This song makes me cry every time I listen to it, especially when you consider this is the last track on the last album released the year he died. He was such an incredible human and musician.
The only song that gives me goosebumps. The last song Freddie recorded. So neatly, powerfully, freezingly delivered. A death permeates the lyrics and the music. But yet it is so... sooo epic, explosive... Oooh, gosh, The Queen... Running out of words...
+dejffjed This was not Freddie's goodbye, that was on the Miracle the track Was it all worth it. Innuendo was Queen saying goodbye to their dear friend and brother. Freddie was determined to sing until he dropped, and this song in particular helped me when i thought i couldent do it anymore, but then i put this on wiped my eyes and said "the show must go on"In fact the rest of the band didn't think Freddie was capable of singing this due to his health. He tossed back a vodka and said "I'll fucking do it darling" and nailed the song in one take.
Это гениальное исполнение! В песне гениально всё: и текст, и музыка, и голос! Это атомный взрыв! До сих пор еë звучание рождает в моей душе порыв колоссальной энергии! Это истинное наслаждение!
To hit such notes when he was so seriously ill is a testament to Freddie. He recorded this whilst drinking vodka to get through it. In his own words he said, you write the lyrics and I'll sing it darling. Freddie was phenomenal.
I saw an interview with Brian May some years ago and he said everyone at that recording session knew Freddie was dying and that the end would come soon. But Freddie was so determined to record as much as he possibly could, he told Brian to keep writing the songs and he'd record whatever he'd written. When the day came to record this one Freddie was very ill and Brian said that he didn't have to do it. Freddie downed the shot, slapped the glass on the table and said "I'll f***ing do it, darling", went into the recording booth and slammed this out 3 times. The final song he ever recorded was just a few days after that. Mother Love. But Brian felt the song needed another verse and he just didn't have it until Freddie was too ill to continue, so that's why the final verse is Brian singing, not Freddie.
Considering he was seriously suffering from AIDS at this point, his vocals were something unimaginable and you can really tell he took the song to heart.💗 Absolutely brilliant one of the best songs from Innuendo
It was the last song on the last album they released before Freddy died. They knew! The band wasn’t sure if he could sing. Brian May thinks it’s one of his best performances.
Skippy Meer yeah they didn’t think he could sing anymore due to having AIDS but Freddie chugged some vodka and said, “I’ll fucking do it.” I heard he aced it on the first go
I can’t imagine how Freddie felt whilst performing this, knowing that this was it, he’d never sing again, he’d never perform a live show, to know that he is nearing the end, the end of what he loved most in the world. Performing. To know that the song you’re performing will be the last one you ever will must fill someone with a type of energy to ensure that it’s legendary and leave its mark, and my god did he deliver. Even on the brink of death Freddie managed to pull of one more amazing show. In his eyes The show *must* go on regardless.
His last song is 'Mother Love.' Sadly, he passed mid-way through recording it, which is why they brought in someone else to finish it. His goodbye was 'Was it all worth it,' from the previous record. This song, this album, I believe, was him just doing what he loved, before the curtains drew closed one last time.
Wesley Byrd no he didn’t die during the recording. He said he was tired but would come back to finish the song but never did, so Brian finished it during May 13-16. Then Freddie died in November Edit: my bad. Freddie recorded through May 13-16, the Brian finished it
The strenght of a dying man singing with such passion is just something else. And we moan if we have a cold. Ive been a Queenfan since I was 15 and im now 58. What stuck me is Queen is the only band out there who acrually have so much fun doing their thing in videos and at concerts, Queen are just themselves and one of the best bands around... Absolute perfection and music that never gets old.
@lauried61 my aunt worked in the Music business for a music distributor in Sweden so had access to quite a lot and I knew Queen as a band early but never really listened to them until my teens and got hooked there and then.
This song is so powerful, Freddie knew he was dying and was able to sing this song in a incredible way. I have the goosebumps everytime I listen this song and think at what there is behind.
I think Brian may wrote it. He said to Fred not to worry about performing it as he was in so poor health . I belive Fred necked a vodka and said let's do it. Then came up with this on deaths door. So impressive
@@bluebell3720 I didn't know that Freddie also wrote this song, I thought it was just Brian for Freddie. If you have any of those interviews please share it I want to see it!!. Thanks
@@thenorthernvoice3713 I dont understand why Brian explained it this way. It was for the Innuendo album it would have been a huge waste of their time if it wasn't used. If Freddie couldnt do it all they had to do was lower it its not as if anyone else could do it. Brian did the demo and explained he wasn't able to sing it in chest voice only falsetto To sing words in high range is a challenge for a good singer nevermind one who's very ill. On different articles it says roger and john were jamming on others it includes Freddie which seems more likely Their rhythm chord is what he used in the song as well as pachelbels canon which seems more like Freddie than Brian and richards suggssted a key change Itv 2014 Brian said it was about a sad clown whos smile is painted on and they he and Freddie hammered out the words Brian does tend to contradict himself a lot though About this song he has said both that they did and didnt discuss the lyrics as in the meaning But he has said a lot they wrote it together Express that they spent the afternoon together and solidified the first verse and had enough to finish the last two verses and later added wings of a butterfly The theme of the clown probably came from Freddie as the intro to hard life is from Vesti la giubba about a heart broken clown painted smile as the show must go on! And its very much Freddie attitude in life especially when he was very ill keep smiling and on with the show! Edit Sing (words)High range 'In chest voice'
It will never not astound me that Freddie Mercury, on his last legs of life, recorded possibly his greatest vocal performance in his entire career, and he did it in one take after downing a fifth of vodka and telling Brian "I'll fuckin' do it, darling." Greatest. Rock singer. Of All-Time.
It wasn't done in one take. It was done in one sitting. But absolutely amazing vocal performance. It moves me every time I hear it. It's my favorite Queen song.
Saw it last night! My husband was ready to leave the theatre but when I heard the strings I told him sit back down! Lols. this is one of my fave queen songs, I wasnt gonna miss it. Got misty eyed as the credits were rolling :(:(:(
This video makes me so sad, because it’s literally Queen celebrating all the stuff they’ve done because Freddie was so sick and they knew they were basically at the end of Queen. But this is such a beautiful song and for a man at the end of his life, Freddie’s voice is incredible
@@benpezzot8805 did you mean when he's making this song? if so, that's freaking impressive that he can perfectly sing this song at that time with his conditions.
The bit that we all know about is spine chilling. Literally a man with death on his door step and he pulls out a note with so much emotion that very few can do. Actually, no one could do with that type of condition! The best!
I just wanna leave this comment to all those people who cry over their screen when listening to this song because they can understand what actual pain is and the meaning of those wonderful lyrics Let’s honour Freddie, who was slowly dying, but still singing out of his heart...
”My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die I can fly, my friends” Beautiful, just beautiful. I hope you got to fly into the sunset, Freddie.
This is without a doubt, one of greatest songs to have ever graced planet earth! I was raised to the sound of the legend that is Freddie Mercury & Queen. I'm now 50 years old and every time I hear the lyrics "Inside my heart is breaking, my make-up may be flaking, but my smile, still, stays on" chokes me still today...... Nuff said......GENIUS!! ❤
So this must be the first time I’ve commented on a video in about ten years, but I couldn’t stop myself. Being terminally ill myself and waiting for a lung transplant, Freddie’s state of mind in the lyrics and music he created seems so clear to me. It’s so heartbreakingly raw and real, and every line breaks me. His spirit and energy was nothing less than mesmerising, and I so wish I’d been around to have lived through his lifetime.
Stay Strong Annie,Freddie was the most courageous person,Doing this song in one take being that sick and I admire and respect this man for his strength
@@ignitionbot9915 this song was definitely not recorded day before his death. The last song he recorded was Sweet Mother Love, where in the last part is Brian singing as Freddie never came back to studio to finish the song.
@@ignitionbot9915 Show Must Go On was recorded in 1990. However, it was released weeks before his passing (Oct 1991 vs. he died Nov 1991 ). "Mother Love" is actually the last song he recorded, he did the vocals for Brian May just mere months before his death, singing it May 1991, a few months before his passing.
@@lamusicameencanta7770 Brian May tells the story that Freddie was so sick and frail from the last stages of AIDS that he asked Freddy not to record it...there was just too much vocal power required to perform the incredible range of notes in this song, and Brian was afraid it would further damage Freddie's health.. Freddie told Brian that, not only was he going to record the song, he was going to absolutely nail it...this rendition was the result...absolutely legendary performance, even as his body was giving out on him...this was an all time great performance...

