpretation. But she is one of the first to say something's fishy in season 3. She immediately distrusts Akio, which probably stirs her need to investigate Touga because she sees him in Akio as well.
Great video though, I hope you make more!

  • @ashleylieberg5033

Your analysis is very well crafted, especially with regard to the cinematography pieces. There is, however, something I'd like to bring up. The way you treat Anthy smacks a little of blaming the victim to me, and I'd like to say why.
Anthy is presented in your video as being fully in control of herself, and therefore also fully culpable for any and every action she takes. I disagree with this, as she is a victim of what we're to understand is centuries of emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse. Even if the decision is hers to change Dios, her relationship thereafter with Akio (who I will remind you is significantly older than her) cannot be seen as anything but the abuse of a minor on multiple levels. Shifts in behavior and judgment in all victims of abuse is well documented, most especially in minors. I submit as my first point that, as a result of her abuse, Anthy is not fully responsible for her every action. Certainly she is for some, such as her torments of Nanami, but not all as you seem to suggest.
In addition, I would like to say that I initially had a hard time understanding why you and a few others I've met interpret Anthy this way. I wonder if it is not that perhaps something fundamental of the show has been lost in your interpretations.
You and others have established that a theme present in this show is illusion and/or deception. Falsehoods and unquestioned beliefs form a significant portion of the story's backbone. You have also established unequal power balance in relationships to be something explored in Utena. What I am referring to in this point is less the relationship between two specific characters, and more the relationship between the two primary fairy tale archetypes the show relies on (because Utena does, from the outset, establish itself as working based on the concept of a fairy tale). I am referring to the Prince-Princess dynamic. Whomever fills the role of the Prince, while supposedly seeking to save the Princess, also maintains control of all the power in the relationship while leaving the Princess none. This is not always an intentional act, the way it is with Akio, but unintentional by virtue of the dynamic itself. A true Prince, which Utena strives to be, can save a Princess from all but one thing: himself. In entering the Prince-Princess dynamic, the Princess is robbed of all agency and power by the laws of the dynamic as presented in fairy tales. Thus, the entire construct is hypocritical and doomed. This is why Utena, despite being as much the definition of a Prince as possible (with the exception of her gender identity) cannot save Anthy in the end if that message is to have any weight.
Having established that, I wonder if this is why you and some others have placed blame on Anthy that is undue: the Prince still holds sway in our reality. Women are coerced to be the ideal of a Princess, and men are pressured to fulfill the ideal of a Prince. Yet, if Dios was beginning to fail (and he was a being who appears to have been created specifically to fill that niche), then how can anyone succeed? In the end, Anthy takes the Swords of Hate in her brother's stead. This preserves his Pure Princeliness, or intended as much. I wonder if directing the blame to Anthy is any different than forcing her to suffer the Swords. She takes the blame on Akio's behalf while he and the ideal of the archetype he is associated with are protected. I believe this to be the case, and that the habit of people to direct blame to Anthy is the same socialized impulse to blame women for many things. Akio/Dios would then be yet another "innocent, unsuspecting, 'pure'" man deceived by the "manipulative evil" of a woman.
Well, that was more than two cents' worth, but I felt it was worth discussing. I hope that, even if you disagree, you at least enjoyed reading it.

I totally get where you're coming from. And it's not so much that I want to say that Anthy doesn't have choices so much as she can't bear all of the responsibility of the outcomes of choices she makes until she leaves Akio's influence.
Thank you for putting so much effort into a response!

I absolutely agree with your comment. I think I the video he is spot on about Utena and how she is using Anthy to become more like the prince archetype she desires to emulate, but I don't think that Anthy has nearly as much control over her choices, or at least that's what I got out of it. I don't think Anthy could simply choose to quit being the rose bride, because that would require her to become her true self, much like how in the end Utena realizes that she's not a prince. But I think a fundamental message of the show is that neither of them could have realized their true selves and become adults, and therefore left the dueling game, the rose bride, and Akio behind, without each other. Isn't that why at the end we see that all the other duelists remain at the academy while Anthy (and it is at least implied that Utena as well) can now leave the academy? I think Anthy can be very cruel to Utena and all the other characters, but I think it's because of Akio's control over her as her prince, rather than her cruelness being part of her true character, and I think that it only furthers the fact that Anthy and Utena both are victims of Akio and the Prince and Princess archetypes in society. That's why only Utena can save Anthy, because only by the end of it does Utena understand how manipulated Anthy was by Akio.
Also, I don't think the parallel between Nanami hurting her brother by throwing the cat in the river and Anthy keeping her brother to herself to save his life was that strong an argument, as Nanami is not attempting to do good by doing something wrong in the same way that Anthy is. I think this is another moment where I at least read Anthy as more of a victim than the video made her out to be. I mean, in that moment I think Anthy is seeing how the prince archetype isn't something that can really exist, but at least at that point she doesn't see any other option but to become the princess archetype herself in order to save Akio from it. But again, I think one of the main messages of Utena is that you cannot save someone from an archetype, from society's expectations, by putting on an archetype yourself to bare the brunt of it for the person you want to save.
Sorry for the super long comment, but I hope at least somebody finds it interesting!

