Such a good reminder that design is a process! We can’t always have everything on point at all times. We all have to go through trial and error. I was going absolutely nuts when I would buy something and it didn’t work out, but it is what it is!

Definitely but we need to be conscious of money badly spent, which can put a dent on your financial well being, and the stuff that is going to end up at a landfill if it cannot be repurposed or donated.

Kallax is perfect for areas you don't care about being "designy" though. I love them for my craft room, and our gaming room. Face it, a room full of board games, video games, D&D minis, and Marvel movie posters is never going to look chic, and it doesn't have to.

I know you just said you hated IKEA, but their Vindum shag rug is the most comfortable rug my feet have ever touched. It was at a friend’s house and I just wanted to lay on the floor. Bought one for my own living room and it doesn’t shed at all - even with two crazy cats clawing it! Plus it is speckled/heathered so it hides all dirt.

IKEA is more affordable than many of the alternatives. I’ve used my Kallax as closet organizers in two apartments with bins in each of the cubbies. I got them when I lived in a ridiculously small studio apartment with a tiny closet. I also got a wardrobe and a daybed. I had no furniture to start with and I was so happy to have an apartment that was functional and cozy. That said, since then, I’ve purchased a bistro table from Pottery Barn and a sofa from Crate and Barrel. I’ll upgrade when I can but I’m happy to have solid wood furniture from IKEA.

Many decor influencers talk about saving enough to purchase quality in your style. IMO saving money and knowing what your style is takes time to cultivate. In some situations, they are at odds with one another. You know your style but don't have the money, or you have a budget but not sure if the style is a trend or a treasure. Until I'm comfortable when the budget, quality, and style factors meet, I would purchase affordable and functional furniture in the meantime. You and I have the same decor philosophy.

I feel like it’s easy to rip on ikea but you are spot on about functionality. At the end of the day your home has to be functional not just aesthetic. I think ikea does an admiral job of being functional and trying to work in some aesthetic options (or basic cheap things that you can hack to match an aesthetic). I respect them more than RH which offers way too much faux wood items for insane prices.

Hi Arvin! I have a bar height table from All Modern, and I love it! It only seats two, so not necessarily a dining room option. I live in a studio apartment, so having that height difference helps differentiate my spaces.

  • @lauriequinn3487

I bought a bar height table because I thought I would love it. I like sitting at them when I go out to dinner or for drinks. I literally hate the table. So I completely agree with you on that about having one in the home

A flooring store can order any size carpet for an area rug, and if the manufacturers don't cut and bind to size ( some do)there are businesses that do it. They pick up your carpet from. The store, cut and bind it and return it to the store. It's a charge by the linear foot and you can get those wonderful fibers that have the stain proofing incorporated with the fibers in the extruder so they litteraly cannot absorb stains!! I had one made for my daughter. She would put it on the driveway, hose or pressure wash it off, let it dry , flip it over let it dry on the back, and bring it back in the house. In summer on a 100!° day it will dry both sides in a day. Great fir dogs and small children. Cheaper in larger sizes than purchasing area rugs. Also carpet remnants can be used for this purpose! Make sure they are triexta fiber!!

Congrats on the feature! Well deserve, my dear. I had a pub table in my small condo. But as I'm older now, I find them to be uncomfortable to sit in for a long period. I now have a dining table from the 40s and comfy padded chairs. It also goes better with my vintage decor.

I’m 50/50 on these. From a purely style point I agree on the kallax but I think they serve a purpose especially for kids rooms. I’m the opposite on Grey wood on the other hand. I completely love the cooler tones and really don’t like anything with dark wood or walnut. It’s all personal preference. Love your videos !!!

We have a regular dining table and a bar height table that we got from Big Lots (BL-102-1). I have this nook set up with bar decor (neon, beer tin signs, etc.) It's great for sitting at when I'm doing something alone like on my laptop and it unfolds to seat more people which is great for when we host parties. It usually sits parallel and facing the wall, but when I pull it out and unfold it I turn it perpendicular so it still has a little cozy bar feel. It's a very versatile table and I recommend it for anyone with small spaces!

Actually I love jute rugs and I've always had one in my home in some space. Right now I have one in my dining room and I have no problems. We are empty-nesters and have no pets, but on Sundays, my daughter and her family with three teenagers and a small dog come over, and it's fine. It might be because there is just about 2 ft around the table and chairs, so it's not getting full on traffic. I just really love the look.