What a glorious human moment. Knowing you can't be long for this world, instead of moping around Freddie gets in the recording booth and blasts out this absolute belter. It's not only incredibly well done, it's inspiring to all those suffering, and a fantastic way of giving the Grim Reaper the finger. That's what a true artist does. They take all the darkness the world can throw at them, turn it into something beautiful, then ask for more. This song exemplifies why we need the arts.
The most heartbreaking beautiful song ever made. Oh Freddie. So sad for you. The most amazing song meister ever ever ever. Even when you were dying you never gave up. I've heard your voice all of my life. This is what an icon truly is. RIP Freddie. No one will ever reach the heights you reached. What an amazing man. ❤
His last song was Mother Love. He was unable to finish it, Brian May completes it. Should listen to it. This is also one of his last songs I'll give you that. And in my opinion, his best.
Hard to imagine that this week will mark the 25th Anniversary of his passing. Long Live Queen and may God continue to bless the immortal spirit of Freddie Mercury.
_"I'll face it with a grin. I'm never giving in. On with the show!"_ He'll finish the damn song, even if it kills him. Freddie laughed in the face of Aids. A hero to the end.
The thing is it did kill him in their last song mother love he was basically half dead making and one day before it was done he said "I'll finish the song tomorrow" but he never woke up and thats why brian sang the last verse and you can hear the sadness in his voice
Lone Star couldn’t have put it better myself . Another line that stands out : whatever happens I’ll leave it all to chance meaning he’s prepared to take whatever life is throwing at him and live on .
You can almost hear his bandmates’ instruments in despair, crying, just screaming at the unfairness of it all, knowing that soon, Freddie will be gone from them. Such a powerful song 😢
Freddie, almost blind and very tired from his illness, entered the studio, Brian saw him so badly that he told him to rest then we recorded, he without thinking twice took a glass of vodka and said let's do it dear and this song came out in the first take. I still wonder how do you make such a beautiful song at such a tragic moment in your life? Freddie had a supernatural voice and was without a doubt an incredible human being.
I don't listen to this song very often because it rips out my heart and I ball my eyes out. Every time. After I stop sobbing it takes a while to listen to anything else because the show goes on in your head, haunting echoes of beauty and heartbreak. Freddy was the extreme quintessential one of a kind. I hope he broke free in heaven and rocked it till it shook All over like a jellyfish, crazy young man we love.....thank you freddy

