  • Listening to the basic sound structure of the intro riff, I dialed the Master Volume half way up and minimized the Preamp Volume (following the rumors that state John was plugged straight into the mixing board) to the point where the bass and treble aren't effected. The Compressor settings are quite high as it's heard in the original recording. It gives it that famous rubber-bandy, squishy sound. Also, the rumors state that John was playing the Intro through a Fender H.O.T. amp, which was a late 80's/early 90's solid state practice amp. I might revisit this video later on in the future and play the riff through my Fender Princeton 112 amp (solid state).

I use a 1998 Vintage rare Squier Stratocaster made in Mexico. Definitely my Favorite guitar Purchase

I would use more low end, compression and gain. John has very biting sound even in his clean tone.

You don't need reverb to achieve John's tone. The most important thing to note is that John's clean channel is still very dirty which can be achieved with an overdrive pedal with built in compression like the Marshall Jackhammer. Or you can do it at the amp if you have one that will do this. The great thing about that pedal is that it will also tame the DS-2 distiortion pedal which should be turned up to max level.

Needs way more bass and way less treble + more gain. Otherwise Vox amps nail his tone
