I love wood tile. I agree the grey ones and certain grout makes it look cheap, but omg for hot climate areas they are the best and so easy to clean if you have pets. Ours we did a warm wood tone and the grout matches the tile so it does not stand out at all. It actually looks pretty nice.
I agree; that can look warm and nice but feel cool. Sounds like a great choice for you. I wish the tiles came in random, longer lengths.

I don't have wood look tiles, but I think they can look very clean and neutral. They are durable, and much cleaner than carpet. If you already have wood tiles, you can warm up your space with area rugs. But if you don't have wood look tiles already, you might make a different flooring choice.
I would always suggest that if one has existing wood tiles is to work with them as you suggest and put down some area rugs. Recently, one of my neighbors had the tile throughout their entire house removed by a company that advertises dust free tile removal.
I like them when done right. One of my friends has them in the “public” areas of her house because of kids & dogs. None of us realized it was a tile floor until we took off our shoes. The wood floors in the bedrooms were color matched. It’s all seamless and beautiful!
I don’t like them! They are too cold looking. My new apartment has them so I have no choice but to cover with rugs :)

@@kimberlyhawkins Lots of small children plus pets means more scratches and dings and spills. Tile is far more durable and cost effective.
I think you need to do more research on wood tile.They are not like before at all they are not just grey and also come in the same size as wood planks, also you can also get grout to match. I agree tile is cold but that usual with tile. For thosw of us in the Caribbean its a better option because we have humid weather almost 365 days a year we can get the look of wood without the issues because of our weather
I actually love wood-look tiles and hope to put them in my house sometime in the future. Where I live, cold floors are a good thing most of the year. (I can always wear slippers in the winter). I had a bit of a flood in my house a few years ago and it was such a hassle cleaning the carpet. Wood floors would have been destroyed. That's when I first started thinking of tile. I definitely want it in my kitchen, and I think that having a uniform floor material makes the public areas of a house look more open. So wood-look tile would give me everything I want. I do agree about the gray color, and the wide contrasting grout.
A bit of forward planning and you can put under floor heating would be a lot more sense
Agree with most of what you said except for wood look tile. They are amazing because they are so easy to maintain. Unless you are living in really cold temperatures where the tile floor will be a bane. In warmer climates they are a fantastic. But yes you need to bear in a few pointers like pick large and wider planks, go for colors that look closer to a “ wood” color. Be very careful when you pick the grout, something closer to the color of the tile. There are some basics to select the right kind of tile, but as far maintenance goes, hands down best flooring option, in a warmer climate. In an open concept ( I know there are on their last leg of popularity) , but as long they are still here, I cannot imagine the kitchen with wood or engineered wood.
I live in Norway. I didn't even know that wood-looking tiles were a thing. No, I like things to be real. Regardless of whether it is wood, tiles, marble etc.

They are a great option for rental properties where wood can be damaged easily by furniture, office chairs and pets. I have used them and most people cannot tell the difference however I did use a higher end tile with a large plank and a high degree of variation in the timber image between tiles. The other key is to have them laid close together with minimal gap lines and choose a grout colour which will blend in making them seamless. Overall I love that my tiles are damage free and will never need maintenance!!.
Yeah, people use wood look tiles mostly for it's function. In wet spaces or if they need durability and they can't put actual wood in the area.
i’d actually prefer a wood tile or laminate over actual hardwood floors bc of maintenance.. I mop often and the upkeep on hardwood is just so much work imo

The wood tiles are very popular here in florida. We love the cool feel of them but we do them with thin grout lines and similar to the tile color.

Eclectic layered design is my favourite. Design your rooms around things you LOVE, collected things that evoke memory or your senses, and add furniture that enhances the feeling/vibe.
Done well, eclectic design feels classy and elevated, but homey and livable at the same time.

I love eclectic homes too! My own small 473 sqft apartment is inspired by Parisian eclectic apartments. A combination of vintage design, contemporary pieces, books, art, objects and personal items. A bit of personality, as far as that goes in a small apartment without any architectural interesting features.

Tile! Mine are a light wood - very aesthetic. Practically can still be beautiful . Luckily my laundry room is upstairs where all the bedrooms are
Love eclectic layered rooms! So much more interesting than the typical traditional layout. In most cases I find the open wine storage installations to be both tacky and pretentious.

I think people with kids and large dogs love the durability of the wood look tile. They are also affordable as well so it fits a lot of people’s budget.
An eclectic look says plenty about the individual, and I absolutely love it!!! Yes...I do agree that it makes for a cozier feel.