I had written a really long response to the first comment, but it got deleted when I moved the channel to a different email account. This comment thread is really great though! My biggest regret with this video (besides doing it as my first) is how I wrote that section about Anthy's past. I gave a not great explanation for a very nuanced character and scene. I do see Anthy as a victim who isn't at fault for her various issues. However, what I was trying to say is that Anthy is the only one who can choose not to be the Rose Bride. It is not her fault she doesn't come to this conclusion on her own, but it is in the end her personal choice to leave as it only ever could be.
As far as the cat parallel thing I can see your argument, but I still think the visual throughline of Utena as cat has to have some meaning.
Thanks to all for the thoughtful comments!

I think you overlooked something important in this video. It may not seem like it but gold also plays a lot of key to character symbolism.
The color gold is cousin to the color yellow and is also associated with illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom. Gold is a precious metal that is associated with wealth, grandeur, and prosperity, as well as sparkle, glitz, and glamour.
In short, gold represents another side of yellow with a very key point - materialism. If Utena objectified Anthy, then it's gold that embodies this better than simple yellow.

Thanks for making this video! Agree with most of it though I've watched the anime around 3 times and never interpreted anthy as actually sleeping with dios when they were children. Thought it was her guarding him and tending to his wounds. I don't think their relationship turned sexual until a little while after she was stabbed with the swords of hate for the first time. Her being stabbed is what lead to the forming of akio/death of dios. Believe that all the akio and anthy sexual scenes are about him exercising control over her and keeping her in line as a shell of a person. She just does it because she loves him.
True Anthy has done some awful things, but the parallel to nanami and touga to akio and anthy explains everything to me. Touga was willing to take the relationship further for power and nanami was disgusted by it when it came down to it.

I loved this video so much, your point os view is very illuminating. Thanks so much for sharing it!
The explanation of how they used the yellow color is very interesting and I agree with basically all the point you made. Just one think I saw differently is that, in the part where Utena remember her time with Anthy and the yellow border appears, I'm not sure if the yellow was used to show jealously. I think it was used to represent innocence, since we have this connection with the yellow color and Utena's dress as a child (and youth can be interpreted as innocence). So, I understood that Utena has a very innocent feeling towards Anthy, and because of that she cannot see any trace of malice in her. Her naivete doesn't allow her to see that Anthy actually enjoys being the Rose Bride, so Utena can't believe what is happening when Anthy leaves with Touga. Of course, there is also the possibility that the color may mean both things: she is naive AND jealous. It makes a lot of sense too.
But anyway, I just wanted to share an other interpretation I had on this. This show is so great and you just made and great observation about it. Thanks again! This video is going to make me think for a long time now.

I just tore through all your Utena videos and I fucking love them all. I'm so glad someone out there is doing this incredibly important writing--excellent, excellent stuff.
I mostly focus on Homestuck right now, but I have a lot to say about Utena and how the eccentricities and similarities of both series (both center around the casts' escape from the absolute control of a Deific Patriarch, both have basically the entire cast be coded as lgbt by the end, too many others) come down in many ways to their common Gnostic influence.
It's something I want to write about eventually but honestly Homestuck has my hands incredibly full, so if you're interested feel free to let me know and I'd be happy to talk about it! It illuminates a lot of things about Akio and Anthy, the link between the concepts of Revolution and Apocalypse and their links to the Egg referenced by the Student Council/visually displayed as Dios' "Grave".
There is, in short, a Lot Of Stuff. Either way though I hope you keep making more videos like this, and that your channel gets more and more recognition. It definitely deserves it!