When I lived in Italy 12 years ago, I got a beautiful Persian rug from Iranian Loom that is thick and absolutely amazing, and believe me.. it looks new, just like if I purchased it recently. Exactly the same color, texture, etc

    • @alenac.3934
      @alenac.3934 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a Persian rug that I purchased on eBay knowing it was previously used (and some areas show a bit of wear / colour discolouration (from the sun). I would love to replace the rug because I now gravitate to earthy palette but I am having a hard time finding a reasonable replacement because I have two dogs (although they are perfectly house broken [rare] accidents do happen when diarrhea strikes etc.). Plus the old Persian rug is so luxuriously thick ..... And every time I vacuum with my Dyson it still looks great. So I continue to be undecided (and I keep looking).

I definitely feel like wood tones will always be a personal preference. I have always gravitated towards cool tones, white and bright colors peppered in. Warm wood tones I feel work well with beiges/earthy tones and such which just won’t ever be my vibe but I understand why people enjoy it.

Hi Arvin, since you asked about our treasure rugs, I have a very cute Beni Ourain rug. I bought it on one of my trips to Morocco. It is so beautiful that I only use it when I am on vacation back to my apartment in Spain. I rent my apartment to Airbnb so I don't leave the rug for my guests to use ooops sorry. Also, I have a beautiful killim rug from Afghanistan that I use in my small living room. It is a dark rusty red and beige with some green touches here and there. I love it because it reflects my personality and is reminiscent of all the good moments I had in the Middle Eastern countries and Turkey during my stays.

I have a bar hight table one that looks exactly as the first pic you displayed but with leather chair with back rest. It fits perfect in my very large kitchen, and gives a balanced feel. Note, not my dinning room but kitchen. It’s in a beautiful mahogany wood and I’m very happy with it.
On color schemes, I can’t stand burnt orange and red in any home furnishings. I am proud to say, my color scheme are as you mentioned, browns, beige, but only one green material chair. Don’t like too much green unless its from plants. The metal fixtures are pewter/dark bronze and some platinum such as faucets, door handles and kitchen cabinet handles and lightings with mahogany wood and beige/white birch wood furnishing. Everyone who visits me say my home gives them a calm relaxing feeling. I tell them it an all natural color scheme environment. I do so enjoy your video. We mostly have so much in common when it comes to decorating a home.

Preach grrrl!!! Cleaning cat barf off of a jute rug is freaking impossible!!! Also, I hate anything from Ikea! Totally agree that all of the stuff I have ever purchased from there ends up in the trash which is incredibly sad 😥 I would rather buy good quality wood furniture from a second hand shop than that crap that Ikea sells. Also agree about the fake plants! There are a huge variety of plants that you can grow in the house that have all kinds of light requirements. If you need the visual height that a fake tree gives you then either put a philodendron on a shelf or use a macrame plant hanger to elevate it. Love your videos 😊

Hi Arvin, love your channel and your advice. There is nothing wrong with a design sense that changes over time and I have enjoyed seeing yours evolve since you started your channel. I do think it is always better to decorate with what your heart and soul are drawn to. I have been swayed into buying some things that were trendy at the time, but I got sick of those items so much faster than things I bought that may not be “what everybody is doing now”. I have always been drawn to warm tones and interesting different types of items like vintage, artistic, or just cozy. For the most part, I have had most of my current pieces for years and find my home inviting and cozy.

I know Arvin is going to disagree with me on this but I was given an indoor/outdoor rug, its grey and taupe diamond pattern but they do have them in natural colours that look like jute rugs. This thing has been through the ringer with my cat and dog. My cat even sharpens her claws on the carpet and this thing looks the same as it did 6 years ago when it was given to me as a hand me down. I've even dropped a plate of spaghetti on it and the stains just wiped away. I feel like it's indestructible.

I'd go for it! Apartments are tricky because you need to fit in so much in one or two rooms. Rugs are a good way to divide your dining area from your office area from your lounging area so it doesn't feel like you're always in the same space. Just keep them small enough so they don't overwhelm the area.

The bar chair in my Grandpa's home, that sits at his high counters is THE chair everyone wants to sit on, when he has people over. He has a beautiful reclining armchair he built himself that gets about equal use. You walk upstairs to an open living space, and his partially partitioned kitchen. The high chair sitting there, gives his other seating a fun height contrast, and it's just in the right place to consider taking a load off.