I loveeeeee my porcelain wood look tiles! I live in Florida and it’s nice to come home to the cold floor. Our dogs also love laying around on the tile. They’re easy toc lean and my dogs nails won’t scratch it up. We do have massive area rugs in our dining and living room to cozy up our spaces but I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree with this one lol.
I like wood look tiles! Tile is much bigger here in Arizona than the other places I've lived. People want to have floors that are cool to the touch in summer, so they work well. I am thinking about getting blond wood look tiles for my condo here.
I live in the Caribbean and unlike the US having hardwood floor is an extreme luxury as it's one too expensive and secondly not typical. So wood tiles and some areas and curated colors and quality look really nice. Other than that, I have your same viewpoint in all the rest of styles!
I loathe open wine storage. If the wine is worth collecting it deserves a climate controlled cellar.

Wine degrades in the light. If you really like your wine you’d keep is stored properly.
Love a classic and curated space, not a fan of eclectic layouts with little to no symmetry that resemble a furniture clearance section. There's an art to getting separates just right and not everyone has that touch IMO lol. Can't wait to see your styled master suite!
Agreed wholeheartedly! Occasionally I see a space where somebody has been able to do the eclectic layout successfully, though I think that for the average home maker it might be recommended that you stick to a classic furniture placement.

Completely agree on the wine storage. I have a few bottles on the bar top, the rest is stored away. Not only I don’t like the look of it, but when I’m hosting I prefer to choose the wine myself, and open storage invites curiosity I’m not keen to entertain.
So bad for the wine! Just the worst idea. Completely terrible in every way.
I love a conveniently located laundry room! Mine is off my kitchen and it’s amazing with little kids. We have laundry going constantly and being able to easily move the laundry from the washer to dryer or throw messy kids clothes into the washer after a meal is the best!

I think the only place for laundry rooms are beside bedrooms. No lugging laundry around. Clean or dirty. ! 😂

Agree. In our new townhouse our laundry room is in a hallway closet next to our bedroom. It's so easy to do laundry and zip clothing back into drawers and closets.
When my husband and I built our house he picked out wood tile dark grout. Because he was a quadriplegic with all the products we had to use and life we lived with a friendly wheelchair ♿️ ADA compliance was something that we had to do. It is cold and hurt my back. I’ve learn rugs is your best friend and an amazing paid of slippers. Sometimes there’s a reason why you have too.
I love the flipped furniture, not all of it, but I do like a lot of it. Some of us can’t afford to go to antique stores but perhaps you can find a nice piece at a thrift store, like you said. Great quality furniture can be expensive

Exposed wine storage has always felt very college apartment to me. Like when students were too cheap to buy decor but not too cheap to buy alcohol on the weekends so just use the bottles as decor. Not something I would ever put in my home. Lol.
It also looks like showing off when your wine collection shows.

Love the living room suggestion as far as mixing up furniture in a practical, stylish design. It's great to see so many repurposing quality furniture, and integrating pieces in a creative way.
Totally agree about the wine displays! I think they make sense when it’s integrated into a built in bar type situation. Then it’s less about a wine obsession and more about entertaining and hosting too 😂

Mine are a mixture of different browns and we made sure the Grout lines were really skinny. It looks amazing. I wish I could post a picture.
Wood looking plank flooring is nice and affordable. It is the next best thing to real wood flooring. I enjoy watching your videos!

There are some beautiful porcelain wood like tile options out there that do not look gray. I always had beautiful wood floors in the states so when I moved to P.R. I wanted wood floors unfortunately that wasn’t possible because of termites and floods although my home doesn’t have flooding issues when Hurricane Maria hit the strong winds and rain literally came through under the door and literally flooded my entry way. I had no loss thank god, but my wood like tile held strong but had I had real wood floors NOPE they would have been a goner if the termites didn’t get to them first so with that being said if real wood floors is not an option wood like tiles will always come through 😊
The horrid wood tile that you describe can be blamed on HGTV and the big box stores that push that crap! Nothing worse than materials that are not an honest use of the material. Last I check, wood was from trees and tile was from clay. Flippers and low end "developers" can also take a lot of blame for horrific home trends as well as tacky home stagers.

