If you used PLA then use some isopropyl alcohol to smooth over the print, if you used ABS then use acetone. This makes smoothing the prints much easier and cuts the work time in half. You can also use some resin or epoxy putty to fill in the gaps and smooth the prints.

I know this is old, but as a suggestion, you might want to try using a fine grit sand in a blast cabinet (if you have one or can gain access to one). Would speed up the process and give better results at the same time. Make sure to start the air pressure lower first though.... Don't ask me how I know.