Thanks , Michel H , I can sing along to this freely now , I know there are lyric videos , but I just decided to see this one , and I was going to see a lyric video but now I don’t need to. Freddie Mercury was a true legend ...
Thanks for the lyrics. They express Freddie's situation truthfully, particularly nearer to his life's end. They're so poignant and honest, true to Freddie's mode of expression. RIP Freddie who never did give in and kept his smile and determination on 🌷👑.
This is Freddie's greatest and most powerful vocal performance. Still gives me goosebumps when het hits the top of his range with the 'on with the show' at the end.
No, his greatest performance is "Mother love". Hearing him singing in such a somber register, and then hearing his voice pick up out of nowhere, in his final days, is incredibly haunting. Then the end, if you havent listened to it, is heartsinking to hear.
Well, I’m glad the movie came out because now he’s not only a legend of the past. His legacy has moved to the present and even the younger generation appreciates him. The show went on.
Martin incredible isn’t it? I did read somewhere that the guys were worried about sick Freddy was. But he said he would take a couple shots of vodka and be fine.
@@yehhshhs a talented singer could pull it off, but it's not about the technical performance of the song: Freddie's soul went into this performance. I get chills every time, knowing this is the goodbye letter of a dying man giving an emotional performance untouchable by mortals. This song is a refection of the courage Freddie faced his final days with. It's a difficult song because of the emotion behind it.
This song just has this raw power and emotion. Freddie knew he was dying, that he was weak, but he still fought to the very end. He wasn’t going to give in easily, and he was going to face whatever life threw at him until he physically couldn’t. I know that Brian wrote this, but it still feels like it was written for Freddie as well as himself, as neither was going to give up anytime soon.