@@lauriesimms7560 Actually, people can use whatever they choose to use in their home. They might not be your thing but that doesn't mean they are not for others. That's what makes the world interesting, we all don't like the same things.
The tile floors are not horrid in my opinion. I mean at the end of the day, these are just opinions. HGTV is a desgn network so duh, they are definitely going to help certain design trends gain recognition and eventual adoption by their viewers who are mostly made up of everyday people with an interest in home design and decorating trends. My best friend has wood ties in his home and they look amazing. They wanted the look without the upkeep of real wood floors. I've lived in a home with wood floors and they are definitely high maintenance.
@@hshawn00 Anything that HGTV in my opinion is nothing more that advertisements for cheap imported materials sold at Home Defect and Low's Class. I would always recommend people doing a redo to obtain a competent designer to guide through the process. It is cheaper in the long run.
What I am SO over are "weird" very impractical chairs/couches/furnishings purchased just for looks and not comfort. The slouching furniture that is not only bad for our backs and posture, they are just very uncomfortable! If it looks "cool" but doesn't serve a real purpose, no thank you! You're throwing money away! Btw, I have tile in my kitchen and when you drop something it breaks and scatters everywhere. Hard to imagine having it in every room. Having said that, sometimes tile is the only practical option in certain weather areas, so...
Agree I have a day bed sofa from cb2 with the third Cushing lacking a backrest. It is so annoying plus 2 doll size chair . I finally had it and bough the ugly love sac sofa. Only the sofa part tired of being uncomfortable.
I think if you want something there just to look pretty, it'd be better and make more sense to invest in a sculpture or any art piece or even just a plant than a weird looking chair you can't sit in.
Unless you're custom building a home there's mostly little choice on where to put the washer/dryer. Mine is in my master bedroom. It was the only choice from moving it from outside to inside in my 70 year old house. And I love it. So convenient. Although if I was building custom it would be it's own laundry room near the bedrooms.
I had a house where the laundry room was in between two bedrooms. It was perfect! Didn't have to haul laundry to the other end of the house.

So agree with all of it! If you want wood on your floor, put wood on your floor! We have a 1969 home with laundry attached to the kitchen. Just moved it out to the garage and converted the room to extend the kitchen, and now it’s a pantry/bar. And yes, the wine racks exposed is a huge no-no! Unless you’re a wine maker, it’s too much. And I can say that because I live in Napa. So there!😂 and yes, the individuality and personality that comes out with non-traditional interior layouts is so good! Great vid today! 🎉
What about people that can't afford real wood floors but want the look? I hate when people make blanket statements without any consideration for people with various financial situations. Why make comments that can make people feel bad that are doing the best that they can? My best freind and his wife can afford real wood but don't like the maintenance so they chose the wood look tile. They look amazing in my opinion. They might not be your thing but that doesn't mean others who like them should be shamed because they didn't choose real wood.
Classics done well or eclectic done well: quality over quantity and beautiful plus comfortable are the real design winners for me!
I had wood (not gray) looking tiles in our Dallas home and they were AMAZING! We had bamboo wood floor put down twice that kept bulking and finally chose tile. Girl, you have to live in Texas before commenting against wood looking tile. Now in our San Francisco home we installed wood floor but tile wood floor ( not gray color!) can work in a home and be beautiful! If you have it, adore it! Most of our guests in Dallas thought it was real wood than not. 😉

As a Brazilian living in a humid tropical climate, plus the upkeep necessary to keep the wood great…all I can say: I love fake wood tiles.
I dont really mind wood tiles coz it is low maintenance, just a matter of what shade to choose, pattern of installation (and to opt for the groutless, depends on the skill of the handyman too). Engineered woods can withstand water but not too much, still needs to maintain...

I love eclectic layered rooms! I tend to like moody and passionate colors, but the neutral tones done with a mix of textures, fabrics, and patterns is gorgeous too.

I think BIG installations are too much. I love different wine bottles because they’re like art but only people in McMansions have enough people to drink those displays. Us little folks don’t have all of that.
The under the stairs wine storage was AMAZING. Some of us like it and that’s ok.

I have gray wood tiles in my home! 😣 When we bought our house the previous owners had just done a bunch of remodeling and while we liked most of it, I really was sad about the gray stained hardwood floors and gray wood tiles! We immediately had the hardwood redone since it runs all through the house and was easier to do before we moved in the furniture but the tile floors are, unfortunately, still with us. It's just a bit more involved and my husband hates breaking out tile. But I'm determined to get it out!
I don’t understand what it is with everybody and GREY. Grey everything! I’m glad it’s going out of style. Honestly, I feel like it has been out of style for a while but people have been sticking with it. Ick! 🥲 Sorry you’re going through that, haha. I hope you can get it out soon!

