Getting to Know Oscar // Bonding with my Skittish Roborovski Hamster

  • Hi Hamster Friends!
    Finally! Another video!
Today's video is all about my rescue Roborovski hamster, Oscar. I got him from the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter in LA County in December of 2021.
LA County Animal Shelter, Baldwin Park: animalcare.lac...
Oscar is a skiddish little guy but is also SUCH a sweetie (he has yet to EVER bite!)
Working with scared or skiddish hamsters can be difficult, and I've seen a lot of questions about how to deal with them (or just bond with Roborovski hamsters, generally). I wanted to make this video to talk about how I worked with Oscar to get him to come out of his shell a bit.
I also wanted a video just for him, to raise awareness, as always, of hamsters in shelters & rescues and why you should think adoption first!
I hope this video is helpful and/or entertaining. Please leave me your comments or questions below!
Thanks for joining me on my hamster care journey!

I agree robos are little fairies! My two robos don’t like being handled but I’ve learned to be patient. It’s so worth it knowing there is some trust they have for me to put them in the playpen 🥰😍I loved learning more about Oscar thank you for sharing his story ❤

I definitely understand I have a lil peanut like him and he even scared himself with grass lol but What do you expect? We're big you come around the corners 🐹 but mine acknowledges me and I love it... And then he runs into his little hole lol

Lovely oscar 🥰 my robo Burrito is also really skittish, but after some weeks he started to come for mealworms and asks for them running around a sand plate where I put his treats when I'm close to the enclosure. The joy is even bigger if you gain the trust of such skittish hammies :)

Burrito!! 🌯 omg I love that name! 💕 It’s so true… when they play hard to get it’s so much more exciting when they start to come around! 🥰

@@alcid2466 yes, I understand! I actually think I may get a dwarf from a rescue 🛟 🐹 who wants a lot of attention. I love Oscar but sometimes I feel like I drive him nuts waiting for him to come out and adorably eat something 😂 he could probably use slightly less of my peering eyes 👀!

Thanks for posting I’ve really missed your videos. So much good advice today, mine are all old(all rescued around the same time) and they struggle to get around on the items they’ve always had but they hate change, I’ll try the pumice they should grip that, and I can keep the set up’s the same for them. Thanks. I also think they might like the grass, cat grass ? Is that cat nip ?

:D thank you!! oof yes, I hear you, adjusting for old age while still keeping them happy can be challenging, I'm finding that with Oscar too- he still has energy but just can't get around as well as before. Definitely takes some creative problem solving!
The grass is wheat grass, sometimes people call it "cat grass' bc it's typically marketed to cats. You can buy already grown at your pet store, or you can grow it at home. The only thing I'm still trying to master is how to make it last longer, I'd love to have some more long term plants in their cages... one day!

My robo is one tough nut to crack. Even though I give her treats, a big wheel and a small house to sleep in, she freaks out when she sees me trying to just gently touch her. I even think no matter what I do, she will still be scared of me. There are some days which seem hopeful and most are just the typical robo hamster attitude. Not easy to tame. Well, I shall keep trying to see if she will be friendly one day.

❤️ I know, those robos can be tricky! Oscar was definitely my most challenging robo, but I was able to make some progress with him by getting him out to a playpen regularly… even at that he remained fairly reclusive but would eventually take flax seeds from my fingertips and was able to be handled by the vet when he eventually needed care. If you can get her to a playpen, I think it will help! Or at least it helped me a lot :). Best of luck. And be patient! It can take months of gentle practice to make progress. 😊

Very nice video. With my past hamsters, I was able to put them all together fir a while,
Now I have two 6-month white boy Robos. I got them 6 weeks old from a breeder. They were happy in their cage multi-plex, until 3 weeks later, they began to fight a bit over their food and places. So, I have separated them, just by removing the connecting tube. They now have an identical cage each. Very happy, I see.
I have a question re playpen. As i could not put them in the playpen together, how will they behave after being put in after his brother and smell him? what should I, if anything, please/

Hi! Im glad to hear they are both doing well and happy now! I use one playpen for all of my hamsters. Of course they don’t go in at the same time, but they don’t each have their own playpen (if only I had that much space!)
Some of my hamsters seem to be interested in all the smells and will run around sniffing and exploring. Others seem totally unaware and like they couldn’t care less- they just want all the snacks and then find a cozy corner to nap in :)
I figure, maybe the smells are interesting to them, since they are quite scent oriented creatures. As long as I monitor their behavior and don’t leave them in the playpen for too long, or with outside threats (like other pets, kids), playpen time seems to enrich my hamsters and improve our bond.
Of course every hamster is different. If you notice your hamsters are acting stressed (zooming around, looking for a way out), maybe the smell of the other hamster is distressing and you could consider doing a separate playpen.
I, however, have never had a problem with it!