My 14 years old niece is so obsessed over Queen, that she based the essay for her junior high final exams on Freddie. It means doing a lot of research, including every single school subject and linking it to the topic you chose, dunno if they do the same in other countries, but I 'm the proudest aunt on earth! She told me that Freddie literally recorded this song in one shot, while he was already so ill that he could barely stand. He is like those ancient mythological heroes who got to mock death, if not forever, at least enough for becoming legends.
Then the last song he recorded, Mother Love, he was basically singing whilst literally laying half dead on the studio’s desk, like a bored student sitting on his chair but laying on the table sleeping. According to the Queen documentary, after finally finishing the penultimate verse he was so tired and so much in pain he told the producers “he will finish the song tomorrow”. He never woke up. It’s quite chilling to hear the song, because the last verse ended up being sang by Brain May - and you can feel the sorrow in his voice when he sings.
DOWNED A BIG THING OF WHISKEY AND DID THIS SONG AN VIDEO IN ONE SHOT AND STILL SOUNDS AMAZING YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW HE WAS ILL FROM HIS VOICE ... GREATEST SINGER EVER !!!!!!!
75 years ago today , a boy came into the world who will become the legend in several years. His talent, charisma and energy influenced people all over the world. His music and voice will be eternal. Happy birthday, to dear Freddie

"My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies Fairy tales of yesterday, grow but never die I can fly, my friends…" this part of the song gives me goosebumps...
My absolute favorite Queen song. It's absolutely their most epic record, and it is just so perfect in every way. It's amazing that Mercury was already in bad condition when they recorded this song, and it's overall message about fighting your urge to just die and move on is so inspirational. Freddie Mercury might not be with us anymore, but his memory will never die.
Yeah it's true, the guy could barely walk, but he nailed it like a boss. he walked into the studio, under the influence of vodka and said " Come on darling, i'm doin this shit" and did it on his first take.
Winter Damon He could not only barely walk, but he could barely speak. The vocals in this song are so high as well. It's just... mind-blowing. And this was all six weeks before his death.
I remember being in a very rough bar in South Liverpool a few days after he died and this came on the video jukebox. The whole place stopped and everyone silently watched. The opening chords still send shivers down my spine.

For all of Freddie Mercury's countless achievements, this vocal part has to be the single most impressive. Just a year before his death, in terrible health, he still said "I'll fucking do it, darling" and delivered the most beautiful swan song he could. This man is my fucking hero.
True I've heard many songs by Queen except this, today i heard it on a playlist and I quickly recognized his voice and tears started streaming down my cheeks, as I felt goosebumps all over my body. A masterpiece indeed!
Freddie's voice is what made Queen so special...but damn...whenever I hear the chorus of the other band members I am just mind-blown...the voices of the other three band members combined have such an extreme power 😵
You can feel every note he sings on this track … it’s very emotional and beautiful x♥️ Freddie died on my 21st birthday.. which my mum and I spent crying lots , forever missed 🙏🏽🌺

I must shamefacedly admit I have never been a Queen-fan. I had other favourite bands when I was a kid in the 80's, and the music just never hit me the way other things did. But I always ... always ... appreciated the lyrics and the skill of both the band and of course of Freddie Mercury as a one-of-a-kind vocalist. It was a bit odd, because while I could appreciate these things separately, and while I could SEE the skill involved and HEAR why I should probably have loved this band to pieces ... it just never completely clicked with me. I still don't know why. But this song is the exception. This is simply ... simply ... simply ... beautiful. Especially when you learn, many years later, how ill Freddie Mercury was when he recorded this, and how he nearly shattered himself to deliver this one final loveletter to life. I still hope that one day I will wake up, and that missing piece will fall into place, and I can put on a Queen anthology and be swept away by it ... I genuinely do. But at least I have this one, until then.
Rest in peace Freddie. This world was just too cruel for your beautiful soul. I remember being a kid and dancin' around the house with my dad and my grandpa to your amazing songs. All we want now is for you to be happy, wherever you are now. Also, say hi to grandpa! He was such a big fan of yours! :) With love,Daria and her dad from Romania
I mean, how did this one of a kind beautiful man hit those unbelievably high notes when he was obviously in the midst of this terrible disease. He TRULY was one of a kind. This is my favourite Queen song. My mum adores 'Don't stop me now' Hell, we both love everything Freddie did x
3:23 Ulimate proof that Freddie was the best singer ever. Don't get me wrong, Queen isn't even my favourite band, I'm not psycho-fan. But when it come to pure vocals, there is no one even close.
This is just on of the best songs ever recorded by any artist on the world. With the story of it in mind, Freddie on his last days and very ill. The emotions in his voice are tearing me apart every single time. The way he sings 'I can fly my friend', that line has so much different emotions in it. I hear proudness, pain, fear, love, hope in his voice, just in one single vocal line, nobody can top that. Freddie lives on....
I have a 4 month old great granddaughter and I put on Fat Bottemed Girls or The Show Must Go On, she instantly stops being fussy. The first time I had it on my phone and if I moved the phone I got a nasty side eye. What a performer, the likes of which we will never see again. Queen was pure talent, not like today!
The single greatest song from the single greatest album ever made. When things are at their darkest I listen to this incredible song and remember that if Freddie Mercury didn’t quit until the day he died, then neither can I.
I'm likely one of the many that became teary watching this. The fact that this man is gone, that this band will never be the same, is such a tragedy. What incredible talent. This song was recorded shortly before Freddie's death. Adam Lambert claims its the hardest Queen song to sing.
People who weren't terminally ill could only wish to have a voice like that.