@@TranquilDisturbancethanks! I don't mind some gray but yes, it's the gray everything that was so overwhelming here! Esp in the flooring, which is harder to switch out. And what I feel bad about is the waste... We've been reluctant also because it was brand new and it feels so wasteful to immediately tear it out. I'm trying to strike a balance I'm comfortable with. I'll get there!
@@di4085 If you like grey and it makes you happy, then you should have it in your home. Don’t listen solely to trends, I do a few things that aren’t in line with trends all of the time because I like them and they make me happy.
Grey, personally, does not make me happy. Lol.
That being said, when speaking of flooring - warmer tones have been in for a while, and while lighter to medium warm tones have been trending for the last few years, I think that dark warm wood is making a come back right now with all of the “moodier” designs that we’ve been seeing.
In regards to the rest of design, brown has been out for some time save for all of the cognac colours and leather furniture that trended for a few years due to the “boho” look. I’m not sure that the cognac/leather obsession will ever go away, necessarily, as it’s a great way to bring in rich warm tones as accents and they mesh with many styles. “Boho” has definitely moved to the background now, however, as has farmhouse (thank goodness).
I’ve seen and heard that brown is coming back into style in regards to dark brown stained cabinets and the like, but that’s very recent.
Light and bright warm tones have probably been the most popular colour choice for years, though now I’ve really seen so many “dark and moody” inspired designs where people are using a lot of blacks and dark muted colours.
Personally right now I’m designing my new space and I’ve chosen to use a mix of styles.
@@di4085 The color is whatever you choose or whatever color you like. don't let what somebody else like change your mind from what you like. I happen to love gray too and it's used throughout my home and I have no plans of changing it anytime soon.

Arvin I couldn’t agree with you more! I recently saw open wine storage in a restaurant in Carmel… this is the only application it makes sense. If I see open wine storage in a home I’m going to wonder where the waiter is. 😂

I completely agree with everything you mentioned. I’m more traditional when it comes to furniture because I see it as a foundation for the eye. If everything in a room is mismatched, there’s either a lack of symmetry, texture, or cohesion. You build consistency and comfort by having certain foundation elements match so that there is a feeling of peace because of familiarity. We do this with color in a room by balancing it out by dispersing it throughout the room and I feel furniture in some cases (not all) helps build consistency if we match their elements. This can be by design, texture, material, contrast, juxtaposition, etc. It’s safer to build a room with some level of consistency than guessing at it and getting it all wrong and having it be too contrasting and jumbled. I feel most people need to be taught how to mix match furniture because it’s rarely done right; in which case, I would argue that I would prefer seeing matching furniture rather than something that was guessed at wrong if I walked into a new room I haven’t seen before.

Hey Arvin. Thanks for another great video. I agree with the obnoxious wine see through storage. Most people don’t need nor have the proper space for that type of display. Definitely overdone.

Very helpful. TY. Furnishing a new home currently and loving modern style. Large open wine storage should be saved for restaurants. Not even sure restaurants are designing that way anymore, unless wine is the focus.

I just bought a brand new house...like it was just finished being built a month ago, and it's very builder-grade. Ugh. The first thing I'm changing (besides the paint color)?! The wood tile!! I hate it so much!! Luckily it is a nice warm medium tones "wood" look and the grout somewhat matches so it's not insanely obvious that it's tile. But...I definitely won't be walking around barefoot for a while!! I hate cold floors!! Ugh. Why anyone would think this is a good idea is beyond me. But the house is brand new so we're gonna live w it for a while. I've got so many ideas on what I want to change and add some of my style to. Builder grade sucks!! It's like someone w no personality designed my house lol. Lots to change!! It's my first home so it's all very exciting. We should get the keys next week. ✌️
Actually love wood tiles. You can do small spaced grout or no grout, its clean and easy to take care of unlike true wood floors that move with the weather conditions (blah)and god forbid you drop water on them. I also do like the wine display under the stairs, but we love wines and have from all over the world, but in the cellar, pain in the butt to keep going downstairs to get a bottle.
Oh well! I have the gray floors and just renovated last year. Not redoing it!

I did gray LVP and i loved it at first. I didn't realize it was a trend until i got really into design. Now i want white oak but the entire second floor is finished with my gray LVP. It wasn't cheap so now im trying to work with it and warm it up so its not the star of the show. White walls help ☺️
I also did it LVP because i had two pit bulls and i wanted them to rome wherever they wanted without the fear of them scratching the floor or tearing it up from walking. They both passed since and now i just have my cat😺

I bought my house and it has wine holders underneath the cabinets and I despise them 🤣 I dont drink so wine isnt my things. When I have ppl over they bring their own wine if they want to lol

I like the wood tiles. Not a fan of grey but I have some light brown tiles in my sun porch. There was carpet 🥴in there before so the tiles are a huge improvement. I plan on putting, some in my basement as well which also has carpet.🥴
I am currently replacing the wood tiles that the previous owner just installed in 2019 with bamboo wood floor. I felt bad because I know they spent a pretty penny, BUT I just couldn't take it. Arvin is right. They are cold, the grout is hideous, and they are so hard that my back and legs hurt so bad all the time. So I agree, out with the wood tiles! Bravo Arvin!

