This video was fantastic. I love Utena because there's always something more to learn every time I watch it. Your insights on colour and the picture frame motif added even more depth to my understanding of the show - and this was only on yellow! Thanks for sharing.
I would listen you you talk about Utena for daysss. Please share more thoughts on the show! It's definitely one of my all time favorites! There is so much symbolism that needs dissecting!
Nanami and Anthy are my favorite characters in the series, and while I noticed some parallels between them, I didn't realise how much they had in common... Also I love color theory and it's been killing me not knowing what most of those flowers meant when they showed up! :( Again, great video! The end part convinced me I need to rewatch the series.
This was such a well done analysis! Listening to you point out the symbolism in Utena reminded me of how much I love it and how much thought went into the show. Thank you.
I just happen to be looking at some postes about utena ad yours was on point I love how you broke it down for me it was awesome cuz dis iz my favorite show scenes it came out keep up the good work 😀
Great job! Although I had noticed the anthy/nanami/utena/cat parallels, I never realized anthy was surrounded by a yellow border in some shots. Time to grab a note pad and rewatch the series for the millionth time lol. This is also my favorite tv show. I first watched it when I was 12. At that time I was like Nanami in that I knew I had seen something profound, yet wasnt mature enough to understand most of it. I put the show in the back of my brain for a few years. Not ready to watch it again and actually reflect on it. The second time I watched it was at the age of 20 and my mind was blown. This show resonates with me more and more as I age and learn more about myself and the world. If you and others would ever like to rant about Utena on skype let me know :D I too often have the urge to talk about this show but unfortunately not many have seen it or become obsessed with it haha
Really excellent video pointing out the parallels between Anthy and Nanami, as well as between Utena and Nanami! As a side-note, I've always had a hard time putting into words exactly what the frames and the roses symbolized too, so this is definitely going to help me the next time I rant about Utena to a friend lol. Honestly I would love to see you do a video about the funniest symbol-filled episode of them all: Episode 22 aka the one where Ikuhara just gives up and adds all the pointing hands in the scenes.
Excellent video. Hope to see more Utena content from you in the future. When I watched the series for the 2nd time, Nanami actually became my favorite character, which is a pretty unpopular opinion I think. Personally I was unsure of the meaning behind the placement of some of the colored roses, so I really appreciate this insight.
The videos you've made about Utena are sooo good and i'd love to see more if you ever have the time for it! I'm only on my second viewing of the series (and first reading of the manga) at the moment so it's still quite difficult to figure out alot of what is going on. Like a few people have said, I never noticed the parallels shared between Nanami and Utena until you pointed them out but it's certainly helped me to analyse some of the other shitty power imbalances demonstrated in relationships throughout the show i.e. Juri and Shiori's. I'd be interested to see what your take on the Black Rose Arc is as it begins to show Utena being forced to question the legitimacy of her own memories and whatnot
I'm happy that this is your favorite anime (because it should be - it's just that good), but as a fan, you should really be able to pronounce Utena's first *and* last names correctly by now.
My only gripe with this video is how "Anthy could leave if she wanted" or "She can stop being the rose bride at anytime". I'm sorry but that's not how abusive relationships work. The victim feels powerless or unable to be valued by anyone else and therefor can't leave. Abuse is about controlling other people by making them feel like they are nothing.
I think I could've worded it better for sure, but I wasn't trying to victim blame. It's more about recognizing Anthy's humanity and ability to choose. All the people around her constantly tell Anthy she is just a doll who can't choose for herself, but at the end (with Utena's help) she decides for herself to leave. But crucially even with Utena's help it is Anthy's decision. It is a reaffirmation of her basic humanity against the abuse perpetrated against her. I should have portrayed her position more positively in this vid, but I was too focused on getting across the themes I associated with yellow which are more negative. No matter how much Anthy was mistreated, misled, and abused she still has the capacity to decide for herself which I think is very empowering. Now the flip side of this is that in most abusive situations the victim can't just leave, but in Utena that is decidedly not the case since Anthy is the main source of Akio's power and influence. I love the series obviously but that is an aspect I do have mixed feelings about. Just walking away is Anthy's revolution but it isn't something that everyone can choose like she did.
The sound of your late night edits seems off (at least to me). The scenes play silently for a minute before the sound begins in a delay. That aside, a wonderful and thoughtful piece. I really loved it. Will you be discussing all the colour meanings in Utena, do you think?

Video is good but learn how to say Utena please.
I: OOtehnah? Iunno, names are weird.
Banisoup. That's sounds about right. That's how they say it in the Japanese.
