@@paulgibson9609 Okay he's no Freddy Mercury... No one ever will be but Brian May sang really beautifully here and complemented Mercurys singing perfectly. Also Brian wrote this song so credit where its due.
Brian would be a lead singer in any other band. He's a great singer in addition to a phenomenal guitarist. Those beautiful layered Queen vocals wouldn't be the same without Brian and Roger's voices blending with Freddie's.

For my entire life, 34 years, I didn't 'get' the love for Queen. Sure, the song I'd heard were fun, certainly enjoyable, but they didn't seem to fit the level of reverence people have for the band.

Quite right. I give eternal props to Freddie for recognising when his band mates wrote an incredible song, and not taking credit. Art Garfunkel could learn a thing or two from Freddie.
As much as i like this song, i wish that they (or May) could have involved John Deacon even a little. Heck, it took a whole orchestra to replace his usual contributions (so that you hardly missed him). Likewise, i wish that Brian could have been involved in One Year Of Love (Sax solo? As nice as it sounded, really?) Oh well, those two were going through a thing around this time, for a while actually...

99% of comments here are going to focus on Freddie's undeniable talent. Yet let not forget the rest of the band. It's May's composition. The glorious unique tone of May's hand-built Red Special guitar adds an extra dimension to this track. Deacon and Taylor prove their flexibility in holding the tempo to whatever the other two threw at them to play and I imagine they had their input too to complete a track as polished as this. Its all a Kind of Queen Magic !!
all outstanding in their own right not sure if freddie could have done it without them although freddie was one of the greatest showman on stage
Queen was always one of the most collaborative bands in Rock and Roll. Every single member of the band wrote hit songs. May and Taylor sang some of the songs. Freddie played piano and guitar on songs, etc. It definitely wasn't a one man show.
Yes every Queen fan knows this and we all love to brag about Freddie's talent and we know that the song is written by Bri and we know that Roger and Deacy were a GIANT part if Queen Deacy claimed he couldn't sing but when I heard him sing it sounds good Roger and Brian sometimes sang songs and Freddie has that wonderful amazing voice and amazing piano skills and he played guitar a little.
The songs I say were most successful by each member:
Fred- Bohemian Rhapsody
Bri- We Will Rock You
Rog- Radio GaGa
Deacy- Another One Bites The Dust
I agree that people often forget the three that are standing in Freddie's spectacular shadow. I truly believe that Brian May is one of the most underrated rock guitarists of all time.

Stars_and_Stripes I just seen it yesterday, I agree with you. Queen is my favorite rock band then Journey, but Freddie is my favorite frontman, we will never have a frontman/natural performer like Freddie, at least not in my life time.
I just seen it 2 hours ago, i almost cried.. it's awesome, i wish i could had been in the crowd at Live Aid.. i will forever bow in front of our Queen.
The story is a bit altered in the movie, but nonetheless it's a mesmerising movie. Freddie did not know that he has AIDS until 1987, so 2 years after the live aid. Also, they went in concerts for almost a year before live aid (so they weren't "rusty"). The way that they presented the facts in the movie had a much bigger impact on the crowd. Really nice movie! I love it!

I cried when hearing this song played in the movies where Freddie just got diagnosed with AIDS. Truly a masterpiece of a song and movie.
When I was young, I answered the question, "Who wants to live forever?" with ME, I DO ! WHO WOULDN'T ! Now after 68 years of life's experiences, heartbreaks and disappointments, mistakes and losses, I finally understand the implied answer to this beautiful song. It says so much with so few words. It's haunting to know he died way before his time and wrote this song. I never had the opportunity to see Queen in concert, but I was born in the late 1900's, so I got to experience the music and it's evolution. Looking at how movies and TV shows sample music from different genres and decades, I'm able to show my daughter where the original songs came from and let her listen to the whole song. So far, she loves them. Under Pressure is her favorite from Queen.
Brian May wrote this song, but Freddie performed it beautifully, his voice gave this song a dimension that no other voice ever could.
My brother and i have choosen this song for our mums funeral which died at 60 only because of cancer.

When my Nan was sick with cancer she often laid in bed very quiet and withdrawn. She never sung any songs in her late days but one day we had the music channel on when "Who wants to live forever" came on. She was a massive Queen fan. Her eyes opened, she sat up straight and she started singing every lyric. I remember it haunting me so well because she must have felt every lyric so deeply at that time. I'll always think of her through Queen's music. She asked for "One year of love" to be played at her funeral

Written by Brian May for HIghlander after being inspired by a scene where the lead immortal protagonist watches his love grow old and die while he stays young forever. One of the reasons I love that film is that it inspired some of Queen's greatest work.
A very passionate soul with a voice unmatched in our day. Voice of my childhood and friend many lonely forgotten night I spent left behind with only the masters to quite my soul and hope of a better day to come. Too bad I ended back lonely and broken and yearning for the passions that once got me through. Thank you Freddy for being my secret friend so long ago and glimpses of the way we use to be so bonded.

But it's something even people with English as first language fall for, due to homophones, dialect or just rushed and unclear vocal recording. I think there is even a webpage collecting "misheard lyrics" of various songs. It's pretty much the equivalent of "backward masking", where if you play a record backwards you hear hidden messages. Like Robert Plant singing "my sweet Satan" in "Stairway To Heaven" and it really does sound like it. But it also sounds like "my sweet satin" (because it's a hidden fact rockstars like their clothes made of satin) or "my wheat atin'" (Robert tells us about his addiction to eating wheat porridge?).