Considering he was seriously suffering from AIDS at this point, his vocals were something unimaginable and you can really tell he took the song to heart.💗 Absolutely brilliant one of the best songs from Innuendo
almost like he really could see the end coming, and this was just his way of telling everyone adios, don't worry me and keep on enjoying life
It was the last song on the last album they released before Freddy died. They knew! The band wasn’t sure if he could sing. Brian May thinks it’s one of his best performances.
Skippy Meer yeah they didn’t think he could sing anymore due to having AIDS but Freddie chugged some vodka and said, “I’ll fucking do it.” I heard he aced it on the first go
Skippy Meer ik so inspirational
Freddie Mercury, the greatest singer ever discovered.
Inconclusive Idiots spoken like a legend.
Then Freddie died in November
Edit: my bad. Freddie recorded through May 13-16, the Brian finished it
He wasn't on the brink of death, he lived a year after this and wasn't his last song.
Yeah his last song was mother love, wich is a beautiful, heartbreaking song as well, so sad he couldn't finish it..
The strenght of a dying man singing with such passion is just something else. And we moan if we have a cold.

I dont understand why Brian explained it this way.
It was for the Innuendo album it would have been a huge waste of their time if it wasn't used.
If Freddie couldnt do it all they had to do was lower it its not as if anyone else could do it.
Brian did the demo and explained he wasn't able to sing it in chest voice only falsetto
To sing words in high range is a challenge for a good singer nevermind one who's very ill.
On different articles it says roger and john were jamming on others it includes Freddie which seems more likely
Their rhythm chord is what he used in the song as well as pachelbels canon which seems more like Freddie than Brian and richards suggssted a key change
Itv 2014 Brian said it was about a sad clown whos smile is painted on and they he and Freddie hammered out the words
Brian does tend to contradict himself a lot though
About this song he has said both that they did and didnt discuss the lyrics as in the meaning
But he has said a lot they wrote it together
Express that they spent the afternoon together and solidified the first verse and had enough to finish the last two verses and later added wings of a butterfly
The theme of the clown probably came from Freddie as the intro to hard life is from Vesti la giubba about a heart broken clown painted smile as the show must go on!
And its very much Freddie attitude in life especially when he was very ill keep smiling and on with the show!
Edit
Sing (words)High range
'In chest voice'

It's not only incredibly well done, it's inspiring to all those suffering, and a fantastic way of giving the Grim Reaper the finger. That's what a true artist does.

Fantastic! This song is 33 years old, it was released on October 14, 1991, and a month later Freddie was gone...You're the king, Freddy, forever..💔💔💔

For all of Freddie Mercury's countless achievements, this vocal part has to be the single most impressive. Just a year before his death, in terrible health, he still said "I'll fucking do it, darling" and delivered the most beautiful swan song he could. This man is my fucking hero.
He knew he wasn't going to make it so he sang this the best he could, he was going over the limits when he sang this.

Brian May wrote this song, it was not Freddie.
Yeah this was Brian May saying goodbye to his friend.
Though it's impressive that Freddy played it in one take
Legend!
Brian got writing credit, but Freddie was involved as well with the creative process, giving his input due to the nature of the song's narration.
Brian was such a gifted writer for Queen.. Freddie delivered in one take before collapsing... you gotta admire the guy's courage

The single greatest song from the single greatest album ever made. When things are at their darkest I listen to this incredible song and remember that if Freddie Mercury didn’t quit until the day he died, then neither can I.

This song was recorded shortly before Freddie's death. Adam Lambert claims its the hardest Queen song to sing. I believe Freddie did the high notes in only one take, which in itself is amazing, considering the condition he was in! Freddie's body diminished, but his voice continued to grow. What a masterpiece.