I disagree with the wood tile! When we did our kitchen, hardwood wasn't feasible as we have dogs, easily scratch, they fade, I wanted luxury vinyl hubby didn't so we agreed upon the wood look tile in a warm almost Scandinavian feel, it's light and we are doing the same tile in our hallway main floor from the entrance in the kitchen to our livingroom (our mainfloor space is a small size) but given the durability of tile, it was the perfect choice and I love it! My biggest concern is mixing textures! And different types of wood. I don't feel I am good at it! I love and adore sectionals! Big ones where two people can stretch! Those work well in our small living space! Love your ideas! 😊 and insight!

I totally hear you, and I don't love wood tile. However, we really struggled with flooring options for our basement. We needed something that could hold up to flooding, just in case, because we're below the water table. As well as something that would work for in-floor heating, but wouldn't make our basement look like a kitchen. I think a lot of people have that issue. Would love any suggestions?

@@ArvinOlano Absolutely yes!! The key to getting a realistic look is to choose a tile in a size close to timber planks and in a high end brand where the image is not repeated so often. This way you get a high degree of variation between tiles where the image is only repeated every 15th tile as opposed to a cheaper tile where the image is repeated much more often. Higher end tiles will also use a more sophisticated imaging system making the tiles look more real. Also make sure that the tiles are laid with minimal gap lines and grouted in a matching colour which will make the result look seamless. Mine are a Brazilian walnut and look amazing. Most people are surprised to hear that they are tile!!
I have wondered about those wood look tiles. I think that the Laundry rooms positioned near kitchens or the entryways from garages into homes just work for busy families with kids. I guess I would lean toward classic/traditional furniture placement. I think that one has to bring into ones home what makes their heart sing. Hope your renovations go as planned.

Thanks Alvin for the great ideas. I don’t like wooden floors either. I can’t stand the cheap wire shelves in closets and pantries. I was watching beautiful homes with decor items on TH-cam. Some of the homes was in the price range of $400.000 and up! When the closets doors was opened and I saw the cheap wire rack shelves. I was like, they gotta go! Love watching your videos.
Seems everyone is onboard with wood tiles! I also love them, they are great for if you have pets. But I agree with colour choice, I hate grey flooring general.
Arvin I agree with everything you said! I'm also intrigued by having the laundry room in the garage...but what if you don't have a garage? Where do you envision placement of a washer and dryer in a home?
You got me on the wood tiles. I have it in my hallway only. But yes, ugh I hate the grid lines , and when the grids get dirty , I want to scream !

I think the wood tiles look great in a basement or laundry room. Using it in bedrooms, living room or any room that deserves real hardwood is where people go wrong. Way better than carpet in a basement. Love You Arvin!

re: 5:38 I agree with you. I'm not an avid drinker either, but if I were to host a party I would like to surprise my guests. Having a wine shelf somewhere in the corner behind a window or door is tasteful. Having it all out on display like a museum seems tacky.😂
I LOVE this series and look forward to it every year! I agree about the wine storage: mostly because I drink it too quickly for there to be enough to fill that kind of space, but also because I love the look of a bar. I found a gorgeous antique washstand that I use as my bar and it’s got a stunning antique gilded gold mirror above it. It’s one of my favorite finds in the last year and perfect for the size of my space. 😊 I also agree about not being afraid to go for a more eclectic/ curated look in your home. I’ve been slowly adding vintage/ antique pieces and my favorite is the antique waterfall buffet I use as a tv stand. I refinished it myself and it’s so rewarding to see it standing proudly in my living room.

I like the wine displays because I personally like buying wine on vacation and the wines tell a story of their region and I like sharing the stories when I get home. Its literally art!
Our remodeled city row home has a second floor laundry room in between all of the bedrooms and I must say it's glorious to have the noise away from the main living space and not having to go down into a dark basement whereas I have a window and natural daylight and it's actually a pleasant space to watch a TV show and fold laundry
The open wine storage is to show off a collection. If I had multiple hard to come by and vintage bottles of wine I’d show them off in some way. Maybe not what you showed in this video but a room I could show them off.
For me, wine is for drinking only so no need for elaborate storage as a design element in my home. 😊 The beverage cooler we have in our kitchen is sufficient!