Despite watching this anime alot, I did not even think about them like this, I thought of them more as one trying to expose others and learning about the world around her Nanami and Anthy as the one who seems sure about the manipulative world around her, but not quite like this, this is amazing detail, also you almost laugh at Anthy calling her animals Nanami? 😆

Utena is not using Anthy to satisfy her princely aspirations. She genuinely cares for her and wants the best for her. You're viewing this from a male perspective, which is not appropriate for this situation.

Can't both of those be true at the same time? Or at least a mixture? Rewatch the rooftop apology scene, it is pretty explicit. Utena's belief that she knows what is best for Anthy and that she can save Anthy is the traditionally male perspective the show is trying to criticize. I believe it is possible for Utena to want the best for Anthy and love her while unbeknownst to herself act out harmful patterns of behavior. This is the point of the dissolving dress episode where Utena forces Anthy to go to a ball when she has severe anxiety and she is horribly "pranked" by Nanami. The irony of the happy ending there where Utena "rescues" Anthy is that Utena is the only reason Anthy is in that position at all. This is developed further in Mitsuru's arc with Nanami (he puts her in danger to save her and be a good brother) and Anthy's relationship with Akio. Akio says he wants to help Anthy but he deliberately manipulates her and others to maintain his status quo and her suffering. Utena buys into the narrative of the dueling game to satisfy her princely aspirations but the dueling game is not how to help Anthy. Utena really is trying to help, but she is naive (understandably so) and latches on to the explanation presented to her (even though she calls it out for being nonsense multiple times especially early on) because it lets her feel like she is important and that she is a good prince. As she says on the rooftop, she did it for her ego. Or at least it is a very major component of their relationship until they come to terms with each other on the roof.

While i do agree with 90% of this video? I honestly dont think anthy can choose to leave. Abuse isnt that simple so i cant agree with ya there, especally considering this has been going on for YEARS! Utena was able to crack through sure but she wasnt able to "save" anthy. She was able to give anthy the courage and stregnth to save herself, begin to heal, and find her own support group that dosent include akio.
I had a similar realiztion moment as you but for a whole different scene and the meaning behind it. *When I touch on how the line up I'll switch names depending on which case I mean.* Specifically how anthy sleeping with her brother Dios is mirrored with Akio being implied to have slept with Utena.
This hit me harder than normal because if Dios and Akio are one in the same? Then he essentially just took from Utena the very thing Anthy took from her brother: purity/innocence/NOBILITY!
It makes what comes next all the more heartbreaking because thinking back on those scenes? While we don't see the act being carried out? We see key shots that imply the act and all but confirm it. I can't say for sure if utena gave consent or not but one thing is very very clear. It mirrors the past almost perfectly.
Utena is 14, a student, she doesn't seem to even enjoy what's happening (sorry but if you give consent but you want to stop? That's when your partner is supposed to stop. If you or your partner decide that you aren't ready? That's when you stop. I just got really bad vibes from the expressions she had) while Akio is at least in his 30s, he's engaged, he's a stand-in for the school chairman. That's illegal, morally wrong, and honestly seems like an attempt to take her noblity so he can regain his own. (I really wish I was making this up! Look on the fan wiki.)
A similar case happens with dios and anthy: it's taboo for siblings to have sex, anthy didn't have consent, anthy likely didn't stop when told, and Dios clearly didn't enjoy it. (Again: if they did enjoy this wouldn't the expressions match that?)
Dios had told Utena not to loose her strength or nobility, even when she becomes a young lady. Sadly? She doesn't "lose it", it's taken from her. While Utena proves herself twice the prince Akio will ever be? Seeing her break down in the final episodes really got to me on my second watching. (I only watch the third arc twice. The second time was when it hit me. I can only watch creepily sexy posing shots by characters I hate for so long before I feel like my brain was rotting.)

Do you think you could do another analysis video of Revolutionary Girl Utena when you have time?
Like maybe a video about how this series details two types of relationships:
    A) positive love and B) abusive relationships?

Ok so...utena is 14, that’s the most confusing thing. How old is akio ??? I thought she was 18.

Yeah, the characters definitely look older than their actual ages. Akio's age is never stated, but I'd say somewhere in his 20's since people call him young. Of course he's really much older than that.

The source I used isn't up any more but you can see the link here for another one. It is a Japanese cultural thing, I did not assign the roses their meanings. Also Miki may not be as innocent and pure as he is described! Thanks for the comment.