I have a bar height table because i have a small kitchen and no dining area. A normal height dining table would just look out of place, but a taller, rectangular table at counter height makes it kind of look like a kitchen island. It’s also easier for people to gather around than a regular dining table!

My very good long-time friend whom I absolutely love, has a bistro height dining set that seat 4.
It's really nice, but so uncomfortable. A bit of anxiety when you can't feel the floor under your feet while having a meal. I felt too close to the ceiling and scared I would fall off my chair.
She bought it because it took up less space than her previous 6 seat rectangle table.
    Yikes.
Love you, Arvin ... keep the videos coming!

First…love your channel!! Lol. We resorted to TWO (!) bar height tables with chairs for our small apartment. Living room/kitchen combo. They are set up to separate the two spaces and provide us with much needed counter prep space and for dining. Works very well to define the spaces. I live in an old brick urban apartment building. Keep up the great work!

now you know why terracotta is best on pots and tiles. I agree with your Natural Palette, dusty browns, charcoals, dark olives, metal grays, they are very calming as well as sophisticated colours, more so than the beige, blonde, cream look you see on Social. Thanks for the fun on this Fried-A.

I have a bar hight table and I think it works in my space. I do not have a dining room, I just have a small spot for a table in the kitchen. I tried a shorter table, but it was too much in the corner of my space. It made it look heavy, if you know what I mean. The tall table made the space look more open and airy. I don’t think it would work as well in traditional dining space, but it works in a small kitchen.

💯🏅🏆 Congratulations for being featured in Studio McGee! 😃 (As a French Canadian i admit not knowing but i just googled it and it's really impressive!)
I agree that Ikea style is boring and cheap... Although i like the Scandinavian style, everything i bought was made in China and almost impossible to assemble with the provided hardware. It never looks as great as in store...
About fake plants, even before i became a professional horticulturist, i could never see the point... Wouldn't enjoy fake plants, like i wouldn't enjoy fake pets or plastic children! 🤔
In the absence of natural light, one can use "office plants" that grow well under artificial light.
Thanks for the fun video Arvin!

Congratulations on the article. You look so proud in the photos!
I agree with you on the bar-height tables. I don't even like them in a bar. As you said, I have to climb up onto them and that's not comfortable.
Faux leather: ugh, it looks like a car seat.
I've seen some convincing artificial plants. But to me that defeats the purpose of having something fresh and alive in the house. Yes, they do take maintenance.
I'm not sure what you mean by a 'woven' blanket. You'd have to see close up, but it appears all the ones you showed are knitted. The ones in the Target photo for sure are--that's why they look like sweaters. Woven fabric has two directions of yarns, length-wise and cross-wise. Knitted fabric is one long yarn that is looped into the row before it, whether it's made by hand or on a machine.
    Great tips!

I purchased a bar height table simply because I saw these chairs at Pottery Barn that I absolutely loved.... fast forward 2 years later I chose wrong. The chairs I still love but not for inside my house. Now I'm stuck with them until I can afford a regular sized table. In conclusion... completely agreed with you.

I used to have a room-sized flokati(shag) rug and it was so nice on the feet but yes, it shed and it shed and vacuuming was horrifying. Instead of a room-sized flokati get a 5x8' or a 4x6 for each side of the bed, why? They are so much more manageable that a 10x14'; you can take them outside and give them a good shake and air them out and this is so much better. Get an all wool Flokati, too. much more durable than a faux fur rug.
I have two dogs, too and I put smaller flokatis on the furniture because pet hair will not stick to them! BONUS! Again, a good shaking outside and a quick vacuum and done and back on the furniture; dogs LOVE them and they will gravitate to them. Flokati wool rugs will never go out of style and the ivory colour is calming and pleasing to look at. Just my tip if you have dogs.
Note: Your advice on the Jute rugs is spot on(pun intended), oh my, I have thrown out some expensive jute rugs; HUGE jute rugs; white jute rugs----I agree. I will never, ever, ever buy them again no matter how good they look.

I have a bar height table that I bought from borders books when they went out of business. It meant a lot to me because it was the table i frequently studied at when i was in medical school. I am slmost 6'0" tall and my husband is almost 6'4". So it works for us. And yes, hubby refinished it. It was phr prary dining table for years. But we moved it to the game room in our finished basement when we moved into our new home and I had to get a table that seats 8 and fits the dining area.
But I will never get rid of my bar height table. And it is perfect for the game room, so we still get to love it.
